ABSTRACT We used recent developments in theoretical population ecology to construct basic models of common loon (Gavia immer) demography and population dynamics. We parameterized these models using existing survival estimates and data from long-term monitoring of loon productivity and abundance. Our models include deterministic, 2-stage, density-independent matrix models, yielding population growth-rate estimates (λ) of 0.99 and 1.01 for intensively studied populations in our Wisconsin, USA, and New Hampshire, USA, study areas, respectively. Perturbation analysis of these models indicated that estimated growth rate is extremely sensitive to adult survival, as expected for this long-lived species. Also, we examined 20 years of count data for the 2 areas and evaluated support for a set of count-based models of population growth. We detected no temporal trend in Wisconsin, which would be consistent with fluctuation around an average equilibrium state but could also result from data limitations. For New Hampshire, the model set included varying formulations of density dependence and partitioning of stochasticity that were enabled by the annual sampling resolution. The best model for New Hampshire included density regulation of population growth and, along with the demographic analyses for both areas, provided insight into the possible importance of breeding habitat availability and the abundance of nonbreeding adults. Based on these results, we recommend that conservation organizations include nonbreeder abundance in common loon monitoring efforts and that additional emphasis be placed on identifying and managing human influences on adult loon survival.  相似文献

1. Foliar trichomes clearly reduce chewing damage and efficiency of movement by some insect herbivores, but the effect of trichomes on insect oviposition is less well characterised. Trichomes are likely to have particularly strong, negative effects on species that require secure attachment of the egg to the leaf epidermis for successful transition to the feeding stage – a group that includes many leaf mining insects. 2. One such species, Micrurapteryx salicifoliella, must initially enter leaf cells directly from an egg adhered to the cuticle, but later instars can move between leaves and initiate new mines from the leaf exterior. 3. Natural patterns of occurrence by M. salicifoliella were quantified on 10 sympatric Salix species varying in trichome expression to test whether trichomes were associated with reduced oviposition, larval survival and leaf damage. 4. Mean egg density and leaf mining damage were negatively related to mean trichome density across Salix species. Survival of M. salicifoliella from egg to pupa was positively related to trichome density, suggesting that initiation of new mines by late‐instar larvae was not adversely affected by trichomes. There was no evidence that trichomes benefited leaf miner larvae indirectly by decreasing density‐dependent mortality; rather, the positive relationship between trichome density and larval survival may reflect less effective chemical defence by Salix species expressing high trichome density. 5. The results suggest that foliar trichomes serve as an effective defence against M. salicifoliella by deterring oviposition, but do not reduce the survivorship of those individuals that successfully transition from egg to larva.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Rainbow Bay is a temporary freshwater pond in South Carolina, U.S.A., that typically fills in winter and dries in spring or summer. We studied population dynamics of zooplankton in 1984 and 1985 when it held water for 282 and 57 days, respectively. The zooplankton were diverse, including one species of calanoid copepod, nine or more cyclopoid copepods, nineteen or more cladocerans, and twelve or more rotifers. The community was initially dominated by the copepods Diaptomus stagnalis and Acanthocyclops vernalis or Diacyclops haueri, later by cyclopoids and cladocerans including Daphnia laevis and Simocephalus spp.
  • 2 Laboratory experiments with sediments from the dry pond support the inference from field data that time of emergence from resting stages was a proximate cause of the initial succession of species. The experiments also showed that eggs of the calanoid copepod, Diaptomus stagnalis, were inhibited from hatching in early November, but became ready to hatch by late November. A similar inhibition was not observed for cladocerans or cyclopoid copepods.
  • 3 Food limitation appeared to influence population dynamics following emergence. For the cladocerans Daphnia laevis and Simocephalus spp., great reductions in size-specific fecundity occurred 1 month (1985) or 3 months (1984) after the pond filled and were associated with disappearance of the rotifer Conochilus hippocrepis. The cladocerans produced ephippia when their fecundities declined. Reproduction of Diaptomus occurred before cladoceran fecundities decreased in 1984, but during their decline in 1985. Broods of Diaptomus were smaller in 1985.

The majority of tetraploid peonies are allopolyploids derived from crosses between phylogenetically distinct diploid lineages. Tetraploid Paeonia obovata was previously considered to be an autopolyploid because it is morphologically indistinguishable from the diploid of the same species. The presence of the Adh2 gene in tetraploid P. obovata but the inability to amplify the Adh2 gene from Chinese diploids of P. obovata, however, suggests that the tetraploid was not an autotetraploid derivative of the geographically adjacent diploid populations in China. The Adh gene phylogenies rather suggest that the tetraploid originated from crosses between two geographical races of diploid P. obovata distributed in China and Japan. The intermediate status of tetraploid P. obovata between auto‐ and allopolyploidy highlights the need for population genetic analyses of polyploid origins along the continuous range of genomic divergence. Here we present a model that describes the probabilities of polyploid formation and establishment as a function of genomic divergence between diploid progenitors. The probability of polyploid formation (Pf) is obtained from the multiplication of the probability of production of unreduced gametes (Pg) and the probability of ‘hybridization’ (Ph). Pf stays relatively stable when the genomic divergence is low, and then decreases progressively rapidly with the increase of genomic divergence between diploid progenitors. The probability of polyploid establishment (Pe), which depends on the rate of appearance of stable beneficial gene combinations and the rate of fertility restoration, is positively correlated with the genomic divergence of diploid parents. In 1967 a programme was initiated by the Freshwater Biological Association to study fish populations within the proposed Cow Green reservoir basin and in the Tees downstream of the dam, before and after impoundment. This paper describes the result of a supporting study on aquatic invertebrates covering the pre-impoundment period 1967–70. The benthic faunas of six streams in the reservoir basin, the Tees below Cauldron Snout and Maize Beck, a tributary ofthe Tees below the dam, were studied. Species list are presented for each habitat and changes in seasonal and annual abundance are discussed. All areas sampled lie at altitudes between 440 and 550 m O.D. and are situated amongst moorland and limestone grassland. Conditions in the streams ranged from slow-flowing peaty reaches to small streams with moss-covered bottoms and larger stony rivers and streams with relatively unstable bottoms. Samples were taken in riffles and pools using the ‘kick’ method wherever possible. An attempt was made to quantify kick-sample catches by comparing them with shovel-sample catches which cover a known area of stream bottom. It was found that 10 5 kicks gave a catch equivalent to the populations of 1 m2, giving a population density of about 1200 animals/m for the reservoir-basin riffles. Over 120 taxa were recorded, 100 of which were at the species level. In the reservoir-basin streams, 116 taxa were found with seventy-one in Maize Beck and fifty-six in the Tees below Cauldron Snout. Ephemeroptera were the most abundant group in the reservoir basin and Maize Beck faunas with Rhithrogena semicohrata, Heptagenia lateralis and Baetidae being the most abundant forms, although Ecdyonurus spp. especially E. dispar were much more common in Maize Beck. In other groups Leuctra spp. and Gammarus pulex were very common. In the Tees below Cauldron Snout Limnaea peregra, Chironomidae and Baetidae formed the bulk of the fauna and Plecoptera were uncommon. Amongst the reservoir basin streams Weelhead Sike supported the largest number of species and species groups (eighty-one), and all the streams had forty-nine or more taxa represented. Information on seasonal changes in the numbers of those species or species groups composing 90% or more of the total fauna is presented. Faunal density was high in May with Ephemeroptera, particularly Ecdyonuridae, and the plecopteran Leuctra inermis being the most abundant forms. In August, the numbers of animals appeared t o fall and common members of the community were Baetidae, Diptera, Leuctra fusca and Ecdyonuridae. In October, Ecdyonuridae particularly R. semicolorata, were most abundant. A comparison ofthe bottom fauna of riffles and pools was made and more animals were found in riffles than in pools. The effect of gravel extraction on the bottom fauna of the Tees was examined. A severe drop in the numbers of animals was observed after extraction. Diptera were the first group to return to their pre-disturbance density. Elminthidae and Annelida were worst affected and slowest to recover. The fauna of the area is discussed and possible reasons for its relative species richness are put forward. Habitat diversity and chemical richness appear to be the most likely reasons for the relatively large number of species found.  相似文献

WE have found that patients with various types of solid tumours and leukaemias have considerably increased concentrations of the polyamines such as putrescine (diaminobutane), spermidine and spermine in their urine. Polyamines are small cationic substances, which occur ubiquitously in nature1. Because enhanced polyamine synthesis and accumulation are characteristic of rapid growth systems2–6 it seemed possible that they might serve as indicators of rapidly proliferating tumours.  相似文献

The response of leaf tissue to white, blue, red, and far-redlight has been examined. Leaves on plants grown in darknessshow increased cell number, cell volume, and area when exposedto long periods (up to 48 h) of low-intensity red, blue, orfar-red radiation. This is believed to be a photomorphogenicresponse which does not involve photosynthesis. Leaves fromplants exposed to white light during germination do not usuallyrespond to red, blue, or far-red light. An exception to thiswas found for leaf discs which showed a larger increase in areathan the dark controls following exposure to far-red light for24 h. Leaf tissue from light-grown plants responds to high-intensitywhite light, probably through photosynthesis. Discs cut fromdark-grown plants and cultured in white light grow equally wellin air and CO2-free conditions. Application of the photosyntheticinhibitor DCMU reduces growth and chlorophyll formation, however. It is concluded that light, perhaps acting through the phytochromemechanism, has initially a number of morphogenic effects includinginitiation of development of the photosynthetic apparatus. Theresponses to photomorphogenically active radiation do not persistand light effects through photosynthesis are rapidly initiatedand dominate the later stages of leaf growth.  相似文献
