1. To explore the possible causes of apparent changes in reproductive mode from obligate to cyclical parthenogenesis over time in recombinant clones of the aphid Sitobion avenae Fabricius, all F1 progenies from various crosses were tested for several consecutive years for sexual morph production, after several weeks' exposure to a short photoperiod. 2. Variable proportions of the F1 progenies from selfing and outcrossing holocyclic clones did not produce mating females when induction was attempted in the year of hatching, but only after further induction, the following year or after. This ‘delayed setting of the photoperiodic response’ (DSPR) was much stronger in recombinants from crosses involving only clones from oceanic regions than in those involving one clone from a region with a continental climate. 3. F1 progenies resulting from crosses between one holocyclic and one intermediate clone did not show DSPR. It appeared again in the F2. 4. DSPR preferentially affected the latest hatched clones in a given progeny. 5. This phenomenon is neither an experimental artefact nor as a result of clone contamination. It appears to be because of a genetically controlled quantitative trait affecting the length of the ‘interval timer’, and may represent an adaptation of holocyclic aphid clones from oceanic regions to unpredictable winter climates.  相似文献

Many methods, based on morphological, molecular or chemical characters, have been used to address the question of species taxonomic status. Integrative taxonomy aims to define stronger supported taxonomic hypotheses by considering complementary datasets from different characters. By following an integrative approach, the present study includes molecular, chemical and morphological criteria to establish the taxonomic status of two rare and doubtful cuckoo bumblebee taxa: Bombus (Psithyrus) barbutellus and Bombus (Psithyrus) maxillosus. These two sympatric taxa are discriminated by few morphological criteria (mainly wing darkness and hair length). We used these morphological character diagnoses to establish an a priori status of our samples (23 specimens). We developed a combined molecular dataset from one nuclear gene, elongation factor 1α (EF‐1α), and one mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), spanning 1623 bp, and a chemical dataset of sexual marking pheromones (73 compounds). The molecular data were subjected to maximum‐likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic inference under partitioned model and maximum parsimony. The chemical data were analysed by clustering and the two‐group k‐means method to test divergences between the two species. The resulting phylogenetic trees show no consistent divergence between the two taxa. Moreover, we found no divergence in the sexual marking pheromones in the clustering and two‐group k‐means analyses. These converging results support the conspecificity of both taxa. Nonetheless, our determinations using the traditional morphological criteria separated our samples into two taxa. We conclude that the morphological criteria seem to relate to intraspecific variations: B. maxillosus is regarded as a syn.n. of B. barbutellus.  相似文献

Highly polymorphic genetic markers provide a useful tool for estimating genetic parameters in studies of the evolution of sociality in insects. We isolated and characterized 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci in the invasive ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, and described experimental conditions for PCR (polymerase chain reaction) multiplexing and simultaneously genotyping these loci in two sets of five and seven markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 14 and the observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.233 to 0.967. Moreover, results of cross‐species amplification tests are reported in three other species of Wasmannia and in two species of the genus Allomerus.  相似文献

The morphological features of the cuticles of the leaves, nectaries and stamen filaments of eleven newly published species of Eucalyptus from Central Australia are described and illustrated. The species form four groupS. Within each group, the gross morphology of the species is sufficiently uniform to present difficulty in identification of specimenS. However, the species differ from each other in both qualitative and quantitative cuticular features. The quantitative features include stomatal size and the frequency spectra of subsidiary cells. The abaxial and adaxial frequency spectra of a given species are usually different from each other, but the spectra of different specimens of the same species are closely similar and differ from those of other species of the same group. The general features of the nectary are described. The species differ in nectary pore size, whether the pores are complanate or sunk, etc. Other microscopic features of the nectary cuticles are also species-specific. Different species are shown to have different patterns of the cuticular ornamentation of the stamen filaments.
The importance of cuticular features in identification and definitions of the term 'subsidiary cell' are discussed. Cuticular ornamentation differs in leaves, nectaries and stamen filaments, yet the nature of the cuticle remains the same. Species with relatively large stomata may have small nectary pores, and vice versa. The genetic control of the cuticular features is different in and independent for each tissue, in the leaf even for the abaxial and adaxial surfaces. The adaptive value of cuticular features, especially of the leaves, and the radiative evolution of the Central Australian bloodwoods are discussed.  相似文献

We reconsider the taxonomy of a group of closely related Ostrinia spp., illustrating how useful Mayr's biological species concept remains for studying speciation patterns and processes. We review and re-analyse recent data on Ostrinia scapulalis , Ostrinia nubilalis , Ostrinia narynensis and Ostrinia orientalis , along with those obtained over > 45 years in the former Soviet Union. The ten species of the 'trilobed uncus' group in the Ostrinia genus are classified into subgroups according to male mid-tibia morphology. However, none of the characters that further discriminate between them (female sex pheromones, male genitalia and calling time) varies together with male mid-tibia morphology, and neither do molecular markers. Moreover, male mid-tibia morphology appears to depend on only two diallelic loci and seems to be unrelated to reproductive isolation between Ostrinia taxa. By contrast, reproductive isolation is strongly related to host-plant type. In accordance with Mayr's species concept, we thus propose a revision of the trilobed uncus Ostrinia spp. based primarily on host-plant type. We propose that O. narynensis Mutuura & Munroe, 1970 ( syn. nov. ) and O. orientalis Mutuura & Munroe, 1970 ( syn. nov. ) be synonymized with O. scapulalis (Walker, 1859). We further demonstrate that O. nubilalis auctt. pro parte feeding on mugwort, hop, and several other dicotyledons (previously called the ' O. nubilalis mugwort-race' in France) also belongs to O. scapulalis . Consequently, we propose that only O. nubilalis specimens feeding on maize (the former French ' O. nubilalis maize-race') belong to O. nubilalis (Hübner, 1796). ABSTRACT. Three complete 18S ribosomal RNA gene sequences from the rumen ciliates, Entodinium coudatum (1,639 bp), Epidinium caudarum (1,638 bp), and Polyplastron multivesiculatum (1,640 bp) were determined and confrimed in the opposite direction. Trees produced using maximum parsimony and distance-matrix methods (lest squares and neighbour-joining). with strong bootstrap support, depict the rumen ciliates as a monophyletic group, Entodinium caudatum is the earliest branching rumen ciliate. However, Entodiniwn simplex does not pair with En. caudatum , but rather with Polyplastron multivesiculatum. Signature sequences for these rumen ciliates reveal that the published SSrRNA gene sequence from En. simplex is in fact a Polyoplastron species. The free-living haptorian ciliates, Loxophyllum, Homalozoon and Spathidium (Subclass Hoptoria), are monophyletic and are the sister group to the rumen cilates. The litostomes (class Litostomatea), consisting of the haptorians and the rumen ciliates, are also a monophyletic group.  相似文献

Predicted changes in the global climate are likely to cause large shifts in the geographic ranges of many plant and animal species. To date, predictions of future range shifts have relied on a variety of modeling approaches with different levels of model accuracy. Using a common data set, we investigated the potential implications of alternative modeling approaches for conclusions about future range shifts and extinctions. Our common data set entailed the current ranges of 100 randomly selected mammal species found in the western hemisphere. Using these range maps, we compared six methods for modeling predicted future ranges. Predicted future distributions differed markedly across the alternative modeling approaches, which in turn resulted in estimates of extinction rates that ranged between 0% and 7%, depending on which model was used. Random forest predictors, a model‐averaging approach, consistently outperformed the other techniques (correctly predicting >99% of current absences and 86% of current presences). We conclude that the types of models used in a study can have dramatic effects on predicted range shifts and extinction rates; and that model‐averaging approaches appear to have the greatest potential for predicting range shifts in the face of climate change.  相似文献

Primer sequence and polymorphism data are presented for 13 microsatellite loci isolated from the European corn borer moth, Ostrinia nubilalis, as part of a project to construct a linkage map for the two pheromone strains. Experimental conditions are described for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) multiplexing, which allows genotyping in two electrophoresis runs of eight and five markers each. In a sample of 27 individuals coming from one European locality, the number of alleles per locus ranged from one to 12, and gene diversity from 0 to 0.859. Seven loci showed a deficit of heterozygotes. Eleven loci cross‐amplify in the related Ostrinia furnacalis.  相似文献
