Polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified in order to study golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) population fragmentation. Twenty‐six published Aquila and eight published Haliaeetus microsatellite loci were tested for polymorphism in A. chrysaetos. Fifteen loci were polymorphic with between two and six alleles detected per locus. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.15 to 0.77 among 177 unrelated individuals from Scotland. There was no evidence for null alleles. Two pairs of loci (Hal‐10 & Aa15 and Hal‐10 & Aa26) displayed linkage disequilibrium.  相似文献

The pattern of fine-scale genetic structure in a population may reflect current biological processes of the species, such as natal dispersal, the breeding system and demography. We investigated the spatial distribution of nests and fine-scale genetic structure during two breeding seasons in a population of a weakly territorial, flock-living passerine bird, the vinous-throated parrotbill, Paradoxornis webbianus . Nest distribution was clustered. There were two peaks of egg laying within each breeding season, and spatial clustering of nests was more extreme during the second peak after controlling for breeding density. The patterns of genetic structure during the breeding season varied with parental sex and season. Genetic structure occurred during the second laying peak: males breeding within 200 m of one another at this time were significantly more closely related than males breeding farther apart. However, no apparent genetic structure was detected in males during the first laying peak or among females in either laying peak. These results reveal male-oriented kin affiliation during part of the breeding season in this species. Furthermore, juvenile recruitment into the winter flocks was positively related to this increased relatedness among males via kin affiliation. This study implies that fine-scale genetic structure during the breeding season could be a factor determining individual fitness and may play an important role in our understanding of the evolution of social systems.  相似文献

1. Surface water is an important dispersal vector for wetland plant species. However, most previous studies on hydrochory (i.e. water dispersal) have focused on ecosystems with relatively rapid water flow. Therefore, there is a need to study such dispersal in slow‐flowing or stagnant waterbodies, such as drainage ditches, which might act as dispersal corridors between habitat patches. 2. To gain insight into the mechanisms by which seeds are transported in drainage ditches, the effect of the velocity of wind and water on the rate of transport of floating seeds of three wetland species (Carex pseudocyperus L., Iris pseudacorus L. and Sparganium erectum L.) was investigated. Furthermore, in release and retrace experiments with painted C. pseudocyperus seeds, a number of factors potentially determining the probability of seed deposition were investigated. 3. Net wind speed was found to be the main factor determining the rate at which seeds are transported in drainage ditches. No relation between water flow at middepth in the ditches and seed transport was found. Wind speed and flow at the water surface were positively related. The effect of wind speed on the rate of transport of floating seeds was greater for S. erectum seeds, because a greater ratio of their volume protrudes from the water, than for C. pseudocyperus and I. pseudacorus seeds. 4. The principal factors that determine seed deposition were aquatic plant cover, ditch slope and indentations in the ditch bank. Seeds changed direction if the wind direction changed, or if there was a bend in the ditch. The final pattern of deposition was related to mean net wind speed. Mean transport distance after 2 days varied between 34 and 451 m. 5. Unlike in rivers, seed transport in ditches was determined by wind speed and direction, enabling multidirectional seed dispersal. We conclude that in slow‐flowing waters, wind is a more important driver for hydrochorous seed transport than the flow of water. This sheds a new light on hydrochory and has important consequences for the management of otherwise fragmented wetland remnants.  相似文献

Stickleback fishes are renowned for the complexity of their nuptial colour signal. In this paper I show that the nuptial signal is in fact multimodal: male-based olfactory cues also transmit information to receptive females. Both female three-spined and brook sticklebacks recognized the scent from each other's males, but discriminated in favour of their own males when asked to choose between conspecific and heterospecific odours. Although females were not attracted to scent from the more distantly related guppy, Poecilia reticulata , changes in their baseline behaviours indicated that they perceived its presence. Olfactory cues act as long distance messages, allowing a female to detect the 'I am here' message from the male before she can actually see him. Studies of interactions between temporally displaced signals indicate that the first cue (in this case chemical) functions to alert the receiver to the presence of the second cue (visual), increasing the probability of its detection and recognition. So, although olfactory cues do not appear to be as species-specific as visual cues, their function as alerting stimuli may not require such fine-tuning. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 555–572.  相似文献

We isolated 18 polymorphic microsatellite loci to be used for pedigree analysis in a wild population of North American red squirrels, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus. Allelic diversity and observed heterozygosity ranged from six to 13 and 0.39 to 0.89, respectively, in a sample of 93 individuals. Up to 13 sets of primers also amplify in other rodent species.  相似文献

We isolated 17 microsatellite loci in the whiskered auklet (Aethia pygmaea) and tested them for amplification in 48 species from 13 seabird families (including 42 seabirds). Fifteen of these loci were also tested for polymorphism in 38 of the species, which included nine species of Alcinae (four auklets, Atlantic puffin, dovekie, razorbill and two murre species). On the average, nine loci were polymorphic per Alcinae species.  相似文献

In this "In Focus" introduction, we present the ways in which discourses of techne (craft or artisanship) and technoscience mediate the production, consumption, and circulation of food and drink. The authors in this "In Focus" examine food and drink as localized instances of large-scale spatial and temporal processes and as cultural-material markers of power/knowledge. Our work on the current controversies surrounding foie gras exemplifies how specialty commodities marketed as "artisanal" are simultaneously legitimated through technoscientific practices and invocations of tradition or nature. The viscin of mistletoes is a unique tissue which serves toprovide strong adherence of the seed of the parasite to thehost branch. The viscin mucilage of three species, Phoradendroncalifornicum and Arceuthobium americanum (Viscaceae) and Phthirusapyrifolia (Loranthaceae), was analysed. The major componentof the mucilage of Pho. californicum and A. americanum was polysaccharidic;of this, neutral sugars comprised the largest portion, but substantialamounts of uronic acids and proteins were also present. Xyloseand arabinose were the most abundant of the neutral sugars,and analysis showed glycine to be the most abundant amino acidas well as the presence of higher-than-average amounts of histidine.In contrast, in the mucilage of Pht. pyrifolia glucose was themost abundant neutral sugar and the protein content was substantiallyhigher. Based on the differences in composition observed amongthe different species the future use of viscin components astaxonomic markers is suggested.
