bel-2 protein in breast cancer cells obtained by fine needle aspiration (FNA): a preliminary report

The bcl-2 protein plays a role in the regulation of programmed cell death (PCD), overriding apoptosis. Its expression has been reported in breast ductal cells, where it is believed to be involved in the hormonal regulation of hyperplasia and involution. to date, bcl-2 gene product has not been investigated on breast cancer FNA. the expression of bcl-2 protein was evaluated using an immunoalkaline phosphatase technique in 54 pre-operative breast cancer aspirates and in paraffin-embedded sections from 20 matched surgical specimens. A high rate of bcl-2 protein expression was found on FNA samples (65%) and on the corresponding tissue sections (60%); there was a nearly absolute concordance in the two specimens, with 19/20 (95%) cases showing a concordant staining. These findings concur with the view that bcl-2 gene is frequently expressed in breast cancer, possibly through a hormonal-dependent pathway.     

Soft rot Erwinia bacteria in surface and underground waters in southern Scotland and in Colorado, United States

An anaerobic liquid enrichment method followed by plating on a selective medium revealed that the soft rot coliform bacterium Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora was generally present in water from drains, ditches, streams, rivers and lakes (including reservoirs) in southern Scotland and in Colorado, United States, in mountainous, upland and arable areas through the year. Many sites were remote from susceptible or diseased crops. Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica was isolated much less frequently and no Erwinia bacteria were isolated from underground waters. Erwinia bacteria were also found in rain-water in Scotland, in winter snow from mountain passes in Colorado, and in sea water from the west and east coasts of Scotland and from the coasts of Oregon, California, Texas, Louisiana and Florida. The significance of the occurrence of these bacteria in water is discussed in relation to the control of blackleg and soft rot diseases of potato by production of Erwinia -free stocks.     

Entamoeba histolytica: Collagenolytic Activity and Virulence1

Several axenic strains of pathogenic and nonpathogenic Entamoeba histolytica were tested for their capacity to digest native radioactive type I collagen gels and to produce liver abscesses when injected into the liver of newborn hamsters. The results demonstrate that the pathogenic strains of amebas (HM1:IMSS, HM3:IMSS, HM38:IMSS, and HK9) have a collagenolytic activity that closely correlates with their in vivo capacity to produce liver lesions. The nonpathogenic isolate (Laredo) did not show collagenolytic activity and failed to produce lesions in the liver of newborn hamsters. The results also demonstrate that type I collagen obtained from rodents and cats is degraded less by amebic collagenase than is bovine collagen, which is similar to human collagen. These findings suggest that species susceptibility to invasive infection may depend, among other factors, on the characteristics of the extracellular components of host tissues.     

Isoforms of an endogenous lectin in rabbit bone marrow

A lectin which may mediate inter-erythroblast associations during red blood cell development in rabbit bone marrow has previously been purified and characterised. We have now detected different forms of this lectin in purified preparations and crude tissue extracts, by isoelectric focusing in agarose gels followed by rocket immunoelectrophoresis and by indirect antibody staining of focused proteins blotted onto nitrocellulose paper. These minor antigens are probably isoforms of the bone marrow lectin previously characterised.     

Relevance of duration of transient ischaemic attacks in carotid territory.

A retrospective review of the clinical and angiographic features of 116 patients who had had one or more transient ischaemic attacks in the carotid territory showed that stenosis of ther cervical portion of the internal carotid artery was significantly more prevalent among patients whose attacks had been brief, with full recovery in under one hour. This information may be helpful in selecting patients for angiography.     

Coliforms from hides and meat.

Coliform tests were performed on 85 hide and 75 meat samples. IMViC reactions were determined on isolates from positive confirmed and fecal tests, and strains other than Escherichia coli were identified. Strains typed as Aerobacter aerogenes types I and II were identified as Enterobacter cloacae (51.4%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (21.5%), Enterobacter aerogenes (15%), and Enterobacter liquefaciens, Serratia, and unidentified coliforms (12.1%). K. pneumoniae appeared to be responsible for less than 1% positive fecal tests.
