Caste fate conflict is expected in Melipona bees because queens and workers are the same size and are reared in identical sealed cells. Extrinsic and intrinsic colonial factors, however, seem to have limiting effects on queen production. The consequences of colonial conditions on both queen and worker production, particularly the effects of food storage in the colonies, are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether caste production in seven natural colonies of Melipona compressipes fasciculata was affected by food resources, seasonal factors, or internal factors. The results showed that, at the populational level, about 5% of the females developed into gynes; in the strongest colony, 12.7% of the females developed into gynes. Male production was verified only in stronger colonies. We suggest that caste ratio is primarily affected by intra-colonial conditions rather than by food resources. Objective: This in vivo study evaluated the effect of a constant electromagnetic field (CEF) on bone healing around dental implants in dogs. Materials and methods: Eight dental implants were placed immediately after extraction of the first pre‐molar and molar teeth on the mandible of two male dogs and divided into experimental (CEF) and control groups. A CEF at magnetic intensity of 0.8 mT with a pulse width of 25 μs and frequency of 1.5 MHz was applied on the implants for 20 min per day for 2 weeks. Result and conclusion: After qualitative histological analysis, a small quantity of newly formed bone was observed in the gap between the implant surface and alveolar bone in both groups.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of silicon (Si) on resistance of bean plants (cv. ‘Peróla’) to anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, grown in a nutrient solution containing 0 (?Si) or 2 mmol Si L?1 (+Si). The concentration of Si in leaf tissue and the incubation period increased by 55.2% and 14.3%, respectively, in +Si plants in relation to ?Si plants. The area under anthracnose progress curve and the severity estimated by the software QUANT significantly decreased by 32.9% and 27%, respectively, for +Si plants. Si did not affect the concentration of total soluble phenolics. Chitinases activity was higher in the advanced stages of infection by C. lindemuthianum for leaves of ?Si plants. β‐1,3‐Glucanase activity increased after C. lindemuthianum infection, but it was not enhanced by Si. Peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities had no apparent effect on the resistance of bean plants to anthracnose, regardless of the presence of Si. The increase in lignin concentration as well as on the phenylalanine ammonia‐lyase and lipoxygenase activities were important for the resistance of +Si plants against anthracnose. The results of this study suggest that Si may increase resistance to anthracnose in bean plants by enhancing certain biochemical mechanisms of defence as opposed to just acting as a physical barrier to penetration by C. lindemuthianum.  相似文献

Two novel dinuclear complexes involving the antihypertensive drug valsartan and copper(II) ion have been prepared in water and DMSO. The complex compositions were determined as: [Cu(vals)(H2O)3]2.6H2O and [Cu(vals)(H2O)2DMSO]2.2H2O. They were thoroughly characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, spectrophotometric titrations and UV-visible, diffuse reflectance, FTIR, Raman and EPR spectroscopies. No effect of the ligand on two tested osteoblastic cell lines in culture (one normal MC3T3E1 and one tumoral UMR106) was observed in concentrations up to 100 μM. Higher concentrations of Valsartan are required to induce cytotoxicity in both cell lines. The antiproliferative effect of the tested complex ([Cu(vals)(H2O)3]2.6H2O) in a dose-response manner, was higher in the UMR106 osteoblastic cell line than that of the MC3T3E1 normal line at concentrations ≥ 100 μM. Morphological alterations are in accordance with proliferative observations.  相似文献

In Brazil capybara, the biggest existing rodent species, and associated tick species, Amblyomma cajennense and Amblyomma dubitatum, are undergoing an unplanned host and parasite population expansion in both urban and rural areas. However, scientific information about such issue, particularly in urban areas, is scanty. Such rodent and ticks are associated in some municipalities, particularly in southeastern Brazil, with the transmission of the highly lethal Rickettsia rickettsia caused spotted-fever. In this study ecological aspects related to the establishment and expansion of capybaras and ticks in urban areas of Uberlandia, Minas Gerais State, Brazil were evaluated. For this purpose, capybara and tick abundance in four urban areas and an ecological reserve was determined. Abundance of capybaras varied between areas and over the sampling period and these differences were related to human activities. A positive correlation was found between capybara and tick abundance, however, the tick species had an uneven distribution within the municipality and environmental factors rather than host availability were blamed for such. On the whole these observations show that capybara populations in urban areas are associated to high environmental infestation of ticks and the increased risk of bites and of pathogen transmission to humans. At the same time the uneven distribution of tick species might implicate in an unequal risk of tick-borne diseases within the same urban area.  相似文献

The present work reports the length–weight relationships (LWR) for four ornamental fish species from the middle Negro River basin, Amazonas, Brazil. The r2 value ranged from 0.810 to 0.941 and values of b varied from 2.346 to 3.442. These results represent the first reference on LWR for all four species, based on FishBase.  相似文献

It has been observed that parturition has a significant effect on female skeletal architecture and that age alters musculoskeletal tissues and their functions. We therefore hypothesized that multiparity affects the recovery of the pubic symphysis in senescent mice at postpartum and the morphology of the interpubic tissues. The pubic symphysis of primiparous young, virgin senescent (VS) and multiparous senescent (MS) Swiss mice was examined by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, morphometric analysis and immunohistochemistry. The mouse pubic symphysis was remodeled during the first pregnancy: the cellular phenotype and morphology changed to ensure a structurally safe birth canal, followed by recovery of the interpubic articulation after birth. The morphology of the pubic symphysis in the VS group was maintained in a state similar to that observed in virgin young mice. In contrast, MS mice exhibited an interpubic ligament characterized by extended fibrocyte-like cells, an opened interpubic articulation gap, compacted and thin collagen fibrils and scarce galectin-3-positive cells. Thus, we found that the cellular and extracellular characteristics of the pubic symphysis were altered by multiparity in senescent mice. These particular tissue characteristics of the MS group might be associated with an impaired recovery process at postpartum. Thus, a better understanding of the alterations that occur in the birth canal, including the pubic symphysis, due to multiparity in reproductively aged mice may contribute to our comprehension of the biological mechanisms that modify the skeleton and pelvic ligaments and even play a role in the murine model of pelvic organ prolapse.  相似文献

The objective was to verify the relationship between equine semen cryopreservation and changes related to increased lipid peroxidation. Also, addition of autologous or homologous seminal plasma from a stallion with a good freezing response to post-thawed sperm was tested to determine whether it would confer protection. Frozen-thawed sperm were evaluated and allocated into three groups: without plasma addition, and supplemented with either homologous or autologous seminal plasma. All groups were evaluated at 0, 60 and 120 min after incubation at 37 °C. Cryopreservation did not increase plasma membrane disorders (mean ± SEM 9.48 ± 0.65 and 1.62 ± 0.23% in raw and frozen-thawed sperm, respectively). However, both membrane peroxidation and protein phosphorylation were increased (P < 0.05) compared to raw semen (1.74 and 5.20-fold, respectively). There was a correlation (r = 0.73; P < 0.05) between the increase in lipid peroxidation and tyrosine phosphorylation. Seminal plasma, regardless of origin, reduced (P > 0.05) tyrosine phosphorylation present on the surface of cryopreserved sperm; however, lipid peroxidation was not significantly reduced. In conclusion, we inferred that emergence of phosphorylated proteins on the surface of cryopreserved sperm was due to increased lipid peroxidation that occurred during the freezing/thawing process; however, reduced tyrosine phosphorylation that occurred after addition of seminal plasma was triggered by other mechanisms, apparently independent from the reduction in membrane peroxidation.  相似文献

Males, queens and workers of stingless bees show differences in external morphology, behaviour and roles within a colony. In addition, each individual has a cuticular chemical signature responsible for mutual communication that is essential for maintaining the integrity of the colony. In this paper we characterize the cuticular hydrocarbon composition of newly emerged diploid and haploid males, workers and virgin queens of Melipona quadrifasciata by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. This is the first time that the cuticular profile of diploid males in a species of stingless bee has been characterized. We found differences in the cuticular hydrocarbon composition among males, workers and virgin queens, recording both qualitative and quantitative differences among individuals of different phenotypes. However, no compound was found exclusively in diploid males. The cuticular chemical profiles of haploid and diploid males were very similar to those of workers. Moreover, the cuticular lipids of males and workers were significantly different from those of queens. Tricosane, pentacosene-2 and 7-methyl-heptacosane were the compounds responsible for this significant separation. This result correlates with the behavioural and morphological differences among these phenotypes.  相似文献
