Hormone-neurotransmitter interactions form an important link through which hormones influence a variety of behavioral processes. Typically, sexual behavior is dimorphic with males mounting receptive females. In the all-female lizard species Cnemidophorus uniparens, individuals display both male-like pseudocopulation and female-like receptivity. These respective behavioral states are correlated with high circulating concentrations of progesterone following ovulation and of estrogen preceding it. In sexual species, serotonin is involved in male-typical mounting, and, as reported here, in male-like pseudosexual behavior in this unisexual species. In the first study, C. uniparens were ovariectomized and treated systemically with exogenous androgen, a hormonal regimen that results in individuals displaying only male-like pseudosexual behavior. An increase in serotonin levels in the preoptic area coupled with the suppression of male-like pseudocopulation was observed in androgen-treated lizards injected with 5-hydroxytryptophan (the precursor of serotonin) and clorgyline (a monoamine oxidase inhibitor) compared to vehicle-treated controls. Our second experiment involved ovariectomizing lizards and either injecting them with estradiol or implanting them with either an empty (Blank) or a progesterone- or testosterone-containing Silastic capsule. Treatment with para-chlorophenylalanine (an inhibitor of tryptophan hydroxylase) facilitated male-like pseudosexual behavior depending on the circulating hormonal milieu and decreased serotonin levels in the preoptic area. Our data suggest that serotonin is inhibitory to male-like pseudosexual behavior in C. uniparens but more importantly that the hormonal environment modulates the serotonin system at the level of the preoptic area, with the serotonergic system then establishing behavioral thresholds that allow for this behavior to be "gated".  相似文献

Symplocos minima, a new species of Symplocos section Hopea from the Itatiaia Plateau in the Atlantic Rain Forest biome of southeastern Brazil, is described and illustrated. This species is distinguished by its densely compact shrubby habit, ascending leaves, fasciculate inflorescences with several persistent bracts, corolla with five to six erect lobes, pistillate flowers with the disc not thickened along the margin, fruiting calyx lobes obscuring the disc, and seeds sub-orbicular in cross section. The new species is morphologically related to S. itatiaiae and S. pentandra, but can be differenciated from them mainly due to the tree habit and fruiting calyx lobes not obscuring the disc in S. itatiaiae and the pistillate flowers with a disc that is thickened along the margin in S. pentandra.  相似文献

Protein JY-1 is a bovine oocyte-specific protein that regulates granulosa cell function and is involved in early embryonic development, influencing the chance of pregnancy. This study investigated molecular markers for the JY-1 gene. Seven SNPs were identified in exon 3 of the gene. The positions of the SNPs in the exon and the respective substitutions are: 163 (T/C), 281 (T/C), 321 (T/C), 532 (T/C), 652 (A/G), 679 (T/C), and 722 (G/C) (GenBank: JN592587 and JF262042.2). SNP 163 is located in a coding region and causes a proline-to-leucine substitution. The other SNPs are located in the 3′UTR region. SNPs 163, 281, 321, and 679 were genotyped in 297 Nellore heifers and the haplotypes were constructed. The haplotypes of JY-1 were not correlated with the traits studied at 5?%.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to optimize the temperature, pH and stirring rate of the production of human soluble catechol-O-methyltransferase (hSCOMT) in a batch Escherichia coli culture process. A central composite design (CCD) was firstly employed to design the experimental assays used in the evaluation of these operational parameters on the hSCOMT activity for a semi-defined and complex medium. Predictive artificial neural network (ANN) models of the hSCOMT activity as function of the combined effects of these variables was proposed based on this exploratory experiments performed for the two culture media. The regression coefficients (R(2)) for the final models were 0.980 and 0.983 for the semi-defined and complex medium, respectively. The ANN models predicted a maximum hSCOMT activity of 183.73 nmol/h, at 40 °C, pH 6.5 and stirring rate of 351 rpm, and 132.90 nmol/h, at 35 °C, pH 6.2 and stirring rate of 351 rpm, for semi-defined and complex medium, respectively. These results represent a 4-fold increase in total hSCOMT activity by comparison to the standard operational conditions used for this bioprocess at slight scale.  相似文献

The present work reports the length–weight relationships (LWR) for four ornamental fish species from the middle Negro River basin, Amazonas, Brazil. The r2 value ranged from 0.810 to 0.941 and values of b varied from 2.346 to 3.442. These results represent the first reference on LWR for all four species, based on FishBase.  相似文献

We report on the genome sequences of Lactobacillus vini type strain LMG 23202(T) (DSM 20605) (isolated from fermenting grape musts in Spain) and the industrial strain L. vini JP7.8.9 (isolated from a bioethanol plant in northeast Brazil). All contigs were assembled using gsAssembler, and genes were predicted and annotated using Rapid Annotation using Subsystem Technology (RAST). The identified genome sequence of LMG 23202(T) had 2.201.333 bp, 37.6% G+C, and 1,833 genes, whereas the identified genome sequence of JP7.8.9 had 2.301.037 bp, 37.8% G+C, and 1,739 genes. The gene repertoire of the species L. vini offers promising opportunities for biotechnological applications.  相似文献

We have previously demonstrated antileishmanial activity on Leishmania amazonensis of the natural (1-2), synthetic (7) and derivatives of coumarin (-) mammea A/BB (3-6) isolated from the dichloromethane extract of Calophyllum brasiliense leaves. The aim of the present study was to evaluate morphological and ultrastructural alterations in Leishmania amazonensis induced by these compounds. In promastigote forms, all seven compounds produced significant morphological and ultrastructural alterations, as revealed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The compound 5,7-dihydroxy-8-(2-methylbutanoyl)-6-(3-methylbutyl)-4-phenyl-chroman-2-one (3), the most active antileishmanial with LD?? of 0.9 μM), induced cell shrinkage and a rounded appearance of the cells. Parasites incubated in the presence of compound (3) showed ultrastructural changes, such as the appearance of mitochondrial swelling with a reduction in the density of the mitochondrial matrix and the presence of vesicles inside the mitochondrion, indicating damage and significant change in this organelle; abnormal chromatin condensation, alterations in the nuclear envelope, intense atypical cytoplasmic vacuolization, and the appearance of autophagic vacuoles were also observed. In addition, the compound (3) may be acting to depolarize the mitochondrial membrane potential of the cells, leading to death of the parasite.  相似文献

It is believed that the exposure of organisms to harsh climate conditions may select for differential enzymatic activities, making the surviving organisms a very promising source for bioprospecting. Soil bacteria play an important role in degradation of organic matter, which is mostly due to their ability to decompose cellulose-based materials. This work focuses on the isolation and identification of cellulolytic bacteria from soil found in two environments with stressful climate conditions (Antarctica and the Brazilian semi-arid caatinga). Cellulolytic bacteria were selected using enrichments at high and low temperatures (4 or 60°C) in liquid media (trypic soy broth—TSB and minimum salt medium—MM) supplemented with cellulose (1%). Many of the isolates (119 out of 254—46.9%) displayed the ability to degrade carboxymethyl-cellulose, indicating the presence of endoglucolytic activity, while only a minority of these isolates (23 out of 254—9.1%) showed exoglucolytic activity (degradation of avicel). The obtained isolates revealed a preferential endoglucolytic activity according to the temperature of enrichments. Also, the identification of some isolates by partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the Bacteroidetes (e.g., Pedobacter, Chryseobacterium and Flavobacterium) were the main phylum of cellulolytic bacteria isolated from soil in Antarctica; the Firmicutes (e.g., Bacillus) were more commonly isolated from samples from the caatinga; and Actinobacteria were found in both types of soil (e.g., Microbacterium and Arthrobacter). In conclusion, this work reports the isolation of bacteria able to degrade cellulose-based material from soil at very low or very high temperatures, a finding that should be further explored in the search for cellulolytic enzymes to be used in the bioenergy industry.  相似文献

Ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials is often conceived considering independent, stand-alone production plants; in the Brazilian scenario, where part of the potential feedstock (sugarcane bagasse) for second generation ethanol production is already available at conventional first generation production plants, an integrated first and second generation production process seems to be the most obvious option. In this study stand-alone second generation ethanol production from surplus sugarcane bagasse and trash is compared with conventional first generation ethanol production from sugarcane and with integrated first and second generation; simulations were developed to represent the different technological scenarios, which provided data for economic and environmental analysis. Results show that the integrated first and second generation ethanol production process from sugarcane leads to better economic results when compared with the stand-alone plant, especially when advanced hydrolysis technologies and pentoses fermentation are included.  相似文献

Osteomyelitis is an infectious disease located in the bone or bone marrow. Long-circulating and pH-sensitive liposomes containing a technetium-99m-labeled antibiotic, ceftizoxime, (SpHL-(99m)Tc-CF) were developed to identify osteomyelitis foci. Biodistribution studies and scintigraphic images of bone infection or non infection-bearing rats that had been treated with these liposomes were performed. A high accumulation in infectious foci and high values in the target-non target ratio could be observed. These results indicate the potential of SpHL-(99m)Tc-CF as a potential agent for the diagnosis of bone infections.  相似文献
