The potential benefit to be derived from seed inoculation of Phaseolus vulgaris beans with effective strains of Rhizobium phaseoli, was investigated in field experiments over three years on a site low in soil nitrogen and lacking indigenous effective strains of R. phaseoli. Inoculation with R. phaseoli (strain RCR 3644) produced significant increases in nodulation, nitrogenase activity and plant growth in all experiments. In trials in 1978 and 1979, with cv. Seafarer, inoculation, in the absence of nitrogen fertiliser doubled seed yields. In 1978, the seed yields from inoculated beans without nitrogen fertiliser (1–6 t/ha) were not significantly different from those obtained with uninoculated beans receiving the optimum nitrogen fertiliser treatment of 120 kg N/ha (1–75 t/ha). In 1979, with lower rainfall favouring more efficient utilisation of nitrogen fertiliser, inoculation gave seed yields (1–88 t/ha) equivalent to those obtained with 60 kg N/ha (1–70 t/ha) but significantly less than with 120 kg N/ha (2–88 t/ha). More precise estimates from nitrogen response curves showed that inoculation supplied the fertiliser equivalent of 105 and 70 kg N/ha in 1978 and 1979 respectively. In both years, significant benefits were also obtained by the combination of inoculation and nitrogen fertiliser. In a separate experiment in 1979, with four R. phaseoli strains inoculated onto eight bean cultivars, three were highly effective nitrogen fixers on all cultivars. Two strains (RCR 3644 and NVRS 963A) each increased mean yields, in the absence of nitrogen fertiliser, from 1–39 t/ha uninoculated to c. 2–5 t/ha inoculated whilst strain RCR 3622 was outstanding with a mean yield of 3-0 t/ha. An analysis of the nitrogen content of seed showed that gains from nitrogen fixation were 37–57 kg N/ha/growing cycle for the combination RCR 3644 with cv. Seafarer. However, 106 kg N/ha/growing cycle was recorded for the combination RCR 3622 and cv. Aurora.  相似文献

Enzyme distribution in potato mitochondria was investigatedby selectively disrupting the outer and inner membranes withdigitonin. Antimycin-insensitive NADH-cytochrome c reductase,an outer membrane marker, was released at low digitonin concentrations(0.1 mg mg–1 mitochondrial protein). Soluble matrix enzymes,fumarase and malate dehydrogenase were released at 0.3–0.4mg digitonin mg–1 protein, as the inner membrane ruptured.Very little (about 10%) cytochrome oxidase activity was released,even at higher digitonin concentrations, in accord with thisenzyme being an integral inner membrane protein. By this criterionadenylate kinase is also firmly bound to the inner membrane.Evidence indicates that it faces the intermembrane space. Malic enzyme activity was released by the same digitonin concentrationthat released fumarase and malate dehydrogenase, indicatingthat malic enzyme is a soluble matrix enzyme. No activity wasreleased at low digitonin concentrations which selectively breakthe outer membrane, showing that malic enzyme is not presentin the intermembrane space. Considerable catalase activity (20—40 µmol O2 min–1mg–1 protein) was associated with washed mitochondrialpreparations, but 95% of this was lost upon purification ofmitochondria. Type-material of 100 insect species described by J. R. Forster has always been thought lost. We present evidence that syntypic specimens of some of these species were sent by Forster to Linnaeus in 1772. Specimens of at least 27 species survive in the Linnaean collection now in Burlington House, and are listed. The identity of each of the 18 species of Hymenoptera described by Forster is examined in detail, particularly the nine represented by specimens. Lectotypes are designated for two species; four new synonymies and two new combinations are established; and three names remain nomina dubia within their genera.  相似文献

Background

Spinal cord electrical stimulation (SCS) has shown to be a treatment option for patients suffering from angina pectoris CCS III-IV although being on optimal medication and not suitable for conventional treatment strategies, e.g. CABG or PTCA. Although many studies demonstrated a clear symptomatic relief under SCS therapy, there are only a few short-term studies that investigated alterations in cardiac ischemia. Therefore doubts remain whether SCS has a direct effect on myocardial perfusion.

Methods

A prospective study to investigate the short- and long-term effect of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) on myocardial ischemia in patients with refractory angina pectoris and coronary multivessel disease was designed. Myocardial ischemia was measured by MIBI-SPECT scintigraphy 3 months and 12 months after the beginning of neurostimulation. To further examine the relation between cardiac perfusion and functional status of the patients we measured exercise capacity (bicycle ergometry and 6-minute walk test), symptoms and quality of life (Seattle Angina Questionnaire [SAQ]), as well.

Results

31 patients (65 ± 11 SEM years; 25 male, 6 female) were included into the study. The average consumption of short acting nitrates (SAN) decreased rapidly from 12 ± 1.6 times to 3 ± 1 times per week. The walking distance and the maximum workload increased from 143 ± 22 to 225 ± 24 meters and 68 ± 7 to 96 ± 12 watt after 3 months. Quality of life increased (SAQ) significantly after 3 month compared to baseline, as well. No further improvement was observed after one year of treament. Despite the symptomatic relief and the improvement in maximal workload computer based analysis (Emory Cardiac Toolbox) of the MIBI-SPECT studies after 3 months of treatment did not show significant alterations of myocardial ischemia compared to baseline (16 patients idem, 7 with increase and 6 with decrease of ischemia, 2 patients dropped out during initial test phase). Interestingly, in the long-term follow up after one year 16 patients (of 27 who completed the one year follow up) showed a clear decrease of myocardial ischemia and only one patient still had an increase of ischemia compared to baseline.

Conclusion

Thus, spinal cord stimulation not only relieves symptoms, but reduces myocardial ischemia as well. However, since improvement in symptoms and exercise capacity starts much earlier, decreased myocardial ischemia might not be a direct effect of neurostimulation but rather be due to a better coronary collateralisation because of an enhanced physical activity of the patients.  相似文献

Resistogram Method for Differentiation of Strains of Candida albicans   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
This method is based on differences in the resistance of strains of Candida albicans to a number of selected chemicals used at critical concentrations. The method was applied to isolates from patients undergoing treatment for vaginal infection and it was found that particular strains were consistently present in individual patients, both in different specimens and on different occasions. It was also found that some patients harboured more than one strain of C. albicans . Inconsistencies in the resistograms of certain isolates tested on a number of occasions were resolved when the amount of inoculum used in the test was further standardized.  相似文献
