SUMMARY: Many of 110 strains of Serratia , isolated from soil, water, milk and dairy equipment, were biochemically closely related to the coli-aerogenes bacteria. Acid and gas was formed from glucose in 14 days at 30° by 53% and from lactose and MacConkey's broth by about 40%. All except one strain gave——++ IMViC reactions.
An inverse relationship was observed between depth of pigmentation and carbohydrate fermentation. Complete loss of pigment in mutant strains was not uncommon, and was associated with loss of proteolytic properties and increase of saccharolytic activity.
The majority of the strains had psychrophilic characteristics: 75% grew at 3–5°. Most strains showed moderate growth at 37°, but only 7 formed red pigment at that temperature.
All strains resembled Serratia marcescens in morphology, containing minute coccoid rods smaller than those of coli-aerogenes bacteria. 相似文献

Reproductive stage water stress leads to spikelet sterility in wheat. Whereas drought stress at anthesis affects mainly grain size, stress at the young microspore stage of pollen development is characterized by abortion of pollen development and reduction in grain number. We identified genetic variability for drought tolerance at the reproductive stage. Drought‐tolerant wheat germplasm is able to maintain carbohydrate accumulation in the reproductive organs throughout the stress treatment. Starch depletion in the ovary of drought‐sensitive wheat is reversible upon re‐watering and cross‐pollination experiments indicate that the ovary is more resilient than the anther. The effect on anthers and pollen fertility is irreversible, suggesting that pollen sterility is the main cause of grain loss during drought conditions in wheat. The difference in storage carbohydrate accumulation in drought‐sensitive and drought‐tolerant wheat is correlated with differences in sugar profiles, cell wall invertase gene expression and expression of fructan biosynthesis genes in anther and ovary (sucrose : sucrose 1‐fructosyl‐transferase, 1‐SST; sucrose : fructan 6‐fructosyl‐transferase, 6‐SFT). Our results indicate that the ability to control and maintain sink strength and carbohydrate supply to anthers may be the key to maintaining pollen fertility and grain number in wheat and this mechanism may also provide protection against other abiotic stresses. 相似文献

Design and elevation of sex-attractant traps for pea moth, Cydia nigricana (Steph.) and the effect of plume shape on catches 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
- 1 Catches of male pea moths in six designs of trap, each containing (E,E)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate as an attractant, were compared; triangular-shaped traps caught most moths.
- 2 The vertical distribution of moths within a pea crop and the size of catches at different levels varied in different wind speeds. Three-quarter crop height is probably the optimum height for monitoring.
- 3 Five trap designs (including the triangular type) captured only 20–30% of individuals landing on them; water traps were slightly more efficient.
- 4 There was an eight-fold range in the number of moths caught depending on the sticky material used. ‘Bird-Tanglefoot’ was most effective.
- 5 Smoke plumes, emitted from different trap designs in the field to simulate plumes of attractant, were photographed and measured. The effect of trap design on plume shape was confirmed in wind tunnel tests.
- 6 Field tests showed that the more elongated the mean plume emitted from a trap the greater the catch.
- 7 The tracks of individual moths flying to traps are discussed in relation to current views on orientation to odour sources.

Males in many taxa exhibit behavioural plasticity in response to the perceived threat of sperm competition. Drosophila males prolong mating in response to the presence of competitor males before copulation. The benefits of this behaviour to males are evident in Drosophila melanogaster. However, the adaptive nature of the trait is challenged by the observation that it is present in four other Drosophila species, two of which are largely monandrous, raising the possibility that this plasticity is not evolutionarily labile. In the present study, behavioural plasticity and the mating system in Drosophila bifasciata Pominini (Diptera, Drosophilidae) are analyzed. By contrast to other Drosophila species, male D. bifasciata do not exhibit plasticity in copulation duration when competitor males are present before mating. Thus, plasticity in mating duration is not fixed in the genus Drosophila. The mating system of D. bifasciata is also examined. The species is polyandrous but, uncommonly for the genus Drosophila, males transfer a mating plug composed of sperm to females, which forms very shortly after copulation and fills the female uterus. We examined the pattern of territory settlement and its consequences for breeding success in the Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe on Bardsey Island, Wales, during the breeding seasons of 1991-93. Males returned earlier than females, and older males returned earlier than first-year breeders. Although their boundaries shifted between years, the general location of territories was consistent during the three-year study. There was a high degree of fidelity to area and territory between years for both sexes. The order of territory settlement, from which a territory rank was calculated, was highly consistent for males between years irrespective of individual settlement patterns and territory fidelity. Patterns of territory settlement were less predictable for females, although there was a significant correlation between the mean territory ranks of paired males and females. There was a male-biased sex ratio in each year, and between 5% and 26% of males remained unpaired throughout the breeding season. Male mating status and breeding success were dependent on arrival date, territory rank and breeding density. Early-arriving, usually older, males were able to settle on territories first and were more likely to pair, while later-arriving individuals were more likely to remain unmated. These effects were consistent between years, and consequently territories could be classified as either preferred (accounting for proportionately more breeding attempts) or non-preferred. Territory quality as opposed to individual quality appeared to explain much of the variation in breeding success, and both sexes benefited by breeding on preferred territories through enhanced breeding success and an increased probability that their offspring would be recruited to the population. 相似文献

Fusarium wilt, caused by the fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense ( Foc ), is one of the most destructive diseases of bananas. In the tropics and subtropics, Cavendish banana varieties are highly susceptible to Foc race 4 (VCG 0120). Cavendish selection GCTCV-218 was shown to have significantly lower disease severity and incidence compared with susceptible cultivar Williams in replicated greenhouse and field trials. Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was previously carried out to identify genes induced in roots of GCTCV-218, but not in Williams, after infection with Foc 'subtropical' race 4 . Seventy-nine SSH clones were sequenced and revealed 13 non-redundant gene fragments, several of which showed homology to defence-associated genes, including cell wall-strengthening genes. Quantitative RT-PCR was used to confirm up-regulation and differential expression of a number of genes throughout a time-course, following Foc infection in the tolerant GCTCV-218 when compared with susceptible cv. Williams . Tolerance of GCTCV-218 was linked to significantly increased induction of cell wall-associated phenolic compounds. 相似文献
