The effects of the circle-hook on hooking injury, fish size and catch rates were evaluated for mixed-species recreational boat fisheries in the Balearic Islands (NW Mediterranean). The relationships between deep-hooking incidence (the main cause of fish mortality) and hook type (circle hooks vs conventional J-hooks), fish size, and angler were tested. Results demonstrated that the size of the fish was the most important predictor of deep-hooking incidence, as a larger fish size resulted in an increase in deeper wounds. Hook type also had a significant effect on the deep-hooking rate. Specifically, the deep-hooking rate of the most frequently-caught species, Diplodus annularis (L.) and Coris julis (L.), was reduced by greater than half with the circle hooks. The mean size of the fish caught and the unhooking time were not affected by the use of circle hooks. Finally, their use resulted in no change in the catch per unit effort (CPUE) compared to conventional hooks for both univariate and multivariate procedures. Hence, circle hooks are a promising conservation tool for marine resources when linked with catch-and-release strategies. 相似文献

13C-NMR spectra are obtained in aqueous solution of dinucleoside monophosphates (ApG and GpA) and of their adducts formed by the addition of the carcinogen acetylaminofluorene (AAF) to the C8 position of the guanine. The base and sugar carbons of all dimers and adducts are assigned. The task of assigning base and carbohydrate resonances was accomplished using a series of reference compounds. Significant changes in many of the carbon resonances of the adducts are observed suggesting three general conformational changes, namely: (1) chemical shift changes are noted in base carbon atom resonances as a function of temperature and adduct formation which are indicative of stacking effects; (2) large upfield shifts of the furanose C2' resonance of the guanosine-adduct indicate a shift to higher populations of the syn conformation. Other shifts of carbohydrate resonances are indicative of a change in conformation of the carbohydrate itself. (3) Large temperature effects on linewidth of several fluorine and furanose resonances indicate interconversion of various conformers in the dimer adduct. 相似文献

Quantitative data were collected on the behaviour of one captive family group of common marmoset monkeys over some six months,
which included a period immediately before the birth of a third set of twins, and up to the birth of the fourth set. Data
were consistently collected on marking, auto and social grooming, as well as on three general categories of play behaviour.
In addition, observations were recorded on the carrying of infants by other members of their family, until the end of the
fourth week after the birth. The study demonstrated quantitative changes in the behaviour of juvenile and adult members of
the family, and indicated the time scale of increasing involvement of the youngest monkeys in some of the major patterns of

The purpose of this study was to relate regional variation in litter mass-loss rates (first year) in pine forests to climate
across a large, continental-scale area. The variation in mass-loss rate was analyzed using 39 experimental sites spanning
climatic regions from the subarctic to subtropical and Mediterranean: the latitudinal gradient ranged from 31 °N to 70 °N
and may represent the the largest geographical area that has ever been sampled and observed for the purpose of studying biogeochemical
processes. Because of unified site design and uniform laboratory procedures, data from all sites were directly comparable
and permitted a determination of the relative influence of climateversus substrate quality viewed from the perspective of broad regional scales.
Simple correlation applied to the entire data set indicated that annual actual evapotranspiration (AET) should be the leading
climatic constraint on mass-loss rates (Radj
2 = 0.496). The combination of AET, average July temp. and average annual temp. could explain about 70% of the sites' variability
on litter mass-loss. In an analysis of 23 Scots pine sites north of the Alps and Carpatians AET alone could account for about
65% of the variation and the addition of a substrate-quality variable was sufficiently significant to be used in a model.
The influence of litter quality was introduced into a model, using data from 11 sites at which litter of different quality
had been incubated. These sites are found in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland. At any one site most ( ≫ 90%) of
the variation in mass-loss rates could be explained by one of the litter-quality variables giving concentration of nitrogen,
phosphorus or water solubles. However, even when these models included nitrogen or phosphorus even small changes in potential
evapotranspiration resulted in large changes in early-phase decay rates.
Further regional subdivision of the data set, resulted in a range of strength in the relationship between loss rate and climatic
variables, from very weak in Central Europe to strong for the Scandinavian and Atlantic coast sites (Radj
2 = 0.912; AETversus litter mass loss). Much of the variation in observed loss rates could be related to continentalversus marine/Atlantic influences. Inland locations had mass-loss rates lower than should be expected on the basis of for example
AET alone. Attempts to include seasonality variables were not successful. It is clear that either unknown errors and biases,
or, unknown variables are causing these regional differences in response to climatic variables. Nevertheless these results
show the powerful influence of climate as a control of the broad-scale geography of mass-loss rates and substrate quality
at the stand level.
Some of these relationships between mass-loss rate and climatic variables are among the highest ever reported, probably because
of the care taken to select uniform sites and experimental methods. This suggest that superior, base line maps of predicted
mass-loss rates could be produced using climatic data. These models should be useful to predict the changing equilibrium litter

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is the most common autosomal recessive disorder among southern African Blacks. There are three forms that account for almost all OCA types in this region. Tyrosinase-positive OCA (OCA2), which is the most common, affects approximately 1/3,900 newborns and has a carrier frequency of approximately 1/33. It is caused by mutations in the P gene on chromosome 15. Brown OCA (BOCA) and rufous OCA (ROCA) account for the majority of the remaining phenotypes. The prevalence of BOCA is unknown, but for ROCA it is approximately 1/8,500. Linkage analysis performed on nine ROCA families showed that ROCA was linked to an intragenic marker at the TYRP1 locus (maximum LOD score = 3.80 at straight theta=.00). Mutation analysis of 19 unrelated ROCA individuals revealed a nonsense mutation at codon 166 (S166X) in 17 (45%) of 38 ROCA chromosomes, and a second mutation (368delA) was found in an additional 19 (50%) of 38 chromosomes; mutations were not identified in the remaining 2 ROCA chromosomes. In one family, two siblings with a phenotypically unclassified form of albinism were found to be compound heterozygotes for mutations (S166X/368delA) at the TYRP1 locus and were heterozygous for a common 2.7-kb deletion in the P gene. These findings have highlighted the influence of genetic background on phenotype, in which the genotype at one locus can be influenced by the genotype at a second locus, leading to a modified phenotype. ROCA, which in southern African Blacks is caused by mutations in the TYRP1 gene, therefore should be referred to as "OCA3," since this is the third locus that has been shown to cause an OCA phenotype in humans. 相似文献

Summary Milbemycin production byStreptomyces hygroscopicus RB4569D was examined in media containing different carbohydrates. Total milbemycin titer could be increased by substitution of fructose for glucose and by selection of the appropriate starch type. Total titer could be further enhanced by increasing the concentration of fructose and/or starch in the medium. Rates of carbohydrate utilization were shown to be independent of their initial concentration and increased titers in high carbohydrate media were shown to be due to a prolonged production phase rather than an increased accretion rate. The pattern of individual milbemycin components was governed by the carbon:nitrogen ratio of the medium rather than carbohydrate concentration and there was a critical C:N ratio below which no milbemycin was produced. 相似文献

Aim Assessment of cross-continental similarities and differences in climatic limiting values for deciduous tree species and of the possible deterministic influence of past and present climatic differences on the modern tree flora in two regions.
Location The deciduous forest regions of western Eurasia and eastern North America.
Methods Based on species distribution data (range maps) and climate site data, the realized climatic niches of 137 deciduous tree species from the two regions were quantified using climatic envelopes. To compare these envelopes on the two continents, a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed, and principal components analysis was used to check cluster consistency.
Results Significant differences do exist for upper limits of winter temperatures and for lower limits of summer temperatures between Western Eurasia and eastern North America. Lower limits for the annual water balance also appear different, suggesting that the deciduous trees may be more drought-tolerant in western Eurasia than in eastern North America. Climatic range types generated by the cluster analysis can be characterized, according to the distribution of the species, as boreal-temperate, northern temperate, temperate, southern temperate, and Appalachian. Five of the eight clusters contain trees from both regions, but three groups consist only of American species that have no European counterparts.
Main conclusions Differences in temperature limitations can be explained by location on the east versus west side of the continents and by the almost complete lack of warm moist areas in western Eurasia. In the present study, Xyrichtys novacula (Labridae) were sampled at five locations around the islands of Ibiza and Formentera (western Mediterranean Sea). Isotopic signatures of δ13C, δ15N and the C:N ratio were analysed in relation to locality, sex and size differences. δ13C and δ15N partitioning was also studied in the reproductive spawning period. There were significant differences in the δ13C signature between localities for both sexes, but not for δ15N. Sex differences were also found with a mean ±s.e . value of ?17·38 ± 0·06‰δ13C and 8·36 ± 0·05‰δ15N for females and ?17·17 ± 0·07‰δ13C and 8·80 ± 0·06‰δ15N for males. Increasing total length in both sexes was positively correlated with δ15N enrichment and a significant positive linear regression was established for both variables. During the reproductive spawning period, there were changes in δ13C fractioning with enrichment in postspawning females and males (with respect to prespawning and spawning periods) and δ15N impoverishment in postspawning females (with respect to prespawning and spawning periods). Xyrichtys novacula uses local food sources, as confirmed by δ13C and δ15N, and females and males use different food sources, thus avoiding intraspecific competition. This was confirmed by δ15N enrichment as size increased. Spawning leads to special requirements for gonad maturation, which is reflected in the isotopic signatures for both sexes. 相似文献
