Abstract.  In some parasitoid species, the serosa membrane breaks apart at hatching and produces teratocyte cells that assume various functions (immunossupression, secretion and nutrition) mediating host–parasitoid relationships. Teratocyte growth pattern may thus reflect the host suitability for a parasitoid. The teratocyte growth pattern (increase in size and number of teratocytes as a function of time) is studied and used as an indirect measure of fitness to compare the development of the endoparasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae in a marginal host, the coccinellid Harmonia axyridis , and in a suitable host, Coleomegilla maculata . Indirect measures of fitness recorded in both host species confirm that C. maculata is a suitable host for D. coccinellae contrary to the marginal host H. axyridis. According to regression analysis, teratocyte numbers decrease linearly whereas teratocyte size increases linearly with time in the suitable host C. maculata (larvae or adults). In the marginal host, parasitism occurs only in the larval stage where a delay in the parasitoid larval development is observed. Increase in teratocyte size is also highly variable. The teratocyte growth pattern of the parasitoid in the marginal host does not follow the linear model found in the suitable host. Teratocyte growth pattern may be a useful criterion to evaluate host-suitability and host range of parasitoids.  相似文献

Development and structure of the pericarp of Lannea discolor (Sonder) Engl.(Anacardiaceae). The exocarp develops from the outer epidermis and subepidermal, parenchymatous cell layers of the ovary wall. A parenchymatous zone with secretory cavities more or less delimits the exocarp internally. The inner part of the parenchymatous mesocarp is tanniniferous. The parenchymatous transition zone between mesocarp and sclercnchymatous endocarp or sderocarp, contains vascular tissue. The inner endocarp and operculum develop from the inner epidermis and subepidermal parenchyma of the ovary wall, while the outer endocarp develops from the parenchymatous zone with procambium strandS. Comparing the pericarp of L.discolor with those of Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra and Rhus lancea , the close affinity with Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra is evident.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure the feeding rates, preferences, survival rates, maturation times, and weight gain of four common species of grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) on four lines of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius). When safflower lines were presented individually, all were readily consumed although consumption differed significantly according to grasshopper species, age and sex, and to safflower line. Consumption was greatest on a safflower line devoid of spines. However, grasshoppers also fed readily on spiny lines, and results of experiments in which all safflower lines were presented together indicated preferences that did not necessarily correspond to the results of the single-line feeding trials. Camnula pellucida, a graminivorous species, did feed on safflower, but restricted feeding almost exclusively to stem cambium, whereas Melanoplus bivittatus, M. packardii and M. sanguinipes fed mainly on the heads, flowers and leaves. Highly significant differences in grasshopper maturation time and weight gain were apparent among grasshopper species, and among safflower lines. Seedtec-5, the line which was least digestible, least consumed and least preferred nevertheless yielded rapid development and the greatest body weights of grasshoppers. All species of Melanoplus developed more quickly and gained more weight on safflower than on wheat. One species, M. packardii, was more able to utilise safflower than its congeners, and may gain competitive advantage if safflower becomes widely grown.  相似文献

Calli derived from seedlings of the parasitic plant Orobancheaegyptiaca were grown on enriched nutrient agar. Growth wasenhanced by the addition of 0.1 mg 1–1 NAA and 5 % coconutmilk. The calli developed two kinds of elongated protrusions:thin ones which resemble the young root radicle and thick oneswhich resemble the adventitious roots of Orobanche plants. SINGLE-CELL pacemaker activity is interesting because of its function in temporal organization and information processing in the nervous system. Many invertebrate neurones are regularly and autonomously active1,2. Although the pacemaker rhythm probably originates within the recorded neurone, it is not clear whether it originates in the axonal tree or in the cell soma. Alving3 approached this question by studying pacemaker activity in the soma of Aplysia nerve cells, after ligaturing the axonal stem with fine sutures. The study described here presents evidence that nerve cell somata which are completely dissociated from all surrounding tissue and with or without axons, are able to maintain regular autorhythmic activity for periods of more than 24 h. The method of complete isolation of cells represents some progress over Alving's method because it is easier to accomplish, has a larger yield of viable neurones and allows longer recording periods.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Eimeria carolinensis n.sp. (Sporozoa) is described from oöcysts in the feces of the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque) taken in the vicinity of Durham, North Carolina. The oöcysts are ellipsoidal to elongate ellipsoidal, 14–19.5 × 10–13 μ, mean of 17.6 × 11.3 μ. Micropyle absent. Oöcyst wall composed of 2 layers. A refractile granule present but no oöcyst residuum. Flow cytometry has been used to make direct measurements of rates of uptake of latex microspheres from dilute, monodisperse suspensions by Tetrahymena pyriformis. Measurements were made for five different sizes of microspheres, ranging from 1.09 to 6.17 μm diameter. Fractions of cells in the population that did not ingest the microspheres offered were also determined. In addition, the size distributions, as indicated by the forward angle light scattering intensity which is measured by the instrument, were determined for the whole population and for the subpopulations of cells that did and did not ingest the particles, for each particle size used. It was found that the fraction of cells that did not ingest the particles was small and independent of particle size when this was less than about 2.7 μm, but increased with particle size when particle size was increased above this value. The so-called maximum clearance rate, which can be calculated from the data, was found to increase monotonically with particle size if it were based only on those cells which actually ingested the particles offered. However, a plot of maximum clearance rate vs. particle size exhibited a maximum if the clearance rate were based on all cells present in the population.  相似文献
