Abstract. The semiochemicals carbon dioxide (CO2) and l-octen-3-ol (octenol) were evaluated as attractants at several release rates, alone and in combination, for the major coastal species of biting midges in Georgia: Culicoides furens, C.hollensis and C.melleus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). The data show that CO2 is an effective attractant for the females of all three species, but each has a different response pattern. In contrast, octenol was an effective attractant only for C.furens , either alone or in combination with CO2; octenol had a repellent effect on the other two species. The combination of octenol and C02 had a synergistic effect on the collections of C.furens.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Larvae of two bivoltine species of leaf-mining Lepidop-tera, Acrocercops sp. and Neurobathra strigifinitella (Clem.), restrict feeding to young, second-flush leaves of their host trees in north Florida.
2. During 1980 and 1981, densities of both species varied greatly among thirty small water oaks ( Quercus nigra ), as did timing and extent of secondary leaf production.
3. In both years leaf-miner density at the end of the first generation (mid-August) was positively correlated with secondary leaf production.
4. Five trees abscised their leaves and reflushed new ones at atypical times of the growing season. When refoliation coincided with emergence of ovipositing adults, Acrocercops sp. and N.strigifinitella densities increased dramatically, indicating that both species are at times limited by availability of young leaves.
5. By staggering termination of diapause these leaf miners can exploit a temporally variable resource.  相似文献

The young reproductive apex in Bajra (Pennisetum typhoides S.& H.) possesses a biseriate tunica and a massive corpus.The cells of three or four peripheral layers and six to eightlayers at the summit of the apex are eumeristematic. The centralregion consists of elongated, highly vacuolated, and lightlystained cells arranged in files. The initiation of the spikeletbud is by periclinal divisions first in the corpus and laterin T2 cells. Similarly the longer bristle or the extension ofthe fascicular axis develops from the corpus and T2 cells. Theother bristles develop from the tunica layers. The chaff membersare initiated and develop like a leaf. The development of thestamen resembles that of a spikelet or an axillary bud. Difference testing methods are extensively used in a variety of applications from small sensory evaluation tests to large scale consumer tests. A central issue in the use of these tests is their statistical power, or the probability that if a specified difference exists it will be demonstrated as a significant difference in a difference test. A general equation for the power of any discrimination method is given. A general equation for the sample size required to meet Type I and Type II error specifications is also given. Sample size tables for the 2-alternative forced choice (2-AFC), 3-AFC, the duo-trio and the triangular methods are given. Tables of the psychometric functions for the 2-AFC, 3-AFC, triangular and duo-trio methods are also given.  相似文献

Allopatric speciation is thought to occur in the absence of gene flow, thereby suggesting that widespread vagile species might be less likely to generate restricted sister taxa because of a lack of isolation. The butterfly genus Vanessa provides an ideal test of this concept, as it contains some of the most cosmopolitan and vagile species of butterflies on the planet, as well as some highly restricted taxa. Given the age of these groups, this arrangement offers a special opportunity to examine the relationship between vagility and phylogeny in generating novel taxa; specifically, does the vagility of some lineages impede allopatric speciation, leaving restricted clades more speciose? A phylogenetic hypothesis is proposed for all species belonging to the butterfly genus Vanessa based on DNA sequences from one mitochondrial and eight nuclear gene regions. The resulting topology shows very little conflict among gene regions, with five well‐supported clades corresponding to morphologically consistent species groups. The data very strongly indicate a polyphyletic genus Antanartia, and thus to preserve monophyly two species previously assigned to Antanartia are transferred to Vanessa, Vanessa hippomene comb.n. and Vanessa dimorphica comb.n. , resulting in a total of 22 species placed in Vanessa. A biogeographical analysis shows that in many cases the most geographically restricted species are sister to geographically widespread species, suggesting dispersal and allopatric speciation. Surprisingly, in almost all cases the divergences between widespread and restricted species are quite old (>5 Ma), suggesting long‐term isolation and stability of both vagile and sedentary species, despite the high (even intercontinental) vagility of many extant species and, by extension, ancestral species. The biogeography of Vanessa suggests that species vagility and allopatry do not fully explain the forces governing cladogenesis in this remarkable genus.  相似文献

Despite many decades of multilateral global efforts, a significant portion of the world population continues to be plagued with one or more mosquito‐vectored diseases. These include malaria and filariasis, as well as numerous arboviral‐associated illnesses, such as dengue and yellow fevers. The dynamics of disease transmission by mosquitoes is complex, and involves both vector competence and vectorial capacity. One area of intensive effort is the study of chemosensory‐driven behaviours in the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae Giles, the modulation of which is likely to provide opportunities for disease reduction. In this context, recent studies characterize a large divergent family of An. gambiae odorant receptors (AgORs) that play critical roles in olfactory signal transduction. This work facilitates high‐throughput, cell‐based calcium mobilization screens of AgOR‐expressing human embryonic kidney cells identifying a large number of conventional AgOR ligands, as well as the first nonconventional Orco (olfactory receptor co‐receptor) family agonist. As such, ligand‐mediated modulation serves as a proof‐of‐concept demonstration that AgORs represent viable targets for high‐throughput screening and for the eventual development of behaviour‐modifying olfactory compounds. Such attractants or repellents could foster malaria reduction programmes.  相似文献
