Regulation of the L-arabinose transport operons in Escherichia coli   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
l-Arabinose is transported into Escherichia coli via two independent transport systems, a system possessing relatively low affinity for arabinose, the araE system, and a system of higher affinity for arabinose, the araFG system. In the work reported here we demonstrate that insertion of the Mu-lac bacteriophage isolated by Casadaban &; Cohen (1979) permits a reliable measurement of the expression of these two operons. Using appropriate Mu-lac insertion strains we found that both of the arabinose transport operons can be induced approximately 150-fold by the presence of arabinose, and that induction of both transport operons requires CRP (cyclic AMP receptor protein), but that their catabolite sensitivities differ from one another. In addition, we show that the araC+ allele is dominant to the Cc allele in the control of the transport operons, just as is found in the araBAD operon.  相似文献

Cleavage of tubulin by subtilisin removes a small (Mr less than 2000) fragment from the C-terminal end of both alpha and beta subunits. The resulting protein is much reduced in negative charge. The cleaved, less acidic protein retains its competence to polymerize in a GTP-dependent and cold-, GDP-, and podophyllotoxin-sensitive manner and assembles into sheets or bundles of twisted filaments. The critical concentration for polymerization of the cleaved protein is about 50-fold lower than that for intact tubulin. It is proposed that the C termini of the subunits normally impede polymerization.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Eurytoma gigantea Walsh is a specialist parasitoid of the tephritid gallmaker Eurosta solidaginis (Fitch).
2. In the natural environment the incidence of parasitism by Eurytoma is greater in small galls than in large ones.
3. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that small galls are not more frequently discovered; however, oviposition attempts on small galls were more likely to be successful.
4. Eurytoma spends much time probing galls too big to penetrate; this leads to a decrease in foraging efficiency when many large galls are present.
5. The chance of successfully penetrating a gall depends on the thickness of the gall wall and the length of the parasitoid's ovipositor.
6. A simulation model was constructed which shows that a gallmak-er's chance of being parasitized depends on gall size, the number of parasitoids that discover the gall, and their ovipositor lengths.  相似文献

In investigations based on the use of a highly sensitive test system permitting the detection of normal human antibodies to S. aureus peptidoglycan, the antigenic relationships between the peptidoglycans of S. aureus and other representatives of the genus Staphylococcus have been studied. Among other staphylococcal species, S. simulans, S. xylosus, S. hyicus, S. cohnii, S. hyicus s. s. chromogenes have been found to possess peptidoglycans most closely related to S. aureus peptidoglycans, while S. warneri and S. epidermidis peptidoglycans have proved to be least closely related to it.  相似文献
