Familial DiGeorge syndrome and associated partial monosomy of chromosome 22

Summary Partial monosomy of 22q due to an unbalanced 4;22 translocation was seen in a 2-month-old male with Type I truncus arterious, dysmorphic features, and T-cell abnormalities. The family history revealed a previous sib with Type I truncus arteriosus, thymic aplasia, and parathyroid hypoplasia noted on postmortem examination, consistent with DiGeorge syndrome. Evaluation of the asymptomatic mother of these two patients revealed partial T-cell deficiency and the same unbalanced translocation with deletion of proximal 22qll. These findings provide further evidence that some cases of complete or partial DiGeorge syndrome are associated with monosomy of the proximal long arm of chromosome 22, and they may explain many, if not all, familial cases of the syndrome.Supported in part by National Foundation-March of Dimes Grant No. 2-161/C-331. A resonance Raman study of Ambystoma tigrinum hemoglobins: evidence for intraspecies hemepocket variations

Using resonance Raman difference spectroscopy, the Raman-active vibrational modes of hemoglobins from adult, neotenic, and larval forms of the salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum have been compared to each other and to human hemoglobin. The local heme environment of the adult and neotenic proteins were identical and differed from that of the larval protein. Differences were observed in modes sensitive to porphyrin pi electron density and axial ligation. Systematic differences were also observed between human and adult salamander hemoglobins particularly in modes sensitive to the heme vinyl environment. The relationship between these environmental differences, oxygen binding affinity, and the effects of allosteric modulators are discussed.     

Role of pituitary hormones in regulating renal vitamin D metabolism in man.

Studies in animals and tissue culture have shown the importance of prolactin and growth hormone in regulating renal 1 alpha-hydroxylase activity and plasma concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25(OH)2D3). Evidence for a similar role for these hormones in man was sought by using a radioreceptor assay to measure plasma 1,25(OH)2D3 concentrations in 20 normal subjects, 12 patients receiving dialysis, 11 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, 10 pregnant women, seven women with prolactinoma, and 14 patients with acromegaly. Circulating 1,25(OH)2D3 concentrations were appreciably raised in the patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and the pregnant women (P less than 0.001), slightly but significantly increased in the patients with prolactinoma (P less than 0.05), and greatly raised in those with acromegaly (P less than 0.001). These results suggest that prolactin and growth hormone are important regulators of renal vitamin D metabolism in the physiological conditions of pregnancy, lactation, and growth in man.     

Germination of the chlamydospores of Candida albicans

Using a slide culture technique, it was determined unequivocally that the chlamydospore of Candida albicans does germinate. The germination was by way of a multiple-budding process which was associated mostly with young spores following their transfer to a fresh environment. It is concluded the chlamydospore of C. albicans is a reproductive cell with a transient viability.     

Population dynamics in variable environments. II. Correlated environments,sensitivity analysis and dynamics

Mean and mean square number are studied for age-structured populations with serially correlated temporally fluctuating vital rates. Results are that (1) Moments of population number can be used effectively to analyse growth rates of the coefficient of variation and an approximate median population number. (2) Analytical approximations to the growth rates of moments reveal dynamic consequences of covarying phenotypic traits and of temporal correlation along environmental sequences. (3) Dynamic properties can be explicitly related to the static sensitivity of an average vital rate matrix. (4) The use of (1), (2) and (3) allows an extension of many applications of static vital rate theory to dynamics with fluctuating rates.     

On the purification of beta-bungarotoxin

It has recently been claimed that our beta-bungarotoxin preparation contained three contaminants, including a postsynaptic toxin. We have extended our purification procedure and found no evidence of such contaminants.
