The results of an experiment to study the interaction of a beam of 670A MeV neon ions incident on a water column set to different thicknesses were compared with a "first principles" transport calculation in the straight-ahead approximation. This calculation assumes that the nuclear interactions of the incident particles lead to a secondary particle with the velocity of the incident projectile at the interaction point moving in the direction of the incident projectile. Subsequent nuclear interactions of the fragments were taken into account partially, by calculating the nuclear attenuation of the fragments in the residual material, but were not taken into account as a source of further nuclear interaction products. Fluence spectra were calculated per unit incident neon fluence for 14 absorber thicknesses. The acceptance for each fragment was calculated based on a knowledge of the material in the beam and of the beam extraction energy. The theoretical spectra were multiplied by the calculated acceptance and convoluted with the LET resolution associated with the experiment. The stopping power used in the transport calculation was found to predict a range approximately 1.6% shorter than that given by experiment; this small difference resulted in significant discrepancies between theory and experiment in the stopping region. For particles not stopping in the absorber, the transport calculation was accurate to within 30% for depths less than approximately 15 cm; the effects of tertiary particles become significant at greater depth. 相似文献

We describe a high-pressure reactor system suitable for simultaneous hyperbaric and hydrostatic pressurization of bacterial cultures at elevated temperatures. For the deep-sea thermophile ES4, the growth rate at 500 atm (1 atm = 101.29 kPa) and 95 degrees C under hydrostatic pressure was ca. three times the growth rate under hyperbaric pressure and ca. 40% higher than the growth rate at 35 atm. 相似文献

Questions concerning clusters of cancer cases frequently arise in public health practice. The process of investigating any
such cluster requires awareness that such case groupings can easily occur by chance and that any search for biologically meaningful
causes will be severely constrained by various methodologic difficulties. These include (1) the long and probably variable
latent periods between causative events and cancer diagnosis, (2) the limited numbers of cases available for study in any
given cluster situation, and (3) the clinical non-specificity of cancer cases whereby no readily available means are at hand
to identify the specific causes for any particular case. Evaluation of any given cluster should involve careful consideration
of such limitations, together with a preliminary assessment of the specific cases involved and their community or workplace
setting, before more intensive study is undertaken.

The position of individual fruit on kiwifruit vines (Actinidiadeliciosa var. deliciosa) grown on a horizontal trellis (pergola)and on a T-bar trellis was determined using a theodolite. Thephysical, chemical, and postharvest attributes of the fruitwere related to their position on the vine during development. Fruit from the pergola vines were more numerous, of lesser weight,with lower concentrations of most mineral nutrients, but greaterconcentrations of soluble solids, and similar flesh firmnessafter 12 weeks of storage at 0 °C, than fruit from the T-barvines. The position on the vine accounted for most of the variationin the attributes of the fruit. Differences between fruit ona single lateral accounted for 43-56% of the variation. Variationbetween vines was relatively small (< 4% of the total variance). The heavier fruit were located at the apical ends of the laterals,while greater concentrations of soluble solids were associatedwith fruit located closer to the cordon. The larger fruit fromthe pergola vines developed from the early opening flowers.A similar relationship existed initially for the T-bar vines,but a reduction in growth of fruit from the early opening flowers8 weeks after anthesis resulted in a more even distributionof fruit size at harvest. The strongest relationship between mineral composition and postharvestattributes of the fruit was with soluble solids concentration(29-46% of the variance). The relationship with flesh firmnesswas weak (r = -0·14 to -0·32). Individual elementscould not be considered in isolation but rather in groups ofelements. Nitrogen was grouped strongly with phosphorus, sulphur,potassium, and copper, while calcium was linked with a secondgroup which included manganese and zinc. These two groups werenegatively related to one another. The greatest proportion of fruit with superior characteristicswas located in the denser parts of the canopy. In order to examine the likely impacts of climate change on fish stocks, it is necessary to couple the output from large‐scale climate models to fisheries population simulations. Using projections of future North Sea surface temperatures for the period 2000–2050 from the Hadley General Circulation Model, we estimate the likely effects of climate change on the North Sea cod population. Output from the model suggests that increasing temperatures will lead to an increased rate of decline in the North Sea cod population compared with simulations that ignore environmental change. Although the simulation developed here is relatively simplistic, we demonstrate that inclusion of environmental factors in population models can markedly alter one's perception of how the population will behave. The development of simulations incorporating environment effects will become increasingly important as the impacts of climate change on the marine ecosystem become more pronounced. 相似文献

Abstract. Single species and bivariate distribution patterns in a semi-arid shrubland in southeastern Spain, dominated by the tall leguminous shrub Retama sphaerocarpa, were investigated by second-order spatial analysis based on Ripley's K-function. Shrubs were significantly clumped because of a strong association of dwarf shrubs, mostly Artemisia barrelieri, under the canopy of Retama. Retama shrubs were randomly distributed, but when different size-classes were analysed separately, the pattern changed from significantly clumped to random and then to regular with increasing canopy diameter, suggesting increasing intraspecific competition with shrub size. Artemisia was significantly clumped at all scales because of aggregation under the canopy of large Retama shrubs. The association between the species became stronger with increasing canopy diameter of Retama shrubs, suggesting that facilitation prevailed over interspecific competition because of niche separation in different tiers, both above and below ground. Retama shrub size thus determined both the type of pattern for its own size class and tier, and the scale and intensity of the association with its understorey shrubs. 相似文献
