Sexual aggression by intruders in hooded crow <Emphasis Type="Italic">Corvus cornix</Emphasis>

The hooded crow Corvus cornix is a west Palaearctic, solitary nesting, monogamous corvid. In the breeding season, populations are characterized by a social organization wherein breeding pairs are territorial and non-breeding individuals, called floaters, live in flocks. During a study of the breeding ecology of the hooded crow, conducted in a protected flooded area, we monitored nests with video cameras. We recorded two separate incidents when intruders attacked a female at the nest. We believe that she remained in the nest in order to prevent the strangers cannibalizing the nestlings by mantling over the brood. The spatio-temporal occurrence of these attacks suggests that the observed behaviour is intraspecific sexual aggression wherein non-breeding males mounted an immobilized female.     

Very-Long-Chain Wax Constituents from Primula veris and P. acaulis: Does the Paradigm of Non-Branched vs. Branched Chain Dominance Universally Hold in all Plant Taxa?

Herein n-, iso- and anteiso-series of very-long-chained (VLC) alkanes (C₂₁–C₃₅), fatty acid benzyl esters (FABEs; C₂₀–C₃₂), and 2-alkanones (C₂₃–C₃₅) were identified in the wax of Primula veris L. and P. acaulis (L.) L. (Primulaceae). For the very first time in a sample of natural origin, the presence of iso- and anteiso-VLC FABEs and 2-alkanones was unequivocally confirmed by synthetic work, derivatization, and NMR. It should be noted that the studied species produced unusually high amounts of branched wax constituents (e. g., >50 % of 2-alkanones were branched isomers). The domination of iso-isomers, probably biosynthesized from leucine-derived starters, is a unique feature in the Plant Kingdom. The plant organ distribution of these VLC compounds in P. acaulis samples (different habitats and phenological phases) pointed to their possible ecological value. This was supported by a eutectic behavior of binary blends of FABEs and alkanes, as well as by high UV-C absorption by FABEs.     

Further investigation on nuclear transplantation in different orders of teleost: the combination of the nucleus of Tilapia (Oreochromis nilotica) and the cytoplasm of Loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus).

The nucleus of a blastula cell from Tilapia (Oreochromis nilotica, family Cichlidae, order Perciformes) was transplanted into an enucleated egg of Loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus, family Cobitidae, order Cypriniformes). From among 3747 nucleo-cytoplasmic hybrid (NCH) eggs two NCH larval fish (0.05%) were obtained; one died on the 6th day and the other died on the 12th day after the operation. Morphological examinations showed that both NCH larval fish had developed normally with an opened mouth except they could not take food after complete utilization of their egg yolk on the 5th day of development. The possible mechanisms for obtaining such inter-order NCH larval fish are discussed. This is the first report indicating that inter-order NCH larval fish can be obtained in spite of their evolutionary divergence.     

A two-step procedure for coupling development and usage of a pair of human neck models

Both finite element models and multi-body models of human head-neck complex had been widely used in neck injuries analysis, as the former could be used to generate detailed stress strain information and the later could generate dynamic responses with high efficiency. Sometimes, detailed stress and strain information were hoped to be obtained more efficiently, but current methods were not effective enough when they were used to analyze responses of human head neck complex to long duration undulate accelerations. In this paper, a two-step procedure for ‘parallel’ development and ‘sequential’ usage of a pair of human head neck models was discussed. The pair of models contained a finite element model and a multi-body model, which were developed based on the coupling ‘parallel’ procedure using the same bio-realistic geometry. After being validated using available data, the pair of human neck models were applied to analyze biomechanical responses of pilot’s neck during arrested landing operation according to the ‘sequential’ procedure, because typical sustained undulate accelerations usually appeared during such processes. The results, including both kinematic and detailed biomechanical responses of human head-neck complex, were obtained with preferable efficiency. This research provided an effective way for biomechanical analysis of human head neck responses to sustained undulate accelerations.     

小鼠2—细胞胚胎单个卵裂球体外培养及其发育形成囊胚的玻璃化冷冻保存技术的研究（简报）

The present experiments were designed to study the effects of glucose, EDTA, glutamine on the in vitro development of single blastomeres from 2-cell embryos in mouse, and the efficiency of cryopreservation of blastocysts from single blastomers with different vitrification. Single blastomeres derived from female ICR x male BDF1 2-cell embryos were cultured in mKRB with or without glucose, EDTA and glutamine, respectively. The expanded blastocyst rates were significantly different between in mKRB with glucose and without glucose (34% vs 65%); The blastomeres were cultured in mKRB with EDTA and glutamine but glucose, the expanded blastocyst rate (90%) was significantly higher than other groups. The blastocysts derived from single blastomeres were vitrified in liquid nitrogen after equilibration in GFS40 for 0.5-2 min, the survival rate 24%-51%. The blastocysts were pretreated in mPBS with 10% glycerol for 5 min, followed by exposure to GFS40 at 25 degrees C for 0.5 min, then vitrified in liquid nitrogen(two-step method), the survival rate was 61%. However, the survival rates increased to 64% and 70% when the blastocysts were vitrified(one-step method) ater equilibration in EFS40 at 25 degrees C for 0.5-1 min.
