A case of ameloblastic fibroma of the jaw in an 18-year-old patient is presented. Fine needle aspiration cytologic smears showed two different types of cellular elements: a glandlike epithelial component, arranged in bidimensional, well-outlined clusters of basaloid cells with palisading of the columnar cells at the borders of those clusters, and a mesenchymal component that consisted of loosely arranged fusiform cells. These cytologic features appear to be sufficiently characteristic to suggest a diagnosis of ameloblastic fibroma by fine needle aspiration.  相似文献

Adrenomedullin (AM) is a potent vasodilator peptide present in the lung of mammals where it is expressed mainly in the columnar epithelium and alveolar macrophages. AM increases the secretion of phosphatidylcholine by type II pneumocytes, which suggests a role as an autocrine modulator of surfactant secretion. In this study we show the expression of an AM-like protein in the lung of the pigeon, Columba livia. Using an antibody against its human ortholog, AM-like immunoreactivity was found to be associated with membranous structures of the multivesicular bodies of type II pneumocytes. We also studied the differential expression of AM-like peptide in the lung of pigeons exposed to polluted city air vs cleaner countryside conditions and found that AM-like expression was higher in city animals. Similar results were obtained in an experimental study in which pigeons were exposed to increasing concentrations of a single pollutant, ozone. Taken together, our findings support the implication of AM in the response of type II pneumocytes to air pollutants.  相似文献

Summary Roots, stems, or leaves of American (Panax quinquefolium) and Korean (Panax ginsing) ginseng were grown as callus or supension tissue cultures. Tissue cultures ofP. ginseng would occasionally form plantlets. The fundamental chemical composition, inorganic analysis, and saponin (panaquilin) content of American and Korean ginseng plants and tissue cultures were determined. The crude saponin content is very similar to, but approximately one-half (1.3%, fresh weight) of that present in ginseng roots. Two-dimensional thin layer chromatographic analysis revealed minor differences in the panaquilins present in American and Korean ginseng tissue cultures. The sapogenin, panaxadiol, was isolated from Korean ginseng callus.  相似文献

The endemic New Zealand ground wētā (Hemiandrus sp. ‘promontorius’) has a Naturally Uncommon conservation status. This is because of the paucity of information on its density and distribution. Here, the biology, density and distribution of a population of this wētā found in and around vineyards in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough was studied. Wētā density was assessed in vineyards, paddocks and shrublands in this valley. Soil moisture, penetration resistance, pH and organic matter were recorded at locations with and without wētā. Wētā density in vineyards was significantly higher than in either paddocks or shrub habitats. In vineyards, the density of this insect was significantly higher under-vines than in the inter-rows. Higher numbers of this wētā were found in moist soils that required lower force to burrow. Females laid an average of 55 eggs between March and April, which hatched in September. These findings highlight the intersection between agriculture and conservation.  相似文献

Distinguishing morphologically cryptic taxa, by definition, requires genetic data such as DNA sequences. However, DNA sequences may not be obtained easily for taxa from remote sites. Here we provide the details of a high-resolution melt-curve-based method using taxon-specific primers that can distinguish two taxa of Adélie penguins, and that will be usable in Antarctica when combined with some of the newly developed field-deployable thermal cyclers. We suggest that the wider adoption of field-deployable polymerase-chain-reaction-based techniques will enable faster assignation of haplotype to individuals in situ, and so allow the targeting of observations and sample collection to specimens relevant to the research question. Targeting individuals will also reduce the need to repeatedly handle animals and reduce the time and travel required to complete field work.  相似文献

Human C4b-binding protein (C4BP) is an important regulator of the complement system that also binds and inactivates the anticoagulant vitamin K-dependent protein S. These two activities are performed by two distinct polypeptides of 70 kDa and 45 kDa known as alpha and beta chains, respectively. C4BP is present in plasma in various isoforms with different alpha/beta composition. We report here that C4BPbeta, but not C4BPalpha, is expressed in adult human ovary. Expression of C4BPbeta was detected in all ovarian biopsies analyzed (n = 15), independently of age and phase of the menstrual cycle. In situ hybridization and immunostaining analyses on cryostat sections demonstrated expression of C4BPbeta in both regressing corpus luteum and corpus albicans, but not in the follicles, the corpus luteum, the ovary stroma or the vascular cells. In addition, we noted that the expression pattern of the C4BPbeta mRNA resembles that described for the connective tissue that invades the degenerating corpus luteum and causes a progressive fibrosis that gradually converts it into a scar, the corpus albicans. RT-PCR and immunostaining analyses of primary cultures derived from human ovaries demonstrated the presence of fibroblast-like cells that express C4BPbeta. As a whole, these data suggest a role for the C4BPbeta in human ovary during the healing and scar resorption processes that leads to the formation of the corpus albicans and its replacement by ovarian stroma.  相似文献
