Forests are vital components of the urban landscape because they provide ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, storm‐water mitigation, and air‐quality improvement. To enhance these services, cities are investing in programs to create urban forests. A major unknown, however, is whether planted trees will grow into the mature, closed‐canopied forest on which ecosystem service provision depends. We assessed the influence of biotic and abiotic land management on planted tree performance as part of urban forest restoration in New York City, U.S.A. Biotic treatments were designed to improve tree growth, with the expectation that higher tree species composition (six vs. two) and greater stand complexity (with shrubs vs. without) would facilitate tree performance. Similarly, the abiotic treatment (compost amendment vs. without) was expected to increase tree performance by improving soil conditions. Growth and survival was measured for approximately 1,300 native saplings across three growing seasons. The biotic and abiotic treatments significantly improved tree performance, where shrub presence increased tree height for five of the six tree species, and compost increased basal area and stem volume of all species. Species‐specific responses, however, highlighted the difficulty of achieving rapid growth with limited mortality. Pioneer species had the highest growth in stem volume over 3 years (up to 3,500%), but also the highest mortality (up to 40%). Mid‐successional species had lower mortality (<16%), but also the slowest growth in volume (approximately 500% in volume). Our results suggest that there will be trade‐offs between optimizing tree growth versus survival when implementing urban tree planting initiatives.  相似文献

A generalised model of the life cycle of a house dust mite, which can be tailored to any particular species of domestic mite, is presented. The model takes into account the effects of hygrothermal conditions on each life cycle phase. It is used in a computer simulation program, called POPMITE, which, by incorporating a population age structure, is able to predict population dynamics. The POPMITE simulation is adapted to the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Acari: Pyroglyphidae) (DP) mite using published data on the egg development period, total development period, adult longevity, mortality during egg development, mortality during juvenile development, and fecundity of individual DP mites held at a range of constant hygrothermal conditions. An example is given which illustrates how the model functions under constant hygrothermal conditions. A preliminary validation of POPMITE is made by a comparison of the POPMITE predictions with published measurements of population growth of DP mites held at a range constant hygrothermal conditions for 21 days. The POPMITE simulation is used to provide predictions of population growth or decline for a wide range of constant relative humidity and temperature combinations for 30 and 60 days. The adaptation of the model to correctly take account of fluctuating hygrothermal conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Soil stores approximately twice as much carbon as the atmosphere and fluctuations in the size of the soil carbon pool directly influence climate conditions. We used the Nutrient Network global change experiment to examine how anthropogenic nutrient enrichment might influence grassland soil carbon storage at a global scale. In isolation, enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorous had minimal impacts on soil carbon storage. However, when these nutrients were added in combination with potassium and micronutrients, soil carbon stocks changed considerably, with an average increase of 0.04 KgCm?2 year?1 (standard deviation 0.18 KgCm?2 year?1). These effects did not correlate with changes in primary productivity, suggesting that soil carbon decomposition may have been restricted. Although nutrient enrichment caused soil carbon gains most dry, sandy regions, considerable absolute losses of soil carbon may occur in high‐latitude regions that store the majority of the world's soil carbon. These mechanistic insights into the sensitivity of grassland carbon stocks to nutrient enrichment can facilitate biochemical modelling efforts to project carbon cycling under future climate scenarios.  相似文献

Jumping is an important performance component of many sporting activities. A number of training modalities have been used to enhance jumping performance including plyometrics. The positive effects of plyometric training on jumping performance are a function of the stretch-shortening cycle phenomenon. However, there has been little research on the effects of the surface on jumping performance. This study examined the effects of performing 2 different plyometric exercises, depth jump (DJ) and counter movement jump (CMJ), on noncompliant (ground) and compliant (mini-trampoline) surfaces. Male participants (N = 20; age = 21.8 +/- 3.8 years; height = 184.6 +/- 7.6 cm; mass = 83.6 +/- 8.2 kg) randomly performed 10 CMJ and 10 DJ on compliant and noncompliant surfaces. Kinematic data were determined via 2-dimensional high-speed video. There were significant (p < 0.05) differences in DJ and CMJ joint and segment range of movement for ankle, knee, hip and trunk, indicating less crouch when the participants performed plyometric exercises on the compliant surface.  相似文献

We have created a high quality phage display library containing over 1010 human antibodies and describe its use in the generation of antibodies on an unprecedented scale. We have selected, screened and sequenced over 38,000 recombinant antibodies to 292 antigens, yielding over 7,200 unique clones. 4,400 antibodies were characterized by specificity testing and detailed sequence analysis and the data/clones are available online. Sensitive detection was demonstrated in a bead based flow cytometry assay. Furthermore, positive staining by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays was found for 37% (143/381) of antibodies. Thus, we have demonstrated the potential of and illuminated the issues associated with genome-wide monoclonal antibody generation.  相似文献

The IncP-1 plasmid mutant R68.45, which is able to mobilize the chromosomes of many Gram-negative bacteria, was shown to carry a 2.10-kb insertion sequence designated IS21. This sequence transposed to the small multicopy plasmid pED815 at a high frequency (2 × 10?3) and in two pED815::IS21 derivatives inactivated the tetracycline-resistance and replication functions, respectively. We propose that the chromosome-mobilizing ability of R68.45 is due to the formation of an R68.45-chromosome cointegrate during transposition of IS21. This would account for its high efficiency and the absence of a fixed chromosomal origin of transfer in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO, and its ability to function in a variety of bacterial hosts. R68.45 is formed from R68 by duplication of a 2.1-kb DNA segment including a distinctive cluster of seven restriction endonuclease sites. The two copies of the duplicated segment are probably contiguous and so might have arisen by a transition type of mechanism. IS21 is similar in length to the duplicated segment and includes the same set of seven cleavage sites located at similar distances from the two termini. However, the single copy of the duplicated segment in R68 transposed at an undetectably low frequency (<6 × 10?8); either the duplicated segment and IS21, although overlapping, are not identical, or they are identical but the transposition system is nonfunctional in R68. Our further investigations of R68.45 and of several independently isolated chromosome-mobilizing derivatives of R68 demonstrated that these were indistinguishable from each other and that they did not include any P. aeruginosa PAO DNA. Furthermore, we searched without success for sequences corresponding to IS21, and to the Escherichia coli K-12 insertion sequences IS1, IS2, and IS3, on the chromosomes of P. aeruginosa PAO and PAT and P. putida PPN, and on several Pseudomonas plasmids. The contribution of homology to low-frequency chromosomal mobilization by these plasmids is discussed.  相似文献

It has recently been established that memory CD8(+) T cells induced by viral infection are maintained at unexpectedly high frequencies in the spleen. While it has been established that these memory cells are phenotypically heterogeneous, relatively little is known about the functional status of these cells. Here we investigated the proliferative potential of CD8(+) memory T cells induced by Sendai virus infection. High frequencies of CD8(+) T cells specific for both dominant and subdominant Sendai virus epitopes persisted for many weeks after primary infection, and these cells were heterogeneous with respect to CD62L expression (approximately 20% CD62L(hi) and 80% CD62L(lo)). Reactivation of these cells with the antigenic peptide in vitro induced strong proliferation of antigen-specific CD8(+) T cells. However, approximately 20% of the cells failed to proliferate in vitro in response to a cognate peptide but nevertheless differentiated into effector cells and acquired full cytotoxic potential. These cells also expressed high levels of CD62L (in marked contrast to the CD62L(lo) status of the proliferating cells in the culture). Direct isolation of CD62L(hi) and CD62L(lo) CD8(+) T cells from memory mice confirmed the correlation of this marker with proliferative potential. Taken together, these data demonstrate that Sendai virus infection induces high frequencies of memory CD8(+) T cells that are highly heterogeneous in terms of both their phenotype and their proliferative potential.  相似文献
