Bird-pollinated flowers in an evolutionary and molecular context   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Evolutionary shifts to bird pollination (ornithophily) haveoccurred independently in many lineages of flowering plants.This shift affects many floral features, particularly thoseresponsible for the attraction of birds, deterrence of illegitimateflower visitors (particularly bees), protection from vigorousforaging by birds, and accurate placement of pollen on bird'sbodies. Red coloration appears to play a major role in bothbee-deterrence and bird-attraction. Other mechanisms of bird-attractioninclude the production of abundant dilute nectar and the provisionof secondary perches (for non-hovering birds). As a result ofselection for similar phenotypic traits in unrelated bird-pollinatedspecies, a floral syndrome of ornithophily can be recognized,and this review surveys the component floral traits. The strongconvergent evolution evident in bird-pollinated flowers raisesa question about the nature of the genetic mechanisms underlyingsuch transitions and whether the same gene systems are involvedin most cases. As yet there is too little information to answerthis question. However, some promising model systems have beendeveloped that include closely related bee and bird-pollinatedflowers, such as Ipomoea, Mimulus, and Lotus. Recent studiesof floral developmental genetics have identified numerous genesimportant in the development of the floral phenotype, whichare also potential candidates for involvement in shifts betweenbee-pollination and bird pollination. As more whole-genome informationbecomes available, progress should be rapid. Titanotrichum oldhamii (a monotypic genus from Taiwan, Okinawa, and adjacent regions of China) has inflorescences bearing either showy yellow flowers or asexual bulbils. Asexual reproduction by bulbils is important in natural populations, and bulbil production increases in August and September at the end of the flowering season (which runs from June to the end of September). The bulbils are small (~1-2.5 mm long) and numerous. They consist of a small portion of stem (bract-stem) topped by opposite storage bracts that enclose a minute apical meristem. A secondary root develops from the side of the bract-stem. The floral meristem of T. oldhamii has three possible fates: (1) bulbil formation, (2) flower formation, or (3) bracteose proliferation. Bracteose proliferation rarely occurs and appears to be a developmental transition between the bulbiliferous and racemose inflorescence forms. It is strongly reminiscent of the floricaula and squamosa mutants of Antirrhinum. In the bulbiliferous form a single floral primordium, which would normally produce one flower, gives rise to ~50-70 bulbils by repeated subdivision of the meristem. This form of bulbil production appears to be unique to Titanotrichum. Occasionally a floral meristem divides, but the subdivision forms multiflowered units of up to four flowers rather than bulbils, suggesting that meristem fate is reversible up to the first or second meristem subdivision. In Titanotrichum, therefore, primordium fate is apparently not determined at inception but becomes irreversibly determined shortly after the appearance of developmental characteristics of the floral or bulbil pathway.  相似文献

Cyrtandra comprises at least 600 species distributed throughout Malesia, where it is known for many local endemics and in Polynesia and Micronesia, where it is present on most island groups, and is among the most successfully dispersing genera of the Pacific. To ascertain the origin of the oceanic Pacific island species of Cyrtandra, we sequenced the internal transcribed spacers of nuclear ribosomal DNA of samples from throughout its geographical range. Because all oceanic Pacific island species form a well-supported clade, these species apparently result from a single initial colonization into the Pacific, possibly by a species from the eastern rim of SE Asia via a NW-to-SE stepping stone migration. Hawaiian species form a monophyletic group, probably as a result of a single colonization. The Pacific island clade of Cyrtandra dispersed across huge distances, in contrast to the apparent localization of the SE Asian clades. Although highly vagile, the Pacific clade is restricted to oceanic islands. Individual species are often endemic to a single island, characteristic of the "supertramp" life form sensu Diamond (1974, Science 184: 803-806). The evolution of fleshy fruit within Cyrtandra provided an adaptation for colonization throughout the oceanic Pacific via bird dispersal from a single common ancestor.  相似文献

Incarvillea is a herbaceous and temperate member of Bignoniaceae, previously divided into four subgenera, Niedzwedzkia, Amphicome, Incarvillea, and Pteroscleris. Niedzwedzkia and Amphicome have in the past been treated as independent genera. Different relationships have been proposed for the four subgenera. Here, maximum parsimony analysis using ITS and trnL-F sequences resulted in similar trees and showed that the genus is monophyletic. Analysis of the combined data resulted in a single tree with five major clades highly supported and well resolved. The relationships of the five major clades are (subgenus Niedzwedzkia (Incarvillea olgae (subgenus Amphicome (subgenus Incarvillea, subgenus Pteroscleris)))). All four subgenera are well supported for monophyly, with the exception of subgenus Incarvillea, represented here by I. sinensis and I. olgae. Incarvillea olgae is not closely related to I. sinensis, a conclusion supported by morphology. The two basal monotypic subgenera are found in Central Asia. The most species-rich subgenus, Pteroscleris, has 10 species in the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains and may have dispersed early from central Asia to eastern Asia. Short branch lengths on the molecular trees within Pteroscleris suggest a recent and rapid radiation of this rosette-forming subgenus, perhaps connected with the uplift of the Himalaya-Hengduan massif.  相似文献

Background and Aims Titanotrichum oldhamii is a monotypicgenus distributed in Taiwan, adjacent regions of China and theRyukyu Isands of Japan. Its conservation status is vulnerableas most populations are small and widely scattered. Titanotrichumhas a mixed system of reproduction with vegetative bulbils andseeds. The aim of this study was to understand the populationgenetic structure of Titanotrichum in relation to its specificreproductive behaviour and to determine possible implicationsfor conservation strategies. • Methods After an extensive inventory of most wild populationsof Titanotrichum in East Asia, samples from 25 populations withinits major distribution were carried out utilizing RAPD and inter-SSRmolecular fingerprinting analysis. • Key Results The findings support the conclusion thatmany populations reproduce predominantly asexually but thatsome genetic variation still exists within populations. However,significant amounts of variation exist between populations,perhaps reflecting population differentiation by drift. Thispartitioning of genetic diversity indicates that the level ofinter-population gene exchange is extremely low. These findingsare consistent with field observations of very limited seedproduction. The Chinese populations are similar to those ofNorthern Taiwan, while the Ryukyu populations fall within therange of variation of the north-central Taiwan populations.The Taiwanese populations are relatively variable and differentiationbetween north, east and south Taiwan is evident. • Conclusions The distribution of Titanotrichum seems tobe consistent with a former land connection between China, Taiwanand the Ryukyu Islands at a glacial maximum during the Quaternary,followed by progressive fragmentation of the populations. North-centralTaiwan is the centre of genetic diversity, possibly due to theproximity of the former land bridge between the regions, togetherwith the variety of suitable habitats in north Taiwan. The significanceof these findings for conservation is discussed.  相似文献

Phylogenetic trees based upon DNA sequence data, when calibrated with a dimension of time, allow inference of: (i) the pattern of accumulation of lineages through time; (ii) the time of origin of monophyletic groups; (iii) when lineages arrived in different geographical areas; (iv) the time of origin of biome-specific morphologies. This gives a powerful new view of the history of biomes that in many cases is not provided by the incomplete plant fossil record. Dated plant phylogenies for angiosperm families such as Leguminoaceae (Fabaceae), Melastomataceae sensu stricto, Annonaceae and Rhamnaceae indicate that long-distance, transoceanic dispersal has played an important role in shaping their distributions, and that this can obscure any effect of tectonic history, previously assumed to have been the major cause of their biogeographic patterns. Dispersal from other continents has also been important in the assembly of the Amazonian rainforest flora and the Australian flora. Comparison of dated biogeographic patterns of plants and animals suggests that recent long-distance dispersal might be more prevalent in plants, which has major implications for community assembly and coevolution. Dated plant phylogenies also reveal the role of past environmental changes on the evolution of lineages in species-rich biomes, and show that recent Plio-Pleistocene diversification has contributed substantially to their current species richness. Because of the critical role of fossils and morphological characters in assigning ages to nodes in phylogenetic trees, future studies must include careful morphological consideration of fossils and their extant relatives in a phylogenetic context. Ideal study systems will be based upon DNA sequence data from multiple loci and multiple fossil calibrations. This allows cross-validation both of age estimates from different loci, and from different fossil calibrations. For a more complete view of biome history, future studies should emphasize full taxon sampling in ecologically important groups, and should focus on geographical areas for which few species-level phylogenies are available, such as tropical Africa and Asia. These studies are urgent because understanding the history of biomes can both inform conservation decisions, and help predict the effects of future environmental changes at a time when biodiversity is being impacted on an unprecedented scale.  相似文献

An increasing number of plant-insect studies using phylogenetic analysis suggest that cospeciation events are rare in plant-insect systems. Instead, nonrandom patterns of phylogenetic congruence are produced by phylogenetically conserved host switching (to related plants) or tracking of particular resources or traits (e.g., chemical). The dominance of host switching in many phytophagous insect groups may make the detection of genuine cospeciation events difficult. One important test of putative cospeciation events is to verify whether reciprocal speciation is temporally plausible. We explored techniques for double-dating of both plant and insect phylogenies. We use dated molecular phylogenies of a psyllid (Hemiptera)-Genisteae (Fabaceae) system, a predominantly monophagous insect-plant association widespread on the Atlantic Macaronesian islands. Phylogenetic reconciliation analysis suggests high levels of parallel cladogenesis between legumes and psyllids. However, dating using molecular clocks calibrated on known geological ages of the Macaronesian islands revealed that the legume and psyllid radiations were not contemporaneous but sequential. Whereas the main plant radiation occurred some 8 million years ago, the insect radiation occurred about 3 million years ago. We estimated that >60% of the psyllid speciation has resulted from host switching between related hosts. The only evidence for true cospeciation is in the much more recent and localized radiation of genistoid legumes in the Canary Islands, where the psyllid and legume radiations have been partially contemporaneous. The identification of specific cospeciation events over this time period, however, is hindered by the phylogenetic uncertainty in both legume and psyllid phylogenies due to the apparent rapidity of the species radiations.  相似文献

Carbonic anhydrases fall into three distinct evolutionary and structural classes: alpha, beta, and gamma. The beta-class carbonic anhydrases (beta-CAs) are widely distributed among higher plants, simple eukaryotes, eubacteria, and archaea. We have determined the crystal structure of ECCA, a beta-CA from Escherichia coli, to a resolution of 2.0 A. In agreement with the structure of the beta-CA from the chloroplast of the red alga Porphyridium purpureum, the active-site zinc in ECCA is tetrahedrally coordinated by the side chains of four conserved residues. These results confirm the observation of a unique pattern of zinc ligation in at least some beta-CAS: The absence of a water molecule in the inner coordination sphere is inconsistent with known mechanisms of CA activity. ECCA activity is highly pH-dependent in the physiological range, and its expression in yeast complements an oxygen-sensitive phenotype displayed by a beta-CA-deletion strain. The structural and biochemical characterizations of ECCA presented here and the comparisons with other beta-CA structures suggest that ECCA can adopt two distinct conformations displaying widely divergent catalytic rates.  相似文献
