Multiple paternity (MP) has been demonstrated in a variety of sharks, although its prevalence and the number of sires per litter vary considerably among species. To date, such analyses have focused on viviparous species that possess only part of the wide spectrum of reproductive strategies developed in elasmobranchs. We analyzed MP in an oviparous species, the small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula). In total, 150 neonates originating from 13 different mothers were genotyped using 12 microsatellite loci. MP was commonplace, with progeny from 92% of females sired by multiple males. This result is consistent with the reproductive biology of the species, particularly its protracted breeding season and potential for long-term sperm storage. The significance of these findings is discussed in light of small-spotted catshark behavior, which suggests that the cost of avoiding mating attempts initiated by males may be high and is therefore supportive of convenience polyandry as an explanation for MP. Eggs were followed from the time they were laid to when they hatched, offering a rare opportunity to investigate juvenile development in more detail.  相似文献

Dendritic cells (DC) in the gut promote immune tolerance by expressing retinal dehydrogenase (RALDH), an enzyme that promotes retinoic acid, which aids differentiation of Foxp3(+) inducible regulatory T cells (iTreg) in the intestinal mucosa. How RALDH expression is regulated is unclear. We found that 4-1BB (CD137), a member of the TNFR family, together with CD103, marked mesenteric lymph node DC with the highest level of RALDH activity, and ligation of 4-1BB maintained RALDH expression in these gut DC. Moreover, 4-1BB signals synergized with those through TLR2 or GM-CSFR to promote RALDH activity in undifferentiated DC. Correspondingly, 4-1BB-deficient mice were impaired in their ability to generate iTreg in the GALT when exposed to oral Ag, and 4-1BB-deficient mesenteric lymph node DC displayed weak RALDH activity and were poor at promoting iTreg development. Thus, our data demonstrate a novel activity of 4-1BB in controlling RALDH expression and the regulatory activity of DC.  相似文献

Few methods for assessing total antioxidant capacity (TAC) include both the percentage of inhibition and the length of inhibition in the measurement. Available methods require above ambient constant temperature incubation, reaction preheating, and/or separate assays for testing hydrophilic and hydrophobic samples. We describe a high-throughput method, antioxidant inhibition of oxygen radicals (AIOR), that overcomes these difficulties. AIOR uses peroxyl radicals to trigger a decrease in fluorescence of the indicator molecule, uroporphyrin I, which is delayed by the presence of antioxidants. The area under the curve is measured by a fluorescence spectrophotometer in a 96-well microplate format, and TAC results are expressed as millimole/liter Trolox equivalents. AIOR is performed at ambient temperature and is applicable to samples in either aqueous or common organic solvents. The reaction between uroporphyrin I and the peroxyl radicals generated from 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) was found to be of first-order kinetics with a mean rate constant (k) of 0.0254. Applications to measure antioxidant capacity are demonstrated on individual chemicals and biological samples. The method has good linearity, within- and between-assay precision, and recovery.  相似文献

We provide the first faunal report for the early/middle Miocene fauna of Cerdas, Bolivia (16.5–15.3 Ma; 20° 52′ S, 66° 19′ W), based primarily on new specimens collected in 2007. As many as twelve species of mammals in nine families are represented. Notoungulates include Palyeidodon obtusum (Toxodontidae), Protypotherium cf. attenuatum and Protypotherium sp. nov. (Interatheriidae), ‘Plesiotypotherium’ minus and possibly Microtypotherium choquecotense (Mesotheriidae), and Hegetotherium? sp. nov. (Hegetotheriidae). Xenarthrans include Stenotatus planus and Prozaedyus sp. (Cingulata: Dasypodidae), Peltephilidae gen. et sp. nov. (Cingulata), and Xyophorus cf. bondesioi (Pilosa: Nothrotheriidae). A new species of litoptern is also present (Macraucheniidae) as well as an unidentified rodent (Chinchillidae: Lagostominae). Two of these Cerdas species occur in Friasian sensu stricto/Colloncuran SALMA faunas of Patagonia, and perhaps one in Santacrucian SALMA faunas. Among middle latitude localities, Cerdas resembles Chucal, Chile (late early Miocene, Santacrucian SALMA) in community composition (e.g., abundant mesotheriids, few rodent species), but has no species in common; it shares one species with Quebrada Honda, Bolivia (middle Miocene, Laventan SALMA), and perhaps as many as three more. These observations indicate that Cerdas is not referable to the Santacrucian, and that the upper limit of this SALMA in the middle latitudes falls somewhere between 17.5 Ma (the top of Chucal) and 16.5 Ma (the base of Cerdas). Based on the range of dates proposed for the youngest Santacrucian intervals in Patagonia, a diachronous offset of up to 2.1 Ma may exist at this point in the SALMA sequence between middle and high latitude faunas.  相似文献

Many fish species exhibit size‐assortative shoaling, which is often thought to be driven by predation risk. Recent fieldwork has revealed that guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are more size assorted in high‐predation populations than in low‐predation ones. However, size assortment does nonetheless occur in some low‐predation populations, suggesting that predation is unlikely the sole driving force behind size‐assortment. Here, we investigated in the laboratory the potential role of active choice in size‐assortative shoaling in wild‐caught female guppies originating from two populations of the same river system in Trinidad. Small or large focal females from each population were offered a binary choice of shoaling with either four small female conspecifics or four large ones. Observed shoaling preferences depended on the body size of the focal fish, suggesting phenotype‐mediated conflict over group composition. Large focal fish preferred to shoal with the size‐matched stimulus shoal of large fish. In contrast, small focal fish did not shoal assortatively but also preferred to shoal with larger females. Our results suggest that size‐assortative shoaling in female guppies is likely to be due to factors other than active choice, such as habitat segregation and sexual harassment.  相似文献

This is the first of two articles addressing the most appropriate crossover frequency at which incident power flux density (Sinc) replaces the spatial peak value of the specific energy absorption rate (SAR) averaged over 1 or 10 g (i.e., peak 1 or 10 g SAR) as the basic restriction for protecting against radiofrequency (RF) heating effects in the 1–10 GHz range. Our general approach has been to compare the degree of correlation between these basic restrictions and the peak induced tissue temperature rise (ΔT) for a representative range of population/exposure scenarios. In this article we particularly address the effect of human population diversity in the thickness of body tissue layers at eight different sites of the body. We used a Monte Carlo approach to specify 32000 models (400 models for each of 8 body sites for 10 frequencies) which were representative of tissue thicknesses for age (18–74 years) and sex at the eight body sites. Histogram distributions of Sinc and peak 1 and 10 g SAR corresponding to a peak 1 °C temperature rise were obtained from RF and thermal analyses of 1D multiplanar models exposed to a normally incident plane wave ranging from 1 to 10 GHz in thermo‐neutral environmental conditions. Examination of the distribution spread of the histograms indicated that peak SAR was a better predictor of peak tissue temperature rise across the entire 1–10 GHz frequency range than Sinc, as indicated by the smaller spread in its histogram distributions, and that peak 10 g SAR was a slightly better predictor than peak 1 g SAR. However, this result must be weighed against partly conflicting indications from complex body modeling in the second article of this series, which incorporates near‐field effects and the influence of complex body geometries.
