Two chemokine receptor CX3CR1 gene variants, V249I and T280M, have been implicated in coronary artery diseases (CAD). Currently no consistent effect has been revealed and their role in cardiovascular disease is still conflicting. In the present study the association of CX3CR1 genotypes with CAD and myocardial infarction (MI) was investigated in the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health (LURIC) cohort, including 3316 individuals in whom cardiovascular disease angiographically has been defined or ruled out. Similarly to previous studies, the alleles I249 and M280 were in strong linkage disequilibrium and formed an I249M280 haplotype. However, there was no relationship between CX3CR1 genotypes or corresponding haplotypes and the prevalence of CAD or MI. Adjusted for classical risk factors (age, sex, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and smoking), the odds ratio (OR) of V249I for CAD was 0.95 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.78–1.15, p = 0.61). The OR of T280M for CAD was 0.83 (95% CI = 0.66–1.04, p = 0.11). Furthermore, CX3CR1 variants were not associated with C-reactive protein levels, age at onset of CAD, severity of CAD and MI. In conclusion, present data of LURIC do not support the hypothesis that common variants of the CX3CR1 gene are associated with the presence of CAD or MI. 相似文献

? Premise of the study: Flower heating is known from a few species in 11 of the c. 450 families of flowering plants. Flowers in these families produce heat metabolically and are adapted to beetles or flies as pollinators. Here, we focus on the Schisandraceae, an American/Asian plant family known to exhibit flower heating in some species, but not others, raising the question of the adaptive function of heat production. ? Methods: We used field observations, experiments, and ancestral trait reconstruction on a molecular phylogeny for Schisandraceae that includes the investigated species. ? Key results: At least two Chinese species of Illicium are exclusively pollinated by gall midges that use the flowers as brood sites (not for pollen feeding). Continuous monitoring of flower temperatures revealed that the highest temperatures were attained after the flowers' sexual functions were over, and experiments showed that post-anthetic warming benefited larval development, not fruit development. Midge larvae in flowers with trimmed tepals (and hence a lower temperature) died, but fruit set ratios remained unchanged. Based on the DNA phylogeny, gall midge pollination evolved from general fly/beetle pollination several times in Schisandraceae, with some species adapted to flower-breeding midges, others to pollen-feeding midges. ? Conclusions: Flower heating may be an ancestral trait in Schisandraceae that became co-opted in species pollinated by flower-breeding midges requiring long-persistent warm chambers for larval development. 相似文献

One of these is the Apodanthaceae, a clade of c. 19 holoparasitic species in two or three genera occurring in North and South America, Africa, the Near East, and Australia. Cardiovascular diseases are accompanied by changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM) including the re-expression of fibronectin and tenascin-C splicing variants. Using human recombinant small immunoprotein (SIP) format antibodies, a molecular targeting of these proteins is of therapeutic interest. Tissue samples of the right atrial auricle from patients with coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease were analysed by PCR based ECM gene expression profiling. Moreover, the re-expression of fibronectin and tenascin-C splicing variants was investigated by immunofluoerescence labelling. We demonstrated changes in ECM gene expression depending on histological damage or underlying cardiac disease. An increased expression of fibronectin and tenascin-C mRNA in association to histological damage and in valvular heart disease compared to coronary artery disease could be shown. There was a distinct re-expression of ED-A containing fibronectin and A1 domain containing tenascin-C detectable with human recombinant SIP format antibodies in diseased myocardium. ED-A containing fibronectin showed a clear vessel positivity. For A1 domain containing tenascin-C, there was a particular positivity in areas of interstitial and perivascular fibrosis. Right atrial myocardial tissue is a valuable model to investigate cardiac ECM remodelling. Human recombinant SIP format antibodies usable for an antibody-mediated targeted delivery of drugs might offer completely new therapeutic options in cardiac diseases. 相似文献

Hoya (Marsdenieae, Apocynaceae) includes at least 200 species distributed from India to the Pacific Islands. We here infer major species groups in the genus based on combined sequences from the chloroplast atpB-rbcL spacer, the trnL region, and nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS region for 42 taxa of Hoya and close relatives. To assess levels of ITS polymorphism, ITS sequences for a third of the accessions were obtained by cloning. Most ITS clones grouped by species, indicating that speciation in Hoya usually predates ITS duplication. One ITS sequence of H. carnosa, however, grouped with a sequence of the morphologically similar H. pubicalyx, pointing to recent hybridization or the persistence of paralogous copies through a speciation event. The topology resulting from the combined chloroplast and nuclear data recovers some morphology-based sections, such as Acanthostemma and Eriostemma, as well as a well-supported Australian/New Guinean clade. The combined data also suggest that morphological adaptations for ant-symbiosis evolved at least three times within Hoya. 相似文献

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) in most zoos attracts high levels of public attention and can play an important role in conservation education. Polar bears in the wild are typically solitary; bears in captivity often house socially. This study reported behavioral evidence on how bears manage this situation and whether proximity leads to aggression. The study recorded location and behavior once per minute for 106 hr for 2 female polar bears at the Philadelphia Zoo; the samples represented all times of day bears spent in the enclosure (off-exhibit time spent in separate, indoor dens). When changing locations, 1 bear more frequently moved away from the other, effecting a net increase in interindividual distance. When either bear moved into an adjacent zone, 1 typically moved away. The bears occupied the same enclosure zone for a low proportion of time; proximity did not routinely lead to overt aggression. These data indicate polar bears make behavioral decisions, minimizing aggression, to manage social distance and that enclosure designers for solitary species—to facilitate social avoidance—should consider using topographical complexity and multiple pathways throughout. 相似文献

The evolution of Arisaema is reconstructed, based on combined sequences (2048 aligned bases) from the chloroplast trnL intron, trnL-trnF spacer, and rpl20-rps12 spacer obtained for species from all 11 sections, including sectional type species and geographically disjunct East African and North American/Mexican species. Analyses were rooted with a representative sample of the closest outgroups, Pinellia and Typhonium, to rigorously test the monophyly of Arisaema. Sections in Arisaema are mostly based on leaf, stem, and inflorescence characters and, with one exception, are not rejected by the molecular data; however, statistical support for sectional relationships in the genus remains poor. Section Tortuosa, which includes eastern North American A. dracontium and Mexican A. macrospathum, is demonstrably polyphyletic. The third New World species, A. triphyllum, also occurs in eastern North America and groups with a different Asian clade than do A. dracontium/A. macrospathum. The genus thus appears to have entered North America twice. Fossil infructescences similar to those of A. triphyllum are known from approximately 18 million-year-old deposits in Washington State and can serve to calibrate a molecular clock. Constraining the age of A. triphyllum to 18 million years (my) and applying either a semiparametric or an ultrametric clock model to the combined data yields an age of approximately 31-49 my for the divergence of A. dracontium/A. macrospathum from their Asian relatives and of 19-32 my for the divergence between African A. schimperianum and a Tibetan/Nepalese relative. The genus thus provides an example of the Oligocene/Miocene floristic links between East Africa, Arabia, the Himalayan region, China, and North America. The phylogeny also suggests secondary loss of the environmental sex determination strategy that characterizes all arisaemas except for two subspecies of A. flavum, which have consistently bisexual spathes. These subspecies are tetraploid and capable of selfing, while a third subspecies of A. flavum is diploid and retains the sex-changing strategy. In the molecular trees, the sex-changing subspecies is sister to the two non-sex-changing ones, and the entire species is not basal in the genus. 相似文献
