The aim of this study was to evaluate activity–time budget, habitat use and how seasonality and group size influence the expression of greater rhea behaviours. Greater rheas are threatened South American birds; habitat loss, predation and hunting are the main factors responsible for population declines. The study was conducted in farmlands within a matrix of commercial Eucalyptus plantation and remnants of natural habitats of cerrado vegetation (savannah-like) in southeastern Brazil. Rhea groups were located visually in different habitats visited monthly from January 2004 to December 2005. Time spent searching greater rheas in each habitat was equally distributed. Data were collected using scan sampling with instantaneous recording of behaviours every minute. The time–activity budget of greater rheas was influenced by habitat structure, time of the day, season and group size. Rheas spent more time in open areas than in forested areas (p < 0.001). Vigilance behaviours were more displayed in forested areas, in the dry season and by solitary and small groups of birds. Resting behaviours occurred more often in open lands and within groups with more than three rheas. Food availability, good visibility and low human presence are the possible factors for the preference of greater rheas for pasturelands. The results support the resource availability hypothesis, where it is expected that habitats with a higher food availability will be more used by the animals, group size hypothesis, where the scarcity of resources will lead to smaller groups of animals and that forestry modifies greater rheas habitat use and behaviours.  相似文献

The two possible mechanisms of proton transfer on the catalytic process of serine proteases (single or double proton transfer) have been analysed. Intermediate neglect of differential overlap calculations have been performed in the absence and in the presence of the substrate molecule and one water molecule localized in the active site. It is shown that, in the absence of the substrate and water, double proton transfer seems to be the most feasible mechanism. However, when these molecules are introduced in the calculation, the role played by them is to facilitate the formation of the zwitterionic structure (single proton transfer) and to destabilize the intermediate structure which leads to double proton transfer. The present study is concerned with the influence of processes occurring during dialysis on the antioxidant capacity of plasma and saliva. The biological fluids were also tested for uric acid and total protein content. Before hemodialysis, plasma antioxidant status of hemodialyzed patients appears slightly higher than the corresponding status in normal subjects; after hemodialysis it is found unchanged. The result can be explained by a balance between a reduction in uric acid plasma content, due to the dialytic procedure, and an increase in protein content, possibly due to a dialysis-related hemoconcentration. Moreover, pre-dialysis total antioxidant capacity of whole saliva samples is higher than in healthy individuals and drastically decreases towards normal values following dialytic procedure. Our data indicate a certain concentration of the uric acid in the saliva of hemodialyzed patients and evidence that both total protein concentration and uric acid level show a good correlation with saliva total antioxidant capacity, suggesting that proteins are major antioxidants of this fluid. Further observations are needed to assess whether this improved saliva antioxidant ability has any consequence on the periodontal conditions of hemodialyzed subjects.  相似文献

Listroscelidinae (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) are insectivorous Pantropical katydids whose taxonomy presents a long history of controversy, with several genera incertae sedis. This work focused on species occurring in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, one of the world''s most threatened biomes. We examined material deposited in scientific collections and visited 15 conservation units from Rio de Janeiro to southern Bahia between November 2011 and January 2012, catching 104 specimens from 10 conservation units. Based on morphological and molecular data we redefined Listroscelidini, adding a new tribe, new genus and eight new species to the subfamily. Using morphological analysis, we redescribed and added new geographic records for six species, synonymized two species and built a provisional identification key for the Atlantic Forest Listroscelidinae. Molecular results suggest two new species and a new genus to be described, possibly by the fission of the genus Hamayulus. We also proposed a 500 bp region in the final portion of the COI to be used as a molecular barcode. Our data suggest that the Atlantic Forest Listroscelidinae are seriously endangered, because they occur in highly preserved forest remnants, show high rates of endemism and have a narrow geographic distribution. Based on our results, we suggest future collection efforts must take into account the molecular barcode data to accelerate species recognition.  相似文献

Changes in the intracellular concentrations of Na+ and K+ of fetal human fibroblasts have been followed after replacement of serum-containing growth media with unsupplemented and serum-supplemented saline solution (Earle's balanced salt solution). Incubation in unsupplemented salt solution was followed by a progressive increase of the internal Na+ counterbalanced by a decrease of internal K+, without major alterations of the internal osmolarity. After 3 h incubation the intracellular Na+ and K+ concentrations were 120 mM and 50 mM, respectively. These intracellular ion derangements were not associated with a failure of the (Na+ + K+)-ATPase pump, whose activity actually increased with enhanced intracellular Na+ concentration. Ion changes did not take place when serum (in excess of 0.5%, final concentration) was present in the saline solution and a complete restoration to normal of the Na+ and K+ gradients occurred upon addition of serum to cells previously incubated in plain saline solution. The effects of serum were mimicked by furosemide, thus suggesting that channels sensitive to this diuretic are involved in the movement of Na+ and K+ following fibroblast incubation in unsupplemented saline solution.  相似文献

Using a combination of ultraviolet-visible absorption, 1H NMR and ESR techniques we have established that N(1) of the imidazole and N(1) of the pyrimidine residues of bleomycin A2 bind to Cu(II) and Zn(II). The observations coupled with the earlier results that the alpha-amino group of the alpha-amino carboxamide function and the carbamoyl moiety are also Cu(II)-ligating groups makes it possible to reconstruct the detailed geometry and stereochemistry of the metal binding site of bleomycin A2.  相似文献

DW/J dwarf mice lack acidophilic anterior pituitary cells and are deficient in growth hormone and other neuroendocrine mediators. These mice were examined to determine the effects of these deficiencies on hematopoietic and immune system development. Previous studies have suggested that these mice had immunologic defects primarily involving T cell development. However, we have found that these mice exhibit decreased peripheral blood cell counts affecting all lineages (erythrocytic, leukocytic, and platelets). Examination of lymphoid tissues of dwarf mice indicated that their spleens were hypoplastic. Treatment of these mice with recombinant human growth hormone resulted in a significant improvement of peripheral blood counts and spleen cell number. Analysis of the bone marrow indicated a profound deficiency of B cell progenitors in the dwarf mice. However, in untreated dwarf mice, mature B cells and T cells were observed in the spleens. Although treatment with recombinant human growth hormone could correct the hematopoietic deficiencies in these mice, it did not restore the B cell progenitor populations, suggesting that an absence of growth hormone is not solely responsible for this deficiency. Thus, these mice display significant myeloid and lymphoid deficiencies that have been previously undetected.  相似文献
