Shiftwork is often associated with metabolic diseases, and in the past few years, several cytokines have been postulated to contribute to various diseases, including insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in samples of young adult men exposed to a fixed (i) night shift (n = 9), working from 22:00 to 06:00 h; (ii) early morning shift (n = 6), working from 06:00 to 14:00 h; and (iii) day shift (n = 7), working from 08:00 to 17:00 h. The fixed night-shift and early-morning-shift samples were considered collectively as a shiftworker group given their work times. Blood samples were collected during the regular working day at 4-h intervals over the course of 24 h, thus totaling six samples. Morphological and physical activity parameters did not differ between the three groups. Total energy intake was lowest on the early morning shifts (p .03). Both shiftworker groups ingested a significantly higher percentage of fat (p .003) and a lower percentage of carbohydrate (p .0005) than the day group. The early morning group had a lower mean 24-h level of adiponectin than the other two groups (p =?.016), and both the early morning and night groups exhibited higher mean 24-h levels of TNF-α than the day group (p =?.0001). The 24-h mean levels of IL-6 did not differ significantly between the groups (p =?.147). None of the groups exhibited a significant circadian effect on adiponectin (p =?.829), TNF-α (p =?.779), or IL-6 (p =?.979) levels. Major microorganisms in biofilms on external surfaces of historic buildings are algae, cyanobacteria, bacteria, and fungi.
Their growth causes discoloration and degradation. We compared the phototrophs on cement-based renderings and limestone substrates
at 14 historic locations (47 sites sampled) in Europe and Latin America. Most biofilms contained both cyanobacteria and algae.
Single-celled and colonial cyanobacteria frequently constituted the major phototroph biomass on limestone monuments (32 sites
sampled). Greater numbers of phototrophs, and especially of algae and of filamentous morphotypes, were found on cement-based
renderings (15 sites), probably owing to the porosity and small pore size of the latter substrates, allowing greater entry
and retention of water. All phototrophic groups were more frequent on Latin American than on European buildings (20 and 27
sites, respectively), with cyanobacteria and filamentous phototrophs showing the greatest differences. The results confirm
the influence of both climate and substrate on phototroph colonization of historic buildings.

The demonstration that interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a lectin specific for
oligomannosides allows to understand a new function for this cytokine: as a
bifunctional molecule when bound to its receptor ss, IL-2 associates the
latter which the CD3/TCR complex, interacting with oligosaccharides of CD3
through its carbohydrate-recognition domain (Zanetta et al. , 1996,
Biochem. J., 318, 49-53). This induces the tyrosine phosphorylation of the
IL-2R beta by ++p56(lck) , the first step of the IL-2-dependent signaling.
Since this specific association is disrupted in vitro by oligomannosides
with five and six mannose residues, we made the hypothesis that pathogenic
cells or microorganisms could bind IL-2, consequently disturbing the IL-2-
dependent response. This study shows that the pathogenic yeast Candida
albicans (in contrast with nonpathogenic yeasts) binds high amounts of IL-2
as did cancer cells. In contrast with cancer cells, yeasts do not bind the
Man6GlcNAc2-specific lectin CSL, an endogenous "amplifier of activation
signals" (Zanetta et al. , 1995, Biochem. J., 311, 629-636).

Insulin in the presence of high concentrations of glucose has a beneficial trophic effect on the development of primary cultures of hepatocytes. Compared to the situation observed in hormone-free control cultures, the flattening of the reaggregated hepatocytes is enhanced, and the reconstituted cell trabeculae are enlarged and tend to form a confluent monolayer after 3 days; the survival time is prolonged from 3 to 5 or 6 days. Ultrastructural modifications are also initiated by insulin; numerous glycogen particles appear after 24 h, in between the cisternae of the proliferated smooth endoplasmic reticulum. After 48 h, large amounts of glycogen are stored, and numerous polysomes are present. A small number of cells showed an increased synthesis of lipid droplets in the lumen of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and form liposomes at the same time. After 72 h, cytolysomes filled with glycogen develop, simulating glycogenosis type II. Simultaneously, microtubules and microfilaments, closely related to numerous polysomes, appear in cytoplasmic extensions constituting undulating membranes. The biochemical data demonstrate that, in the absence of insulin, a high concentration of glucose stimulates glycogenesis and hinders glycogenolysis. This effect of glucose on polysaccharide synthesis is progressively lost. The addition of insulin to the culture induces after 48 and 72 h, a three- to fivefold increase of the glucose incorporation into glycogen, as compared to the controls. The presence of insulin is required to maintain the hepatocyte's capacity to store glycogen. Glycogen synthetase is converted into its active form under the influence of glucose. In spite of the increasing application of DNA fingerprinting to natural
populations and to the genetic identification of humans, explicit methods
for estimation of basic population genetic parameters from DNA
fingerprinting data have not been developed. Contributing to this omission
is the inability to determine, for multilocus fingerprinting probes,
relatively important genetic information, such as the number of loci, the
number of alleles, and the distribution of these alleles into specific
loci. One of the most useful genetic parameters that could be derived from
such data would be the average heterozygosity, which has traditionally been
employed to measure the level of genetic variation within populations and
to compare genetic variation among different loci. We derive here explicit
formulas for both the estimation of average heterozygosity at multiple
hypervariable loci and a maximum value for this estimate. These estimates
are based upon the DNA restriction-pattern matrices that are typical for
fingerprinting studies of humans and natural populations. For several
empirical data sets from our laboratory, estimates of average and maximal
heterozygosity are shown to be relatively close to each other. Furthermore,
variances of these statistics based on simulation studies are relatively
small. These observations, as well as consideration of the effect of
missing alleles and alternate numbers of loci, suggest that the average
heterozygosity can be accurately estimated using phenotypic DNA fingerprint
patterns, because this parameter is relatively insensitive to the lack of
certain genetic information.

Application of neutrons to cancer treatment has been a subject of considerable clinical and research interest since the discovery of the neutron by Chadwick in 1932 (3). Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a technique of radiation oncology which is used in treating brain cancer (glioblastoma multiform) or melanoma and that consists of preferentially loading a compound containing 10B into the tumor location, followed by the irradiation of the patient with a beam of neutron. Dose distribution for BNCT is mainly based on Monte Carlo simulations. In this work, the absorbed dose spatial distribution resultant from an idealized neutron beam incident upon ahead phantom is investigated using the Monte Carlo N-particles code, MCNP 4B. The phantom model used is based on the geometry of a circular cylinder on which sits an elliptical cylinder capped by half an ellipsoid representing the neck and head, both filled with tissue-equivalent material. The neutron flux and the contribution of individual absorbed dose components, as a function of depths and of radial distance from the beam axis (dose profiles) in phantom model, is presented and discussed. For the studied beam the maximum thermal neutron flux is at a depth of 2 cm and the maximum gamma dose at a depth of 4 cm. 相似文献
