The objective of this study was to determine the environmental factors that best explain the distribution and community composition of benthic diatoms in undisturbed mountain streams in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Benthic diatoms were sampled during the dry season from 21 sampling sites established along altitudinal gradient of the study rivers. A total of 119 diatom species belonging to 38 genera and twelve families were recorded for all the 21 sites sampled. No significant differences were observed in species diversity and equitability amongst the three river systems. However, species richness, diversity and equitability decreased significantly along the longitudinal gradient of the rivers, with the highest richness, diversity and evenness being recorded in the upper reaches. Temperature, velocity, NO3? and Ca2+ levels were strongly associated with changes in diatom communities in the three rivers. Inventory of diatom communities has applications in many fields of biological research including conservation and biological monitoring of ecosystem changes.  相似文献

The study assessed the composition and abundance of insect assemblages associated with two submerged macrophytes, Lagarosiphon ilicifolius and Vallisneria aethiopica, in fishless ponds. Six ponds were used, with each plant occurring singly in two ponds, whilst the remainder had both plants. The insects were sampled using a 500-μm mesh. The number of insect taxa, diversity and total abundance on Lagarosiphon were greater than on Vallisneria when the plants occurred in separate ponds. In ponds comprising both plants, the total insect abundance on Lagarosiphon was greater than on Vallisneria. In all ponds, anisopteran naiads were dominant. Hemicordulia, Diplacodes and Trithemis made up 36.2, 27.1 and 15.2%, respectively, of the total number of insects on Lagarosiphon in single plant ponds. Trithemis was the only odonate in ponds comprised exclusively of Vallisneria and made up 68.7% of insects. In ponds that were cultured with both plants, four anisopteran taxa, Hemicordulia, Diplacodes, Trithemis and Tramea, were collected. In single plant ponds, the body-size class distribution of naiads on Lagarosiphon was characterised by a broader range, with significantly greater numbers of smaller and larger size classes than on Vallisneria (Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, P < 0.05). The study shows that in fishless waters, epiphytic insect assemblages may differ between the two plant species, especially when they are widely separated in space, probably due to greater predator–prey interactions on Vallisneria than on Lagarosiphon. The two plants may also differentially affect water physicochemical conditions, which may possibly influence insect ovipositing behaviour, and so affect insect community assemblage.  相似文献

Macroinvertebrates were sampled from 15 sites along a dry-land river in northwestern Zimbabwe to assess biotic responses to land use changes along the course of the river. The headwater sites were protected by a riparian corridor of native forest, but this was replaced by intensive subsistence agriculture in the mid-reaches while the lower reaches were located within a protected wildlife area with diverse and wide riparian forests. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that intensive agricultural activities within the mid-reaches caused severe degradation of the stream physical habitat through increased fine sediment deposition. This coincided with a significant decline in macroinvertebrate richness, diversity, and abundance at the agriculturally impacted mid-reach sites. The presence of wide riparian zones at the lower river sites resulted in significant improvements in stream physical habitat quality, and this was paralleled by significant recovery or reappearance of taxa that had disappeared from the mid-reaches. We suggest that restoration of the riparian vegetation within the mid-reaches of the Nyaodza River would lead to improved physical habitat and biotic health of this dry-land river.  相似文献

Cellulases produced by two Bacillus strains, CH43 and HR68, isolated from hot springs in Zimbabwe, were purified to homogeneity from culture supernatants. Both enzymes had molecular mass of 40 kDa and isoelectric point of 5.4. The enzymes also resembled each other in N-terminal amino acid sequence which was Ala-Gly-Thr-Lys-Thr-Pro-Val-Ala-Lys-Asn-Gly-Gln, showing 100% homology with that of endoglucanases from Bacillus subtilis belonging to glycoside hydrolase family five. The cellulases were optimally active in the pH range of 5-6.5. The optimum temperature was 65 and 70 degrees C for the endoglucanase of CH43 and HR68, respectively. The CH43 enzyme was stable at 50 degrees C in a pH range of 6-10, and HR68 at pH 6-8. Both the enzymes retained complete activity for at least 24 h at 50 degrees C. The enzymes showed highest activity with beta-glucan as substrate followed by carboxymethylcellulose. Significant activity was also observed with crystalline forms of cellulose such as filter paper and Avicel, particularly for HR68 cellulase. For carboxymethycellulose, the CH43 and HR68 cellulases had a Km of 1.5 and 1.7 mg ml(-1), respectively, and Vmax of 0.93 and 1.70 mmol glucose min(-1) mg protein(-1) respectively. The activity of the enzymes was not influenced by most metal ions at 1 mM concentration, but was increased by about 38% by Co2+. The inhibition by Hg2+ and Mn2+ was higher for CH43 than for HR68 enzyme. Ag+ inhibited the CH43 activity but stimulated the HR68 activity. The CH43 cellulase was inhibited by N-bromosuccinimide and iodoacetamide while HR68 was unaffected.  相似文献

Both the wild type and an isogenic hydrogenase-negative mutant of Azorhizobium caulinodans growing ex planta on N2 as the N source were studied in succinate-limited steady-state chemostat cultures under 0.2 to 3.0% dissolved O2 tension. Production or consumption of O2, H2, and CO2 was measured with an on-line-connected mass spectrometer. In the range of 0.2 to 3.0%, growth of both the wild type and the mutant was equally dependent on the dissolved O2 tension: the growth yield decreased, and the specific O2 consumption and CO2 production increased. A similar dependency on the dissolved O2 tension was found for the mutant with 2.5% H2 in the influent gas. The H2/N2 ratio (moles of H2 evolved per mole of N2 consumed via nitrogenase) of the mutant, growing with or without 2.5% H2, increased with increasing dissolved O2 tensions. This increase in the H2/N2 ratio was small but significant. The dependencies of the ATP/N2 ratio (moles of ATP consumed per mole of N2 fixed) and the ATP/2e- ratio [moles of ATP consumed per mole of electron pairs transferred from NAD(P)H to nitrogenase] on the dissolved O2 tension were estimated. These dependencies were interpreted in terms of the physiological concepts of respiratory protection and autoprotection.  相似文献

Many rivers in southern Africa are increasingly threatened by accelerating geomorphological degradation due to unsustainable agricultural practices and deforestation. Thus, there is a critical need for biological indicators of morphological degradation in running waters. This study analysed the composition and abundance of Trichoptera taxa from 32 sites from rivers in eastern and northwestern Zimbabwe in relation to geomorphological and land use parameters. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Spearman’s rank correlation analysis revealed that species in the genera Anisocentropus, Dyschimus, Lepidostoma, Leptocerina, Athripsodes, Parasetodes, Aethaloptera, Hydropsyche and Polymorphanisus were restricted to undisturbed forested sites, suggesting that these Trichoptera taxa may be used as indicators of structural degradation in watercourses. A species in the genus Hydroptila was the only Trichoptera taxon that showed a statistically significant numerical abundance at disturbed agricultural sites. Handling editor: D. Dudgeon  相似文献
