Of 17 species of free-living amoebae identified in various samples of salt water, only 1, Acanthamoeba polyphaga, is known to be a potential pathogen. While no deaths occurred when laboratory animals were inoculated with A. polyphaga to test for pathogenicity, the protozoa were present in the brain, liver and lungs of some but not all of the animals. 相似文献

Along-shore currents can propagate harmful algal blooms (HABs) over long distances in many coastal areas of the ocean. Harmful dinoflagellate blooms on the west coast of Iberia frequently occur when the Iberian poleward current (IPC) establishes on the continental slope. This has led to the suggestion that HABs could be transported northward by the IPC. To examine this possibility, the microplankton composition along the west coast of Iberia was studied in May 1993 coinciding with the presence of the IPC. The microplankton of the IPC was almost exclusively composed of small flagellates, with the notable absence of the harmful species usually associated with coastal waters. The primary influence of the IPC was to confine coastal microplankton populations to the shelf, where a downwelling convergence prevented their export from the coastal environment. Microplankton assemblages on the shelf revealed a north–south gradient related to different stages of succession. Earlier stages of succession in which diatoms were prominent were found on the northern shelf, whereas dinoflagellates were more abundant in the south. The toxic species Gymnodinium catenatum, which was only present in the southern shelf, did not show a northward transport associated with the IPC. It is suggested that the northward spreading of HABs along the west coast of Iberia must be related to the interaction between the IPC, which accumulates coastal populations on the shelf, and the latitudinal progress of microplankton succession that determines species composition. RHO GTPases are key regulators of the cytoskeletal architecture, which impact a broad range of biological processes in malignant cells including motility, invasion, and metastasis, thereby affecting tumor progression. One of the constraints during cell migration is the diameter of the pores through which cells pass. In this respect, the size and shape of the nucleus pose a major limitation. Therefore, enhanced nuclear plasticity can promote cell migration. Nuclear morphology is determined in part through the cytoskeleton, which connects to the nucleoskeleton through the Linker of Nucleoskeleton and Cytoskeleton (LINC) complex. Here, we unravel the role of RAC1 as an orchestrator of nuclear morphology in melanoma cells. We demonstrate that activated RAC1 promotes nuclear alterations through its effector PAK1 and the tubulin cytoskeleton, thereby enhancing migration and intravasation of melanoma cells. Disruption of the LINC complex prevented RAC1-induced nuclear alterations and the invasive properties of melanoma cells. Thus, RAC1 induces nuclear morphology alterations through microtubules and the LINC complex to promote an invasive phenotype in melanoma cells. 相似文献

The distribution of NADPH-diaphorase activity was examined inthe accessory olfactory bulb of the rat using a direct histochemicaltechnique. Labeled fibers and somata were found in all layersof the accessory olfactory bulb. The entire vomeronasal nerveand all vomeronasal glomeruli were strongly labeled, contraryto the main olfactory bulb, where only dorsomedial olfactoryglomeruli displayed NADPH-diaphorase activity. NADPH-diapborasepositive neurons were identified as periglomerular cells inthe glomerular layer and external plexiform layer, horizontalcells in the internal plexiform layer, and granule cells anddeep short-axon cells in the granule cell layer. The labeleddendrites of the granule cells formed a dense neuropile in thegranule cell layer, internal plexiform layer and external plexiformlayer. Roads can experience runoff problems due to the intense rain discharge associated to severe storms. Two advanced tools are combined to analyse the interaction of complex water flows with real terrains. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) photogrammetry is employed to obtain accurate topographic information on small areas, typically on the order of a few hectares. The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) technique is applied by means of the DualSPHysics model to compute the trajectory of the water flow during extreme rain events. The use of engineering solutions to palliate flood events is also analysed. The study case simulates how the collected water can flow into a close road and how precautionary measures can be effective to drain water under extreme conditions. The amount of water arriving at the road is calculated under different protection scenarios and the efficiency of a ditch is observed to decrease when sedimentation reduces its depth. 相似文献

Reduction of external ferricyanide by the human erythrocyte is significantly stimulated by insulin and somatotrophin at concentrations above physiological levels. Basal (in absence of hormones) and hormone-stimulated activities are attenuated in the presence of glycolytic inhibitors iodoacetate and vanadate indicating the requirement of glycolytic substrates for the reduction process and for the activation of cellular metabolism in response to the hormones. Sulfhydryl reagents like N-ethylmaleimide also attenuate the basal and hormone-stimulated activities and this effect was rationalized on the basis of action at SH sites which trigger responses to hormones. Stimulation of ferricyanide reduction by insulin and somatotrophin may be also the result of Na+/H+ antiport activation which may be prevented by amiloride. This suggests that Na+/H+ antiport is part of the membrane transduction system for insulin and somatotrophin in the human erythrocyte. These observations are a contribution to the study of plasma membrane oxidoreductase systems involved in physiological and metabolic functions of the cell. 相似文献

The present study analyses the effect of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and mammalian insulin on the nuclear maturation of Bufo arenarum oocytes under in vitro conditions. The response of fully grown follicle oocytes to DHT, shown by germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), occurred in a manner dependent on dose, time and sexual cycle period. The highest oocyte sensitivity to the hormone appeared during the breeding period, a fact evinced by high GVBD percentages after short incubation periods and at a low hormone concentrations. Insulin also proved effective in inducing nuclear maturation, although its action was only visible at high concentrations and after a long incubation period. The combination of insulin and steroid hormones (DHT or progesterone), both at subliminal doses, caused a noticeable potentiating synergism, resulting in a rapid and important increase in GVBD. High-scale morality is the study of moral ideas and sentiments deployed in relations that encompass multiple, geographically or socially distant populaces. The envisioning of distant people, their attributed moral personhood, the evaluation of their perceived behaviour, and the rectification of wrongs through the use of powerful organizations are key topics in high-scale morality. High-scale morality differs from existing anthropological approaches that emphasize local ethnography or contrastive moral ideas; it addresses the moralization of issues like world hunger, the drug trade, or international migration. The officers of the US Immigration and Naturalization Service understand and evaluate legal and illegal immigrants, as well as directly enacting moral rectification for the US polity. As they resolve moral dilemmas on their job, they utilize pervasive models for moral thought and action in capitalist, individualist, stratified, and bureaucratized societies. The article finishes by considering directions in which anthropology can contribute to understanding the moral dimension of global issues. 相似文献
