The selective pressures involved in the evolution of semelparity and its associated life-history traits are largely unknown. We used species-level analyses, independent contrasts, and reconstruction of ancestral states to study the evolution of body length, fecundity, egg weight, gonadosomatic index, and parity (semelparity vs. degree of iteroparity) in females of 12 species of salmonid fishes. According to both species-level analysis and independent contrasts analysis, body length was positively correlated with fecundity, egg weight, and gonadosomatic index, and semelparous species exhibited a significantly steeper slope for the regression of egg weight on body length than did iteroparous species. Percent repeat breeding (degree of iteroparity) was negatively correlated with gonadosomatic index using independent contrasts analysis. Semelparous species had significantly larger eggs by species-level analysis, and the egg weight contrast for the branch on which semelparity was inferred to have originated was significantly larger than the other egg weight contrasts, corresponding to a remarkable increase in egg weight. Reconstruction of ancestral states showed that egg weight and body length apparently increased with the origin of semelparity, but fecundity and gonadosomatic index remained more or less constant or decreased. Thus, the strong evolutionary linkages between body size, fecundity, and gonadosomatic index were broken during the transition from iteroparity to semelparity. These findings suggest that long-distance migrations, which increase adult mortality between breeding episodes, may have been necessary for the origin of semelparity in Pacific salmon, but that increased egg weight, leading to increased juvenile survivorship, was crucial in driving the transition. Our analyses support the life-history hypotheses that a lower degree of repeat breeding is linked to higher reproductive investment per breeding episode, and that semelparity evolves under a combination of relatively high juvenile survivorship and relatively low adult survivorship.  相似文献

Females of the bivoltine thrips Elaphrothrips tuberculatus (Hood) (Insecta: Thysanoptera) produce broods of either all males (by viviparity) or all females (by oviparity). Measurements of the sex-allocation ratio, ecological and physiological conditions affecting male and female offspring body size, and correlates of the relative fitnesses of adult males and females in relation to size indicate that female parents tend to be viviparous (produce males) if their offspring will become relatively large adults, and that males gain more in fitness from large size than do females. However, the conditions that link sex allocation with offspring fitness differ between the spring and summer generations. In spring, when breeding is synchronous, 1) oviparous and viviparous females do not differ in body size, 2) females tend to be viviparous where the fungus upon which they feed is relatively dense and where their offspring will become relatively large adults, and 3) fungus density is highly correlated with male and female offspring size. In summer, when breeding is relatively asynchronous, 1) viviparous females are much larger than oviparous females early (but not late) in the season, 2) large viviparous females begin breeding earlier than smaller ones, 3) offspring developing earlier in the season become larger adults, and 4) a higher proportion of females are viviparous earlier than later. Field experiments and field collections show that the covariation among sex allocation, conditions, and fitness is not caused by differential mortality by size or sex. Differences between the spring and summer generations in the cues used by females to adjust offspring sex ratio may be caused by seasonal variation in the factors that affect offspring size. However, in both generations, females tend to produce sons only when their offspring will become relatively large adults, whereas daughters are produced regardless of offspring size. These data suggest that females of E. tuberculatus avoid production of males (the sex with higher variance in expected fitness) when the size of their offspring is relatively uncertain.  相似文献

Morphology and schmelzmuster of rootless cheek teeth of 25 extant rodent genera were studied in relation to jaw movement. A differentiation between leading and trailing edges is observed regularly in enamel thickness and schmelzmuster. Similarities between antagonists are interpreted as 'functional symmetries'. Differences in the enamel thickness, the schmelzmuster and orientation of cutting edges are controlled by functional and phylogenetic constraints. The heterogenous sample allows discrimination between these two constraints. The most obvious functional constraint leads to the almost regular occurrence of radial enamel on the push sides of cutting edges. The degree of functional symmetry seems to be determined by phylogenetic limitations.  相似文献

Coherent neutron scattering measurements of an amorphous, in vivo deuterated C-phycocyanin are compared with a calculation of the individual protein molecule's coherent static structure factor. Both show the significant features associated with known structure factors of several amorphous materials, most notably, an unusually sharp first diffraction peak occurring near 1.4 A(-1). We show that in the protein, such a peak results from the product of a form factor associated with correlations of atoms within individual amino acids and a structural term expressing inter-amino-acid correlations. The measurement, interpreted through behavior of the first diffraction peak, indicates that inter-amino-acid correlations - a measure of the protein's medium-range structure - undergo transitions which are primarily related to hydration rather than to temperature.  相似文献

In the past few years there has been considerable progress in the development of mammalian cell systems for use in genetic toxicology by the stable transfer of genes/cDNAs coding for drug metabolizing enzymes directly into the target cell. Alternative approaches have also been developed in which mammalian cells are transiently transfected with cDNAs coding for drug-metabolizing enzymes and S9 preparations expressing a single metabolizing enzyme isolated and used for metabolic activation. Progress in these areas is reviewed here and the relative merits of the different approaches are discussed. Work to date has focused primarily on the cytochrome P450 family of enzymes, although other enzyme systems involved in xenobiotic metabolism have been used. The central theme of this review is the transfer of genetic information to improve the metabolic capability of cell systems used in genetic toxicology. However, a basic philosophy of the review is that genetic manipulation of cultured mammalian cells has the potential for developing systems to be used to better understand chemically induced toxicological effects.  相似文献

We have studied the effects of iontophoretic injection of the quaternary ammonium compounds tetraethylammonium (TEA) and tetrabutylammonium (TBA) in cardiac purkinje fibers. We find that TBA(+) is a more effective blocker than TEA(+), but injection of either compound reduces the time-dependent outward plateau currents, transient outward current (I(to)), and the delayed rectifier (I(x)). Our findings provide evidence that these outward cardiac currents are carried by channels that in some respects are pharmacologically similar to squid axon potassium channels. We demonstrate that this procedure is a new tool that can be useful in the analysis of membrane currents in the heart.  相似文献

An Image Analysis program was used for the quantitative evaluation and comparison of the fibronectin (FN) mRNA detected by dot-blot and in situ hybridization in different cell lines. These techniques were applied for the evaluation of FN mRNA synthesized by human normal fibroblasts (Flow 7000) and by four tumour-derived cell lines (HeLa, epithelioid carcinoma; 8387, fibrosarcoma; RD, rhabdomyosarcoma; SK Hep-1, hepatocarcinoma). Dot-blot analysis showed that the cell types analysed synthesize different levels of FN mRNA. Flow 7000 are the highest producers while HeLa the lowest. In situ hybridization confirmed these results and furthermore showed that while Flow 7000, 8387 and HeLa cells synthesized homogeneous levels of FN mRNA, RD and SK Hep-1 could be subdivided into two populations expressing high or low levels of FN mRNA. The combined analysis of dot-blot, in situ hybridization and Image Analysis allowed the quantitation of the number of FN mRNA molecules expressed by single cells. This approach is therefore an invaluable tool when evaluating mRNA expression in heterogeneous cell populations like tumour-derived cell lines, during cell cycle or in histological tissue sections.  相似文献
