Antimicrobial activity and physico-chemical properties of some alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chlorides 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A series of alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chlorides have been synthesized with n-alkyl chain lengths of C1 leads to C18. Octanol/water partition coefficients were determined and the antimicrobial activity assessed as the minimum growth inhibitory concentrations towards twelve strains of micro-organisms, representative of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, yeasts and fungi. The data were subjected to a numerical analysis. Antimicrobial activity of the compounds was found to be a parabolic function of their lipophilicity and maximized with n-alkyl chain lengths of between C12 and C16. The data fit to quadratic functions estimated for low (C1-C7) and high (C8-C16) alkyl chain length compounds was better than for a single quadratic describing the activity of the complete series (C1-C18). These maximized at log P values corresponding to alkyl-chain lengths of approximately C7 and C14 respectively, and were suggestive of low and high affinity binding sites upon the cell surface. The data analysis allowed the chain lengths of compounds with optimal activity towards the various groups of organisms to be determined. Generally yeasts and fungi were most sensitive towards C12, Gram-positive bacteria towards C14, and the Gram-negative bacteria towards C16. The juvenile hormone antagonist ETB (ethyl-4-2(t-butylcarbonyloxy)-butoxybenzoate) caused formation of precocious larval-pupal intermediates after the 4th (penultimate)-larval instar of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, when 50 μg were applied to any 3rd stage larvae or to 4th stage larvae within 12 hr after ecdysis. This dose was most effective within 12 hr after ecdysis to the 3rd stage. In the black mutant larval assay for juvenile hormone, ETB had activity, 0.75 μg per larva giving half-maximal score. In vitro ETB acted as a juvenile hormone to prevent the ecdysteroid-induced change in commitment at concentrations above 0.1 μg/ml with an ED50 at 2.8 μg/ml and as a partial juvenile hormone antagonist to 0.1 μg/ml juvenile hormone I at concentrations between 10?3 and 10?2 μg/ml. By contrast, EMD (ethyl-E-3-methyl-2-dodecenoate) had little juvenile hormone-like activity in vitro up to its limits of solubility (100 μg/ml) and exhibited sporadic partial juvenile hormone antagonistic activity in vitro at concentrations between 1 and 100 μg/ml. Sections of tendons from the base of the tail of rats were taken at eight time intervals from 18 days in utero until 244 days after birth and were examined in the electron microscope. For each time period, measurements were made of the relative area of fibroblasts, collagen and interstitial material, of the number of fibroblasts per unit area of tendon and of the average area of individual fibroblasts. The spatial arrangement of fibroblasts in the tendon sections was described quantitatively using the "nearest neighbor" method. Initially there was a rapid increase in the area of collagen accompanied by a decrease in the area occupied by fibroblasts but after 104 days of age these values changed very little. The numbers of fibroblasts per unit area decreased steadily from the embryo until 104 days whereas the average size of each cell increased to reach a maximum area at 40 days of age and then declined. At all time intervals cells were arranged in a regular, dispersed pattern across the tendon fascicles. Growth in width of the rat tail appears to involve the secretion of collagen and other intercellular material symmetrically around each fibroblast, so as to gradually separate the cells until a stage is reached at which cells are sufficiently far apart that there is little contact between adjacent cell processes. This may interfere with the integration of metabolic activity in the tissue. As a consequence, there is shrinkage of the cell bodies and a reduction in secretory activity so that, between 55 and 104 days of age, the tendon enters a period of terminal senescence. 相似文献

The cytology and chemistry of three populations of the species complex Pityrogramma triangularis from Santa Barbara County, California, were studied. The basic chromosome number of these ferns is x = 30, and there are diploids, triploids, and tetraploids. Although gross morphology in the plants is similar, four chemical types are observed when extracts of the external frond pigments are analyzed. Ten of the twelve possible combinations of ploidy level and pigment types have been found. Single crystals of horse CoHb were obtained by reduction of CoHb+ crystals with dithionite. Epr measurements showed that the g? and Coà tensors are both axial and share the same principal axis systems.
