McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, is suited for the study of the effects of eutrophication on diet-related parasites of Trematomus bernacchii (Boulenger, 1902) (Pisces). It has been relatively well studied, the environment is predictable, and there are significant differences in primary productivity over small distances. The differences in parasitism for 5 helminth species can be attributed to the enrichment processes in the sound. The prevalences of the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus sp., the nematode Ascarophis nototheniae, the digenean Dinosoma sp., and the cestode Phyllobothrium sp. are significantly higher on the east side of the sound than on the west. The prevalence of the digenean Lepidepedon garrardi was significantly higher on the west side. We believe that the differences in the prevalences of infection between the east and west sides suggest that at least the benthic, adult fish do not readily move from one side of the sound to the other. We report the following (new host records are marked by asterisks): Echinorhynchus sp., Corynosoma hamanni (Acanthocephala); Phyllobothrium sp., Diphyllobothrium sp., Trypanorhyncha (Cestoidea); Clavellopsis (Copepoda); Dinosoma sp., Lepidepedon garrardi (Digenea); Pseudobenedenoides brachicola, Polyopisthocotylea (Monogenea); Contracaecum sp., Ascarophis nototheniae (Nematoda); Myxoproteus sp., Henneguya sp., Ceratomyxa sp., and Zschokkella sp. The rebinding kinetics of CO to myoglobin after flash photolysis is nonexponential in time below approximately 180 K; the kinetics is governed by a distribution of enthalpic barriers. This distribution results from inhomogeneities in the protein conformation, referred to as conformational substates. Hole-burning experiments on the Soret and IR CO-stretch bands test the assumption that an inhomogeneous distribution of conformational substates results in inhomogeneously broadened spectra. CO was slowly photolyzed at different wavelengths in the Soret band at 10 K. Both the Soret band and the CO-stretch band A1, centered at 1,945 cm-1, shift during photolysis, demonstrating that different wavelengths excite different parts of the distributed population. We have also done kinetic hole-burning experiments by measuring peak shifts in the Soret and A1 bands as the CO molecules rebind. The shifts indicate that the spectral and enthalpic distributions are correlated. In the A1 band, the spectral and enthalpic distributions are highly correlated while in the Soret the correlation is weak. From the peak shifts in the spectral and kinetic hole-burning experiments the inhomogeneous broadening is estimated to be approximately 15% of the total width in the Soret band and approximately 60% in A1. We have previously measured the tilt angle alpha between the bound CO and the heme normal (Ormos, P., D. Braunstein, H. Frauenfelder, M. K. Hong, S.-L. Lin, T. B. Sauke, and R. D. Young. 1988. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA. 85:8492-8496) and observed a wave number dependence of the tilt angles within the CO-stretch A bands. Thus the spectral and enthalpic distributions of the A bands are coupled to a heterogeneity of the structure.  相似文献

New specimens ofBittnerula zitteli (Bittner) from the Triassic of northern Italy show that the deltidium bore spines, thickly clustered in the apical region. The spines were probably developed as auxiliary attachment or stabilising structures during or after the early atrophy of the pedicle. Deltidial spines are not known in any other spiriferide brachiopod. The only possible analogues in the Brachiopoda are the spines on the «elytridium» of the aulostegid productoids.  相似文献

A trial of oral propranolol as a hypotensive agent was designed to provide adequate treatment periods. Twenty-eight patients with essential hypertension, with a mean blood pressure of 190/111 mm. Hg, were controlled on 120-320 mg. of propranolol daily. Their mean treated blood pressure was 153/91. They then entered, on a randomized and double-blind basis, a cross-over trial of two 16-week periods, blood pressure being measured fortnightly. Propranolol caused a statistically significant fall in blood pressure when compared with placebo. When propranolol was withdrawn blood pressures rapidly rose to hypertensive levels, though not to untreated levels. No postural hypotension was found, but a small change in blood pressure levels on exercise was noted.  相似文献

Intracranial tumours such as brain gliomas and pituitary adenomas pose a challenging area of research for the development of gene therapy strategies, both from the point of view of the severity of the diseases, to the physiological implication of gene delivery into the central nervous system and pituitary gland. On the one hand, brain gliomas are very malignant tumours, with a life expectancy of six months to a year at the most after the time of diagnosis, in spite of advances in treatment modalities which involve chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. Gene therapy for these tumours is therefore a very attractive therapeutic modality which due to the severity of the disease is already in clinical trials. On the other hand, pituitary tumours are usually benign, and in most cases, treatment is successful. Nevertheless, there are some instances, especially with the macroadenomas and some invasive tumours in which treatment fails. Gene therapy strategies for these adenomas therefore needs to progress substantially in terms of safety, adverse side effects and physiological impact on the normal pituitary gland before clinical implementation. In this paper, we will review gene delivery systems both viral and non-viral and several therapeutic strategies which could be implemented for the treatment of these diseases. These include cytotoxic approaches both conditional and direct, immune-stimulatory strategies, anti-angiogenic strategies and approaches which harness pro-apoptotic and tumour suppressor gene targets. We will also review the models which are currently available in which these gene therapy strategies can be tested experimentally. This new therapeutic modality holds enormous promise, but we still need substantial improvements both from the delivery, efficacy and safety stand points before it can become a clinical reality.  相似文献

This study investigated the potential control of selected abioticparameters on an estuarine larval fish assemblage from the LimaRiver. Surveys were done fortnightly during spring tides, fromApril 2002 until April 2004, at 11 stations distributed alongthe estuary from the mouth to 7 km upstream. The surveys consistedof subsurface plankton tows of 5-min duration using a 1-m diameter,500-µm mesh net and coupled with vertical profile measurementsof temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH and turbidity.The Lima River estuary exhibited seasonal vertical stratificationof salinity during the winter period, when salinity sharplyincreased with depth and a layer of fresh water was sometimespresent at the surface. Temperature was always vertically stratified.Cooler water was typically found near the bottom of the watercolumn, except during winter, when a thermal inversion occurred.A seasonal decrease in abundance and diversity of the larvalassemblage was observed during winter, when fish larvae werealmost absent from the plankton collections. Canonical correspondenceanalysis (CCA) results showed that the first axis representeda temporal gradient and the second axis represented a spatialgradient. Seasonal variations on temperature and precipitationwere responsible for the temporal differences on the fish larvalassemblages. This study reinforced the concept that interannualclimate and hydrodynamic variations have a strong influenceon estuarine ichthyoplankton and, consequently, on the recruitmentof marine coastal fish populations. The extent of dispersal between populations of Caribbean reef fish remains largely unknown. Resolution of this issue is critical for managing populations and designing marine reserves. As part of a larger study of reef fish dispersal, we developed and characterized 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus), an abundant reef fish found throughout the Caribbean. These loci will be useful for population genetic and relatedness studies of this species and also appear to be useful in other Caribbean members of the Pomacentridae.  相似文献

A method is presented that uses beta-strand interactions to predict the parallel right-handed beta-helix super-secondary structural motif in protein sequences. A program called BetaWrap implements this method and is shown to score known beta-helices above non-beta-helices in the Protein Data Bank in cross-validation. It is demonstrated that BetaWrap learns each of the seven known SCOP beta-helix families, when trained primarily on beta-structures that are not beta-helices, together with structural features of known beta-helices from outside the family. BetaWrap also predicts many bacterial proteins of unknown structure to be beta-helices; in particular, these proteins serve as virulence factors, adhesins, and toxins in bacterial pathogenesis and include cell surface proteins from Chlamydia and the intestinal bacterium Helicobacter pylori. The computational method used here may generalize to other beta-structures for which strand topology and profiles of residue accessibility are well conserved.  相似文献

Grunts of the genus Haemulon are abundant in the western Atlantic and are an important component of regional fisheries. Management efforts for these and other Caribbean reef fish require an understanding of population structure and the extent of dispersal among populations. We characterized 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci for French grunts (Haemulon flavolineatum) and grouped them into three PCR multiplexes to facilitate high‐throughput genotyping. These loci will be useful for population genetic studies of French grunts. Cross‐species amplifications suggest these loci are also suitable for population genetic studies of H. aurolineatum, H. plumieri, and H. sciurus.  相似文献
