A prospective study of 1000 consecutive primigravidae was conducted to assess the relevance of the colour of the liquor to the welfare of the child. The results showed that clear liquor early in labour virtually ensures the birth of a healthy infant, provided the duration of labour is limited and delivery is effected without trauma; and, conversely, that meconium--or no liquor--marks the fetus who may suffer death or brain damage during normal labour. The enzymatic characteristics of a protein kinase purified from thylakoids are further described. ATP (KM approximately 30 microM) and Mg2+ ion (greater than 1.0 mM) were required for activity, while ADP was a competitive inhibitor (Ki = 100 microM). Activity was 55% inhibited by the sulfhydryl inhibitor p-chloromercuribenzoate (1 mM) and was less sensitive to substituted maleimides. Lysine-rich histones (H1) were utilized as an exogenous phosphorylation substrate both by thylakoid-bound kinase and by isolated enzyme; threonine was predominantly phosphorylated by the in situ enzyme, whereas the isolated enzyme phosphorylated closely related serine residues as determined by peptide mapping. Detergents that proved useful in extracting the kinase from thylakoids markedly inhibited activity of the isolated enzyme, whereas Triton X-100 and 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propane-sulfonic acid had little effect. The enzyme could be freed from detergent and behaved as an active monomer on size-exclusion chromatography. The phosphate contents of the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b protein complex of photosystem II isolated from maximally phosphorylated thylakoid membranes of spinach and pea were equivalent to approximately 6% and approximately 19% phosphorylation, respectively. The notion of primordialism has been used to describe the origins and strength of ethnic attachments in the literature on ethnicity for the last three decades. It was originally coined by Shils and developed by Geertz in the 1950s. Recent trends have shifted emphasis away from primordialism towards structural and circumstantial/situational approaches. These alternative approaches frequently provide implicit criticism of the notion of primordialism by pointing to counter examples, cases of ethnic attachments that vary over time and according to circumstance, hence undermining the contention that such loyalties could be considered ‘primordial’. Here, for the first time, the concept of primordialism is examined in its own terms. We analyse the intellectual history of the notion, its intended meaning and the misunderstandings it has spawned. We identify three aspects of primordialism and submit each to critical scrutiny. We conclude that the term is unsociological, unanalytical and vacuous. Germination is determined by the depth of primary dormancy and the dynamics of secondary dormancy induction. We assess how dark imbibition at cool temperatures influences primary dormancy breakage and secondary dormancy induction, and how the depth of primary dormancy influences secondary dormancy induction. We manipulated primary dormancy by maturing seeds at two temperatures (‘pre‐dispersal’) known to induce different levels of primary dormancy, and by employing genotypes that differ in primary dormancy. To assess primary dormancy breakage and secondary dormancy induction, seeds of each genotype and maturation treatment were imbibed in the dark at one of four temperatures (‘post‐dispersal’) for one of three durations. Germination proportions were recorded. Seed ‐ maturation condition and genotype influenced the degree of primary dormancy breakage in response to dark stratification and in the optimal temperature for dormancy breakage. Secondary dormancy induction was strongest in cool‐matured seeds and seeds stratified at warmer temperatures for longer durations. These effects were consistent across genotypes. Maturation temperature influenced the expression of genetic variation for primary but not secondary dormancy, which showed little genetic variation. Seed‐maturation temperature influenced primary and secondary dormancy induction by dark imbibition, and it also influenced the expression of genetic variation for temperature‐dependent dormancy breakage. Cool seed‐maturation induced primary dormancy in a genotype‐specific manner and enhanced secondary dormancy induction. Post‐dispersal temperature also influenced primary dormancy breakage and secondary dormancy induction. The observed interactions between primary and secondary dormancy, and between pre‐ and post‐dispersal temperature, are expected to influence life‐history expression in nature. 相似文献

Previous genetic studies using neutral markers such as allozymes, mtDNA and minisatellite loci have demonstrated varying amounts of population structure in cod Gadus morhua throughout the Atlantic. Microsatellite loci, which are potentially the most informative of presently available neutral genetic markers, have been applied extensively within western and eastern Atlantic areas but not on a range-wide basis. In the present study, six microsatellite DNA loci were used to screen cod samples from nine locations throughout the geographic range from the Scotian Shelf in the West Atlantic to the Barents and Baltic Seas in the east. Overall F ST value was 0·03 ( P = < 0·001) across all samples. Statistically significant population differences over all loci combined were evident between more geographically distant samples, using either heterogeneity tests or F ST analysis, with at least one locus showing significant differences between all samples (prior to Bonferroni correction). A significant correlation was observed between genetic and geographical distance, suggesting a higher level of historical and contemporary gene flow between adjacent populations than more distant populations. Samples from either end of the geographic range (Scotian Shelf and Baltic Sea) were particularly distinct when analysed using the STRUCTURE programme and also showed a high level of self-assignment when individuals of either the Scotian Shelf or Baltic Sea were tested against the entire data set. The present microsatellite study demonstrates a high level of geographic population structure between the western Atlantic, middle and eastern Atlantic and Baltic Sea, and thus, the findings should be useful in devising overall management and conservation strategies for the species. 相似文献
