Significance of Automatically Detected Word Recurrences in Dream Associations

Verbal data files including dream reports and associations with the report items were subjected to automatic analysis aiming at the recognition of word recurrences. The research was based on the following assumptions: the associations can provide information about the dream sources; the recognition of word recurrences in text files can be a useful tool for the study of dreaming; the identification of links between different dream sources can provide an interesting insight into the phenomenon of dreaming. The principal result obtained was that word recurrences often evidence possible significant links between dream sources. A number of the possible links evidenced by the automatic analysis not only escaped the subject's notice, but might also be unexpected for an analyzer not assisted by a computer.     

A survey of the reproductive biology in Italian branchiopods

A survey of the most important aspects of the reproductive biology of Lepidurus apus lubbocki Brauer, 1873 (Notostraca) is presented. Gametogenesis, germ cell distribution, and somatic tract structure of the male gonad are studied by means of TEM and SEM. The most important data emerging from our observations is the total and widespread degeneration of the sperms. We discuss the real functionality of male germ cells, and the implications on sexuality and reproductive strategies. On the whole, present ultrastructural observations suggest that males of Lepidurus apus lubbocki are not functional. Therefore, we suggest that this form reproduces parthenogenetically as the functional female gonad lacks any associated testicular cells. For comparison, we analyzed the male portion of the hermaphroditic gonad of Triops longicaudatus (LeConte, 1846) from California. In this case functionallity of the testis lobes and sperm were readily apparent.     

A new rheometer with special features designed for bronchial mucus analysis in clinical practice.

Changes in production and in physico-chemical properties of bronchial mucus is a common denominator of many pulmonary diseases. A rheometer with innovative features aimed at bronchial mucus routine investigation in clinical practice at the bedside of the patient has been designed. Searle-type configuration with a coaxial cylinder sensor system and the Mooney-Ewart geometry has been adopted. Another new feature is that bob and cup are disposable. Dynamic viscoelasticity is calculated through a microprocessor with specific software and by means of a magnetic torque--motor electronically driven by the microprocessor. The self-zeroing procedure and the autorange greatly simplify the measuring-cycle which is driven by only one switch. Data (eta and G') are automatically printed on paper. The whole measuring-cycle at the bedside of the patient takes 3-5 min, so that in 1h about 12 samples can be investigated.     

Further evidence of a duplication in 17p11.2 in families with recurrence of HMSN Ia (Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy type Ia)

Five Italian families with recurrence of cases of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (type Ia) were analysed using three closely linked DNA probes that detect polymorphisms in the region 17p11.2. The probe pVAW409R3 detected the presence of a duplication in all the affected subjects, but not in the subjects with normal electromyographic (EMG) findings. This observation confirms previous data indicating the association of the duplication with the disease, suggesting that, at least in populations of European origin, the duplication might be the molecular feature diagnostic of the pathological trait.     

Genetic epidemiology of congenital muscular dystrophy in a sample from north-east Italy

Congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD) is a heterogenous disease with autosomic recessive transmission. In an epidemiological study in four provinces of Veneto (region of 2586830 inhabitants in north-east Italy), the recorded incidence rate for the period 1979–1993 was 4.65 x 10^–5; the prevalence rate in the year 1993 was 6.8 × 10^–6. The incidence and the prevalence rates that we have obtained during the course of our investigation represent the first estimates for CMD in Europe and show that this myopathy is among the most frequent neuromuscular diseases with autosomic recessive transmission.
