Tulasnella spp. are the main fungal symbionts of Brazilian Epidendrum orchids. The taxonomy of these fungi is largely based on ITS rDNA similarity, but culture dependent techniques are still essential to establish the true biological entity of the mycobiont. The aim of this study was to characterize morphologically and molecularly 16 Tulasnella spp. fungi isolated from three different populations of E. secundum and to test the coincidences between morphological and molecular characterization. Two uninucleate rhizoctonia fungi, obtained from Oncidium barbaceniae, and two phytopathogenic isolates were included as outgroups. Qualitative and quantitative morphological characteristics were analyzed using multivariate statistics and were able to distinguish Ceratobasidium, Tulasnella and Thanatephorus genera and separate the isolates of Tulasnella spp. into two groups. Analysis of RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) and ITS rDNA sequences validated the morphological data. Symbionts of O. barbaceniae presented identity to ITS sequences of Ceratobasidium genus, while E. secundum isolates presented identity to two species of Tulasnella. We observed homogeneity among Tulasnella spp. obtained from a single population and from neighboring populations, but there was higher variability among isolates obtained from populations of regions that were farther apart. Morphological data associated with multivariate statistics proved to be a useful tool in the multi-level taxonomy of these orchid-associated fungi and in estimating the diversity of orchid mycorrhizal fungi. 相似文献

Background
Dental caries is a serious public health concern. The high cost of dental treatment can be avoided by effective preventive measures, which are dependent on dentists’ adherence. This study aimed to evaluate the factors that drive dentists towards or away from dental caries preventive measures.Methods and Findings
This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42012002235). Several databases as well as the reference lists and citations of the included publications were searched according to PRISMA guidelines, yielding 18,276 titles and abstracts, which were assessed to determine study eligibility. Seven qualitative studies and 41 surveys (36,501 participants) remained after data extraction and interpretation. A total of 43 findings were abstracted from the reports and were grouped together into 6 categories that were judged to be topically similar: education and training, personal beliefs, work conditions, remuneration, gender, place of residence and patients. The main findings for adherence based on their calculated frequency effect sizes (ES) were teamwork (21%) and post-graduation (12%), while for non-adherence were biologicism (27%), and remuneration for preventive procedures (25%). Intensity ES were also calculated and demonstrated low prevalence of the findings. Quality assessment of the studies demonstrated that the methodological quality, particularly of surveys, varied widely among studies.Conclusions
Despite the questionable quality of the included reports, the evidence that emerged seems to indicate that further education and training coupled with a fairer pay scheme would be a reasonable approach to change the balance in favor of the provision of dental caries preventive measures by dentists. The results of this review could be of value in the planning and decision making processes aimed at encouraging changes in professional dental practice that could result in the improvement of the oral health care provided to the population in general. 相似文献683.

Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) is a key enzyme in the phenylpropanoid pathway responsible for biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites, such as anthocyanins, flavanols, and lignins. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of different rootstock/scion combinations on Prunus tree growth, PAL gene expression, and PAL activity in order to identify compatibility of different graft combinations. The study was performed with peach (P. persica cv. Chimarrita) grafted on two peach rootstocks (Capdeboscq and Tsukuba1) and one Japanese apricot (P. mume cv. Umezeiro). Two or three years after grafting, the growth of peach scion on Umezeiro was weak and finally the death of some trees occurred. The peach rootstocks induced vigorous growth without any tree loss through the three years of evaluation. However, PAL activity and expression of PAL encoding genes were higher in Umezeiro as compared to the other rootstocks. These results show that the differential gene expression together with the PAL activity is a promising strategy to predict graft incompatibility. 相似文献

This study analyzed the size at sexual maturity and reproductive period of populations of Hepatus pudibundus in three bays on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were collected monthly and the bottom-water temperature was measured at each collection point. The animals were sexed, measured for carapace width (CW), and their gonadal stages were determined. A total of 8,674 specimens were collected (2,435 males and 6,239 females). Adult males showed the highest mean CW; the size at maturity for both sexes was 32.5 mm CW. Reproduction was continuous and peaked in spring and summer, because of the greater availability of plankton food for the larvae. This pattern is typical in tropical and subtropical regions, unlike the seasonal reproduction found in temperate regions. Reproductive activity of females was not significantly correlated with bottom-water temperatures. Immatures and individuals in all stages of gonadal development were found throughout the sampling period and at all depths, probably because the species completes its entire reproductive cycle in that area. 相似文献

As mangroves become recognized as important carbon storages, the need for reducing the uncertainty of carbon inventories becomes increasingly emphasized. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to develop allometric models to estimate the total aboveground biomass (AGB) and the biomass per compartment of Avicennia schaueriana and to compare them with other models previously published for the genus Avicennia. Fifty three A. schaueriana trees, with different diameters at breast height (DBH) and height, were felled in a mangrove from Southeastern Brazil and their dry weight determined. Simple linear regression analysis was used to develop the equations after log-transformation, using the following independent variables: DBH and DBH2 * height. All the equations were significant and presented high R a 2 (adjusted coefficient of determination). DBH provided the lowest SEE (standard error of estimation) in the regressions associated to leaves and total AGB, while DBH2 * height generated the most precise regressions for trunk, branches, and twigs. In comparison with other 11 equations previously developed for the genus Avicennia, the equation developed in the present study for total AGB showed the lowest mean deviation in relation to trees with known biomass, underscoring the importance of developing species- and site-specific equations. 相似文献

The diets of six shark species, Sphyrna lewini, Sphyrna zygaena, Carcharhinus obscurus, Carcharhinus limbatus, Rhizoprionodon lalandii and Galeocerdo cuvier, were investigated in a subtropical coastal ecosystem of southern Brazil. Stomach content data were obtained to assess foraging niche segregation and ontogenetic shifts in the diets of these sharks. Five of the shark species off the Paraná coast were ichthyophagous, with the exception of S. zygaena, which was teutophagous. With the exception of G. cuvier, which had a generalist diet, the other five species displayed specialization in their feeding. Ontogenetic shifts were observed in C. obscurus and S. lewini with large individuals consuming elasmobranchs. Owing to the diet overlap between C. obscurus and S. lewini, C. obscurus and C. limbatus and R. lalandii and C. limbatus, future studies on the spatial and temporal distributions of these species are needed to understand the extent of competitive interactions. 相似文献

Inheritance of DNA cytosine methylation pattern during successive cell division is mediated by maintenance DNA (cytosine-5) methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1). Lysine 142 of DNMT1 is methylated by the SET domain containing lysine methyltransferase 7 (SET7), leading to its degradation by proteasome. Here we show that PHD finger protein 20-like 1 (PHF20L1) regulates DNMT1 turnover in mammalian cells. Malignant brain tumor (MBT) domain of PHF20L1 binds to monomethylated lysine 142 on DNMT1 (DNMT1K142me1) and colocalizes at the perinucleolar space in a SET7-dependent manner. PHF20L1 knockdown by siRNA resulted in decreased amounts of DNMT1 on chromatin. Ubiquitination of DNMT1K142me1 was abolished by overexpression of PHF20L1, suggesting that its binding may block proteasomal degradation of DNMT1K142me1. Conversely, siRNA-mediated knockdown of PHF20L1 or incubation of a small molecule MBT domain binding inhibitor in cultured cells accelerated the proteasomal degradation of DNMT1. These results demonstrate that the MBT domain of PHF20L1 reads and controls enzyme levels of methylated DNMT1 in cells, thus representing a novel antagonist of DNMT1 degradation. 相似文献

Interspecific differences in diet of the two sympatric fish species of the subfamily Aphyocharacinae were investigated. Both
were sampled monthly (March 2000 to February 2001) during the rainy and dry season in North region of the Pantanal. Aphyocharax anisitsi was an invertivorous/insectivorous species, feeding mainly on aquatic insects during the rainy season and terrestrial insects
in the dry season. Aphyocharax dentatus remained a piscivorous regardless of the hydrological season. Low feeding-overlap values, 0.079 in the dry season and no
overlap in the rainy season were observed. The diet-breadth values for each species were low (less than 0.1) except for A. anisitsi in the lake during the dry season (0.4). A detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) summarized the diet similarity patterns:
in DCA 1, it was observed that fish prey grouped A. dentatus in the lower scores, and insect prey grouped A. anisitsi in the higher scores. A two-way ANOVA showed that the diets differed significantly between the species. Our results show
a clear trophic segregation between these species, supporting the niche concept that presumes that differences between sympatric
species must exist, to allow their coexistence. Besides extreme segregation, it was clear that A. dentatus is a piscivorous fish, despite its low size (until 72 mm). This finding counteracts the current view about food web structure

Objective: To perform an oral biopsy survey focused on the incidence of oral lesions in Brazilian elderly patients. Methods: A total of 17 329 oral biopsy records were analysed and divided into two age groups: elderly patients, ≥60 years old; and non‐elderly patients, <60 years old. Information about sex, race, age and histopathological diagnosis (categorised in non‐neoplastic and neoplastic lesions) was collected. Differences of diagnosis incidence were tested by comparison between two proportions (binomial test). Results: The incidence of epithelial malignant neoplasms and pre‐malignant lesions in the elderly group was higher than non‐elderly group, as well as autoimmune diseases and salivary gland tumours. The three most prevalent lesions in the elderly group were inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, squamous cell carcinoma, and fibroma. Conclusion: The distribution of oral diseases using biopsies allows greater accuracy in data about oral health of elderly patients, especially when considering malignant and pre‐malignant lesions. 相似文献

The ethidium bromide (EB) demyelinating model was associated with interferon beta (IFN-β) to evaluate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the striatum (ST), hippocampus (HP), cerebral cortex (CC), cerebellum (CB), hypothalamus (HY), pons (PN) and synaptosomes from the CC. Rats were divided into four groups: I control (saline), II (IFN-β), III (EB) and IV (EB and IFN-β). After 7, 15 and 30 days rats (n = 6) were sacrificed, and the brain structures were removed for enzymatic assay. AChE activity was found to vary in all the brain structures in accordance with the day studied (7–15–30 days) (P < 0.05). In the group III, there was an inhibition of the AChE activity in the ST, CB, HY, HP and also in synaptosomes of the CC (P < 0.05). It was observed that IFN-β per se was capable to significantly inhibit (P < 0.05) AChE activity in the ST, HP, HY and synaptosomes of the CC. Our results suggest that one of the mechanisms of action of IFN-β is through the inhibition of AChE activity, and EB could be considered an inhibitor of AChE activity by interfering with cholinergic neurotransmission in the different brain regions. 相似文献
