Integration of New Males into Four Social Groups of Tufted Capuchins (Cebus apella)

We examined how aggressive, affiliative, and sexual behavior function to integrate male capuchins (Cebus apella) into a new social group. Nine males were exchanged among four social groups. We performed instantaneous scans and all-occurrence sampling during baseline, introduction, and follow-up periods. The study included three different introduction situations: 1) males familiar to one another were introduced to a group with no other adult male, 2) males unfamiliar to one another were introduced to a group with no other adult male, and 3) males familiar to one another were introduced to a group with an existing elderly, resident male. Severe aggression occurred in situations 2 and 3, but the introductions were peaceful in situation 1. In all cases proceptive females were among the first individuals to affiliate with the males, and males did not appear to compete for access to proceptive females. Following their period of proceptivity, the females that had cycled remained preferred social partners for the males. Immature animals also quickly affiliated with the new males, and the males tolerated the attention from immatures. Affiliative relationships between the males and nonproceptive females developed slowly, and while male-female aggression was mild, aggression among adult males (familiar and unfamiliar) had the potential to be severe.     

Urea transport in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Urea transport in Saccharomyces cerevisiae occurs by two pathways. The first mode of uptake is via an active transport system which: (i) has an apparent Km value of 14 muM, (ii) is absolutely dependent upon energy metabolism, (iii) requires pre-growth of the cultures in the presence of oxaluric acid, gratuitous inducer of the allantoin degradative enzymes, and (iv) is sensitive to nitrogen repression. The second mode of uptake which occurs at external urea concentrations in excess of 0.5 mM is via either passive or facilitated diffusion.     

Auditory sequence analysis and phonological skill

This work tests the relationship between auditory and phonological skill in a non-selected cohort of 238 school students (age 11) with the specific hypothesis that sound-sequence analysis would be more relevant to phonological skill than the analysis of basic, single sounds. Auditory processing was assessed across the domains of pitch, time and timbre; a combination of six standard tests of literacy and language ability was used to assess phonological skill. A significant correlation between general auditory and phonological skill was demonstrated, plus a significant, specific correlation between measures of phonological skill and the auditory analysis of short sequences in pitch and time. The data support a limited but significant link between auditory and phonological ability with a specific role for sound-sequence analysis, and provide a possible new focus for auditory training strategies to aid language development in early adolescence.     

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray investigation of Escherichia coli porphobilinogen deaminase.

Porphobilinogen deaminase, the polymerase that catalyses the synthesis of preuroporphyrinogen, the linear tetrapyrrole precursor of uroporphyrinogen III, has been crystallized from sodium acetate buffer with polyethylene glycol 6000 as precipitant. The crystals are orthorhombic and the space group is P2(1)2(1)2, with unit cell dimensions a = 88.01 A, b = 75.86 A, c = 50.53 A and alpha = beta = gamma = 90 degrees, indicating a single molecule of 34 kDa in the asymmetric unit. The crystals grow to dimensions of 1 mm x 2 mm x 0.5 mm within two weeks in the dark and are stable in the X-ray beam for at least 40 hours. Diffraction data beyond 1.7 A resolution, observed with a synchrotron radiation source, indicate that a high resolution structure analysis is feasible.     

Evaluation of an innate immune reaction to parasites in earthworms

Encapsulation is an essential process of the invertebrate immune system and includes the prophenoloxidase (proPO) cascade. We present an assay for evaluating this immune response, now newly adapted to earthworms. Coelomic fluid is withdrawn and coelomocytes are stained with l-Dopa. We studied assay repeatability and the correlation between number of PO-active cells and infection level of the parasitic protozoan Monocystis sp. in the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris. Our study showed high assay repeatability although the expected negative relationship between PO-active coelomocytes and parasite load was not observed; yet a suggestion toward a positive relationship was detected. This finding is contrary to previous assumptions that presume coelomocyte concentrations to be the independent variable determining parasite load.
