Nano-engineered superhydrophobic surfaces have been investigated for potential fouling resistance properties. Integrating hydrophobic materials with nanoscale roughness generates surfaces with superhydrophobicity that have water contact angles (θ) >150° and concomitant low hysteresis (<10°). Three superhydrophobic coatings (SHCs) differing in their chemical composition and architecture were tested against major fouling species (Amphora sp., Ulva rigida, Polysiphonia sphaerocarpa, Bugula neritina, Amphibalanus amphitrite) in settlement assays. The SHC which had nanoscale roughness alone (SHC 3) deterred the settlement of all the tested fouling organisms, compared to selective settlement on the SHCs with nano- and micro-scale architectures. The presence of air incursions or nanobubbles at the interface of the SHCs when immersed was characterized using small angle X-ray scattering, a technique sensitive to local changes in electron density contrast resulting from partial or complete wetting of a rough interface. The coating with broad spectrum antifouling properties (SHC 3) had a noticeably larger amount of unwetted interface when immersed, likely due to the comparatively high work of adhesion (60.77 mJ m?2 for SHC 3 compared to 5.78 mJ m?2 for the other two SHCs) required for creating solid/liquid interface from the solid/vapour interface. This is the first example of a non-toxic, fouling resistant surface against a broad spectrum of fouling organisms ranging from plant cells and non-motile spores, to complex invertebrate larvae with highly selective sensory mechanisms. The only physical property differentiating the immersed surfaces is the nano-architectured roughness which supports longer standing air incursions providing a novel non-toxic broad spectrum mechanism for the prevention of biofouling.  相似文献

Fatty acid analysis was done with GC and GC-MS on 21 strains of 'Streptococcus milleri', representative of the various proposed species. Although no qualitative differences were found in the fatty acid profiles, discriminant analysis of the quantitative data revealed three groups. Streptococcus anginosus and Streptococcus constellatus were indistinguishable but separated from the other two groups which comprised Streptococcus intermedius, with a wide fermentation pattern and Streptococcus intermedius with a narrow fermentation pattern. Three of the strains could be distinguished from the others by a 'fingerprint' of a particularly prominent fatty acid peak. The results support the suggestion that there is more than one species in this group of organisms and that the technique might be of value in epidemiological investigations of 'S. milleri'.  相似文献

The etiological agent of whooping cough, Bordetella pertussis, destroys the ciliated epithelial cells lining the large airways of infected individuals. This cytopathology can be reproduced in respiratory epithelium by tracheal cytotoxin (TCT), a small peptidoglycan-related molecule purified from the culture supernatant of growing B. pertussis organisms. Using fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, we analyzed the positive- and negative-ion spectra of the purified, biologically active material and assigned a mass of 921 daltons to TCT. Analysis of fragment ions in these spectra as well as the spectra of the methyl ester and acetylated derivatives of TCT unambiguously defined the primary structure of TCT as N-acetylglucosaminyl-1,6-anhydro-N-acetylmuramylalanyl-gamma- glutamyldiaminopimelylalanine. TCT is therefore identical with the ciliostatic anhydropeptidoglycan monomer released by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and with the neurologically active slow-wave sleep-promoting factor FSu. These and other structurally related glycopeptides containing muramic acid thus form a family of molecules with remarkably diverse biological activities.  相似文献

We investigated the impacts of forest thinning, prescribed fire, and contour ripping on community level physiological profiles (CLPP) of the soil microbial population in postmining forest rehabilitation. We hypothesized that these management practices would affect CLPP via an influence on the quality and quantity of soil organic matter. The study site was an area of Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata Donn ex Sm.) forest rehabilitation that had been mined for bauxite 12 years previously. Three replicate plots (20 × 20 m) were established in nontreated forest and in forest thinned from 3,000–8,000 stems ha−1 to 600–800 stems ha−1 in April (autumn) of 2003, followed either by a prescribed fire in September (spring) of 2003 or left nonburned. Soil samples were collected in August 2004 from two soil depths (0–5 cm and 5–10 cm) and from within mounds and furrows caused by postmining contour ripping. CLPP were not affected by prescribed fire, although the soil pH and organic carbon (C), total C and total nitrogen (N) contents were greater in burned compared with nonburned plots, and the coarse and fine litter mass lower. However, CLPP were affected by forest thinning, as were fine litter mass, soil C/N ratio, and soil pH, which were all higher in thinned than nonthinned plots. Furrow soil had greater coarse and fine litter mass, and inorganic phosphorous (P), organic P, organic C, total C, total N, ammonium, microbial biomass C contents, but lower soil pH and soil C/N ratio than mound soil. Soil pH, inorganic P, organic P, organic C, total C and N, ammonium, and microbial biomass C contents also decreased with depth, whereas soil C/N ratio increased. Differences in CLPP were largely (94%) associated with the relative utilization of gluconic, malic (greater in nonthinned than thinned soil and mound than furrow soil), l-tartaric, succinic, and uric acids (greater in thinned than nonthinned, mound than furrow, and 5–10 cm than 0–5 cm soil). The relative utilization of amino acids also tended to increase with increasing soil total C and organic C contents but decreased with increasing nitrate content, whereas the opposite was true for carboxylic acids. Only 45% of the variance in CLPP was explained using a multivariate multiple regression model, but soil C and N pools and litter mass were significant predictors of CLPP. Differences in soil textural components between treatments were also correlated with CLPP; likely causes of these differences are discussed. Our results suggest that 1 year after treatment, CLPP from this mined forest ecosystem are resilient to a spring prescribed fire but not forest thinning. We conclude that differences in CLPP are likely to result from complex interactions among soil properties that mediate substrate availability, microbial nutrient demand, and microbial community composition.  相似文献

The strong coupling between the flow in coronary vessels and the mechanical deformation of the myocardial tissue is a central feature of cardiac physiology and must therefore be accounted for by models of coronary perfusion. Currently available geometrically explicit vascular models fail to capture this interaction satisfactorily, are numerically intractable for whole organ simulations, and are difficult to parameterise in human contexts. To address these issues, in this study, a finite element formulation of an incompressible, poroelastic model of myocardial perfusion is presented. Using high-resolution ex vivo imaging data of the coronary tree, the permeability tensors of the porous medium were mapped onto a mesh of the corresponding left ventricular geometry. The resultant tensor field characterises not only the distinct perfusion regions that are observed in experimental data, but also the wide range of vascular length scales present in the coronary tree, through a multi-compartment porous model. Finite deformation mechanics are solved using a macroscopic constitutive law that defines the coupling between the fluid and solid phases of the porous medium. Results are presented for the perfusion of the left ventricle under passive inflation that show wall-stiffening associated with perfusion, and that show the significance of a non-hierarchical multi-compartment model within a particular perfusion territory.  相似文献

In this issue of Neuron, Goodchild et al. show that torsinA knockout and knockin mice have similar phenotypes, which suggests that the mutant torsinA allele causes disease because it has decreased function. Abstract: The reaction of superoxide and nitric oxide results in the formation of peroxynitrite, a long lived and highly reactive oxidant species. It has been suggested that the formation of peroxynitrite in vivo may contribute to cell death in some neurological conditions. We have examined the effect of peroxynitrite on cell death in the NSC34 spinal cord cell line. A brief (30 min) exposure to either peroxynitrite or hydrogen peroxide caused delayed cell death with an EC50 for both of ∼1 m M . Cell death was prevented by the RNA synthesis inhibitor actinomycin D and included DNA damage as an early event. We sought to clarify the potential role of the DNA binding enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) in cell death in these cells. Several PARP inhibitors [benzamide, 3-aminobenzamide, nicotinamide, and 6(5 H )-phenanthridinone] prevented cell death, but the inactive analogue benzoic acid did not. However, there was no evidence of cleavage of PARP, which occurs in apoptosis via the activation of the caspase CPP32. Therefore, we suggest that PARP contributes to neuronal injury as an early event, probably by lethal NAD depletion, without any requirement for proteolytic cleavage.  相似文献

The surgery premises of many general practitioners have no accommodation for a nurse. Some have only a nurse/treatment room away from the consulting and examination rooms. Modern designs are no better, and are inadequate in view of the present trend to employ more nurses in group practices. Much of the value of a nurse is lost if she cannot help patient and doctor at the time of examination. The premises described here were designed to enable her to do so by combining the treatment room with a clinical room and a set of examination rooms.  相似文献
