Summary The effects of carbon dioxide and of bicarbonate on cell division were studied on synchronized cells of the high-temperature green alga, Chlorella 7-11-05. After 7 hours of growth in nutrient medium in light, cells were centrifuged and resuspended in distilled water or in bicarbonate and placed in darkness. Atmospheric air, or a mixture of carbon dioxide and air, was bubbled through algal suspensions during the dark period. In distilled water cells readily divided in atmospheric air but not in 1% (2.6·10-4 M) or in higher concentrations of carbon dioxide. The suspension of cells in bicarbonate counteracted the inhibitory action of carbon dioxide. A minimum molar concentration of bicarbonate necessary to counteract the inhibitory effect of carbon dioxide was found to be equal to the molar concentration of carbon dioxide in the suspending fluid. The highest concentration of carbon dioxide, the adverse effect of which could not be balanced by any concentration of bicarbonate, was found to be in the vicinity of 1.3·10-2 M (50% CO2 in air). Possible effects on cell division of the change in Ph and the implicated role of carbon dioxide in normal and neoplastic growth were discussed. 相似文献

Rats fed a diet deficient in vitamin D were found to exhibit a refractory cyclic AMP response of kidney slices to parathyroid hormone and a marked decrease in membrane parathyroid hormone-dependent adenylate cyclase activity. Both the characteristic calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia) and secondary elevation of circulating parathyroid hormone appeared before the first noticeable decrease in hormone-dependent enzyme activity. After repletion of D-deficient rats with vitamin D2, we found that serum calcium and parathyroid hormone were both restored to normal levels before the depressed enzyme response to the hormone was reversed. Moreover, infusion of parathyroid hormone into vitamin D-replete rats led to a marked reduction in parathyroid hormone-dependent adenylate cyclase activity, which was partly restored to control level 3 hours after discontinuing the hormone infusion. Taken as a whole, this study suggests that the elevated endogenous parathyroid hormone in the vitamin D-deficient rat is involved in the “down-regulation” of renal cyclic AMP responsiveness to the hormone. However, these experiments do not rule out the possibility that calcium deficiency and/or vitamin D per se participate in the regulation of the renal cyclic AMP response to parathyroid hormone. 相似文献

Aim
Large marine predators, such as cetaceans and sharks, play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity patterns and ecosystem function, yet few estimates of their spatial distribution exist. We aimed to determine the species richness of large marine predators and investigate their fine-scale spatiotemporal distribution patterns to inform conservation management.Location

We conducted a replicate systematic aerial survey over 12 months. Flexible machine learning models were used to explore relationships between large marine predator occurrence (Bryde's whales, common and bottlenose dolphins, bronze whaler, pelagic and immature hammerhead sharks) and environmental and biotic variables, and predict their monthly distribution and associated spatially explicit uncertainty.Results
We revealed that temporally dynamic variables, such as prey distribution and sea surface temperature, were important for predicting the occurrence of the study species and species groups. While there was variation in temporal and spatial distribution, predicted richness peaked in summer and was the highest in coastal habitats during that time, providing insight into changes in distributions over time and between species.Main Conclusions
Temporal changes in distribution are not routinely accounted for in species distribution studies.
