We have shown that the expression of mam2, the gene encoding the Schizosaccharomyces pombe P-factor pheromone receptor, is dependent upon components of the pheromone signal transduction pathway, including Ras1, Gpa1, Byr1 and Byr2, each of which is required for both conjugation and sporulation. Studies of the expression of mam2 in mutant S. pombe cells confirm previous conclusions, based on the ability of cells to sporulate, that the Byr1 protein kinase acts downstream of the Byr2 protein kinase and that both act downstream of Ras1, the S. pombe RAS homolog, and Gpa1, the G alpha component that mediates the occupancy of the mam2 receptor. In addition, our present studies show that Ras1 and Gpa1 each act downstream from the other and hence act in concert. The Spk1 kinase, which is required for conjugation and sporulation and which is a structural and functional homolog of the vertebrate MAP kinases, is not required for mam2 expression.  相似文献

A recent model of parental provisioning (the tradeoff model) suggests that the maximum delivery rate of food to nestlings represents a tradeoff between parental residual reproductive value and nestling survival. In contrast, Lack's hypothesis suggests that maximum provisioning rate determines brood size and therefore delivery rates are limited by shortages of food or foraging time, not by tradeoffs of parental investment. Several authors have examined the shape of the per-nestling feeding curves to test the tradeoff model against Lack's hypothesis. We show that Lack's hypothesis can produce per-nestling feeding curves consistent with the tradeoff model. Therefore, the shape of the per-nestling feeding curve cannot be used to distinguish between the models.  相似文献

The uptake of lead by two contrasting plant species, radish and red fescue, grown in soils contaminated by mine spoil was investigated. Uptake was found to be poorly correlated either with pH or total Pb concentration in the soils. By contrast, a good correlation was obtained, particularly for red fescue, between Pb uptake and Pb concentration in the solution of equilibrated soil suspensions over a wide range of soil pH, total soil Pb and soil solution Pb concentration.Calculations suggested a similar order of magnitude in the total amounts of Pb taken up by the plants and Pb in the soil solution of the root zone, justifying the latter as a good index of Pb-availability. ei]Section editor: A C Borstlap  相似文献

To determine the identity of the tick vector of enzooticBabesia gibsoni in California, two common ixodid ticks were allowed to engorge uponB. gibsoni infected dogs. Sporozoites were observed in the salivary glands of prefed nymphalRhipicephalus sanguineus ticks that fed as larvae onB. gibsoni-infected dogs. A higher proportion (31%) of nymphal ticks that prefed on an uninfected dog for 48 hours contained sporozoites in their salivary glands than did ticks which had fed for 24 hours (13%). Sporozoites were not observed in the salivary glands of prefedR. sanguineus nymphs which were derived from the eggs of adult females that fed on an infected dog, in adults that were fed as nymph on an infected dog, or in the nymphal and adult uninfected controls.Dermacentor variabilis ticks appeared not to become infected. Although attempts to transmitB. gibsoni to susceptible, splenectomized dogs were unsuccessful,R. sanguineus would appear to be the most likely tick vector to maintain this piroplasm in California.
