Summary Numerous studies have demonstrated a negative relationship between increasing habitat complexity and predator foraging success. Results from many of these studies suggest a non-linear relationship, and it has been hypothesised that some threshold level of complexity is required before foraging success is reduced significantly. We examined this hypothesis using largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) foraging on juvenile bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) in various densities of artificial vegetation. Largemouth foraging success differed significantly among the densities of vegetation tested. Regression analysis revealed a non-linear relationship between increasing plant stem density and predator foraging success. Logistic analysis demonstrated a significant fit of our data to a logistic model, from which was calculated the threshold level of plant stem desity necessary to reduce predator foraging success. Studies with various prey species have shown selection by prey for more complex habitats as a refuge from predation. In this stydy, we also examined the effects of increasing habitat complexity (i.e. plant stem density) on choice of habitat by juvenile bluegills while avoiding predation. Plant stem density significantly effected choice of habitat as a refuge. The relationship between increasing habitat complexity and prey choice of habitat was found to be positive and non-linear. As with predator foraging success, logistic analysis demonstrated a significant fit of our data to a logistic model. Using this model we calculated the threshold level of habitat complexity required before prey select a habitat as a refuge. This density of vegetation proved to be considerably higher than that necessary to significantly reduce predator foraging success, indicating that bluegill select habitats safe from predation.Implications of these results and various factors which may affect the relationships described are discussed.  相似文献

We showed previously that p34(cdc2)/cyclin B (MPF) hyperphosphorylates poly(A) polymerase (PAP) during M-phase of the cell cycle, causing repression of its enzymatic activity. Mutation of three cyclin-dependent kinase (cdk) consensus sites in the PAP C-terminal regulatory domain prevented complete phosphorylation and MPF-mediated repression. Here we show that PAP also contains four nearby non-consensus cdk sites that are phosphorylated by MPF. Remarkably, full phosphorylation of all these cdk sites was required for repression of PAP activity, and partial phosphorylation had no detectable effect. The consensus sites were phosphorylated in vitro at a 10-fold lower concentration of MPF than the non-consensus sites. Consistent with this, during meiotic maturation of Xenopus oocytes, consensus sites were phosphorylated prior to the non-consensus sites at metaphase of meiosis I, and remained so throughout maturation, while the non-consensus sites did not become fully phosphorylated until after 12 h of metaphase II arrest. We propose that PAP's multiple cdk sites, and their differential sensitivity to MPF, provide a mechanism to link repression specifically to late M-phase. We discuss the possibility that this reflects a general means to control the timing of cdk-dependent regulatory events during the cell cycle.  相似文献

Synopsis The field component of this study compared feeding preferences of Umbra limi with available resources in the environment. The mudminnows preferred benthic coleopterans, anisopterans, and amphipods while avoiding planktonic and other benthic food types. The laboratory component tested for possible switching behaviour by offering different ratios of two food types (Enchytraeus worms and Culex larvae). Both components indicated a benthic feeding preference in mudminnows. Although preferences were variable across individuals, switching did not occur, a result consistent with recent predictions on predatory behaviour. Feeding patterns reflected individual differences among fish, runs of feeding on one food type, and a constancy in the total number of the two food types eaten.  相似文献

Summary We examined variation in diet choice by marten (Martes americana) among seasons and between sexes and ages from 1980–1985. During this period prey populations crashed simultaneously, except for ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) which was common at the beginning and end of the study, and masked shrews (Sorex cinereus) which were abundant in 1983. Marten were catholic in selection of prey and made use of most available mammalian prey, ruffed grouse, passerine birds, berries, and insects. Diet niche was widest during the latter three years when prey was scare, particularly in late winter. Diet niche breadth was negatively correlated with abundance of all common prey species. Proportion of small prey species in the diet was correlated with absolute abundance of those species, but proportion of some large prey was related to their relative abundance. Diet choice varied among years and among seasons. Berries and insects were common in summer diets while large prey, particularly varying hare (Lepus americanus), were more frequent in winter diet than in summer diet. We found little evidence that any small mammal species was a preferred prey. Sexual size dimorphism between the sexes did not affect prey choice, nor did age. Reduced foraging effort in winter resulted in a wider diet niche only when prey was scarce. The only prediction of optimal foraging models fully supported by our data was a wider diet niche with reduced prey abundance. However, among the three most profitable prey species choice was dependent on the absolute abundance of the most profitable type (varying hare). We suggest that marten primarily forage for large prey but employ a strategy which results in encounters with small prey as well. These small prey are eaten as they provide energy at minimal cost, between captures of large prey.  相似文献

Candidate biomarker proteins, including chaperonin 10 and pyruvate kinase, previously discovered and identified using mass-tagging reagents with multidimensional liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (DeSouza, L.; et al. J. Proteome Res. 2005, 4, 377-386) have been identified in serum-free media of cultured endometrial cancer (KLE and HEC-1-A) and cervical cancer (HeLa) cells. These and other cancer-associated proteins were released by the cultured cells within 24 h of growth. A total of 203 proteins from the KLE cells, 86 from HEC-1-A, and 161 from HeLa are reported.  相似文献

Human intestinal epithelial cell monolayers (Caco-2) subjected to hypoxia and reoxygenation release soluble factors into the apical medium that activate the virulence of the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa to express the potent barrier-dysregulating protein PA-I lectin/adhesin. In this study, we defined the role of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha in this response. We tested the ability of medium from Caco-2 cells with forced expression of HIF-1alpha to increase PA-I expression in P. aeruginosa and found that medium from Caco-2 cells overexpressing HIF-1alpha increased PA-I expression compared with medium from control cells (P < 0.001, ANOVA). To identify the components responsible for this response, medium was fractionated by molecular weight and subjected to mass spectroscopy, which identified adenosine as the possible mediator. Both adenosine and its immediate downstream metabolite inosine induced PA-I expression in P. aeruginosa in a dose-dependent fashion. Because inosine was not detectable in the medium of Caco-2 cells exposed to hypoxia or overexpressing HIF-1alpha, we hypothesized that P. aeruginosa itself might metabolize adenosine to inosine. Using mutant and parental strains of P. aeruginosa, we demonstrated that P. aeruginosa metabolized adenosine to inosine via adenosine deaminase and that the conditioned medium enhanced the extracellular accumulation of inosine. Together, these results provide evidence that P. aeruginosa can recognize and respond to extracellular end products of intestinal hypoxia that are released after activation of HIF-1alpha. The ability of P. aeruginosa to metabolize adenosine to inosine may represent a subversive microbial virulence strategy that deprives the epithelium of the cytoprotective actions of adenosine.  相似文献

This paper looked at the leaf architecture characteristics of Vachellia tortilis to determine if either there is or not an effect of the tropic line on plants. Vachellia tortilis leaves were sampled along a national road (N1) in Limpopo province. Sampling points were set 10 km apart away from the Tropic of Capricon in opposite directions. Leaf morphology revealed that leaves of V. tortilis are bipinnately compound with alternate arrangement. The venation pattern of the pinnules was eucamptodromus and brochidodromous with imperfect reticulation. Areoles were imperfect and pentagonal or irregular in shape.  相似文献
