Synopsis We investigated the ability of two congeneric species of sunfish to learn to forage on a novel prey item in feeding arenas containing structured habitats. Eight bluegill sunfish and eight pumpkinseed sunfish were given the opportunity to forage on whiteworms daily for 10 days. Each day, several behavioural measures were recorded for each fish. Both species of sunfish learned to feed over the 10-day period but the bluegill sunfish learned to feed more quickly than the pumpkinseed sunfish. Pumpkinseeds, however, attained a higher level of foraging efficiency. The differences in learning and foraging efficiency were related to body morphology.  相似文献

Xenogeneic transplantation of ovarian cortex into an immunodeficient animal host may be an approach toward fertility preservation for young female patients undergoing cancer therapy. Our objective was to evaluate the development of follicles in human ovarian cortex placed s.c. in non-obese diabetic-severe combined immune deficiency (NOD-SCID) mice (n = 54). The following variables were compared: 1) male versus female mice as hosts, 2) intact versus pituitary down-regulated mice, and 3) warm versus cold tissue transport. After 2 wk, 37 of 50 (74%) of the human xenografts contained follicles. At 12 wk after transplantation, exogenous gonadotropin stimulation resulted in follicle growth in 19 of 37 (51%) of the grafts, including the development of antral follicles, which could be palpated and visualized through the mouse skin. Significantly more developing follicles were identified in male versus female mice (13 of 17 vs. 6 of 20, respectively; p = 0.013) after stimulation. No difference was found between intact and pituitary down-regulated mice as hosts. Follicular survival was significantly increased by warm versus cold tissue transport. Our results suggest that s.c. ovarian cortex xenografting into NOD-SCID mice is feasible. Primordial follicles in ovarian xenografts retain their developmental potential and form antral follicles following gonadotropin stimulation.  相似文献

Synopsis Young-of-the-year largemouth bass,Micropterus salmoides, were exposed to four concentrations of sulphuric acid (pH levels 7.2, 6.1, 4.8, and 3.7) for 30 days, and the frequencies of feeding acts and activity bouts, and time budgets were recorded. Juveniles at pH 6.1 and at pH 4.8 performed the two feeding acts, bites and orientations, more often, and spent more time feeding than bass at pH 7.2. Bass at pH 3.7, however, reduced feeding, and spent a significantly larger portion of their time hovering in the water column. Frequencies of comfort and agonistic acts increased with a decline in pH. Alterations of behavioural repertoires of young-of-the-year largemouth bass were useful indicators of sulphuric acid exposure.  相似文献

The bivalve family Corbulidae, known colloquially as ‘basket clams’, includes species tolerating a wide variety of habitats ranging from open marine to freshwater. Previous studies of corbulid phylogenetics have been based mainly on shell morphology and to some extent soft tissue anatomy. However, these studies have been inadequate for corbulid classification because of difficulties in determining the inter‐relationships of primarily marine species with non‐marine species, the latter commonly exhibiting highly divergent morphological, ecological and environmental characteristics from their marine counterparts. The first molecular phylogenetic study of the Corbulidae is presented herein, analysing DNA sequences from the 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA genes, separately and in combination. Fifteen corbulid species and 14 outgroup taxa were included in the analyses. Corbulidae is resolved as monophyletic, comprising three groups with varying support. The non‐marine species form one group that we name as the subclade ‘limnetic–euryhaline Corbulidae’ (LEC) and comprising the genera Lentidium, Erodona and Potamocorbula. This LEC, which is consistently recovered as monophyletic, is globally distributed. The marine Corbulidae are divided into two well‐supported lineages in combined analyses although there are inconsistencies in their membership between single‐gene analyses. One of the two lineages consists of primarily Western Pacific taxa and the other of North American and Caribbean taxa. Finally, the authors advocate further study on the LEC to mitigate potential biological invasions beyond their native distribution.  相似文献

Pulmonate snails occupy a wide range of marine, estuarine, freshwater and terrestrial environments. Non-terrestrial forms are supposed to be basal in pulmonate evolution but the group's phylogeny is not well resolved either morphologically or on the basis of available DNA sequence data. The lack of a robust phylogeny makes it difficult to understand character polarization and habitat transformation in pulmonates. We have investigated pulmonate relationships using 27 new sequences of 28S rRNA from pulmonates and outgroups, augmented with data from GenBank. The complete alignments comprised about 3.8kb. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of alignments generated under different assumptions are reported. Complete alignments appear to have a degree of substitution saturation so where there is conflict between hypothesised relationships more weight is given to analyses where regions of random similarity are excluded and which are not affected by this complication. Monophyly of the five main pulmonate groups was robustly supported in almost all analyses. The marine group Amphiboloidea and the freshwater Glacidorbidae are the most basal. The remaining pulmonates (Siphonariidae, Hygrophila and Eupulmonata) form a moderately-supported monophyletic group in all analyses bar one probably affected by saturation of substitutions. Siphonariidae, a predominantly marine and intertidal family, and Eupulmonata (mainly terrestrial with marine, estuarine and freshwater species) form a strongly supported clade that is the sister group to Hygrophila (freshwater). Multiple colonizations of freshwater and terrestrial habitats by pulmonate snails are suggested. No analyses strongly support the possibility of habitat reversions. The colonizations of freshwater by Hygrophila and of land by Stylommatophora were apparently phylogenetically independent although it cannot yet be excluded that there were transient terrestrial phases in the history of the former group or freshwater phases in the latter.  相似文献

The tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily mediates signals critical for regulation of the immune system. One family member, CD40, is important for the efficient activation of antibody-producing B cells and other antigen-presenting cells. The molecules and mechanisms that mediate CD40 signaling are only partially characterized. Proteins known to interact with the cytoplasmic domain of CD40 include members of the TNF receptor-associated factor (TRAF) family, which regulate signaling and serve as links to other signaling molecules. To identify additional proteins important for CD40 signaling, we used a combined stimulation/immunoprecipitation procedure to isolate CD40 signaling complexes from B cells and characterized the associated proteins by mass spectrometry. In addition to known CD40-interacting proteins, we detected SMAC/DIABLO, HTRA2/Omi, and HOIP/RNF31/PAUL/ZIBRA. We found that these previously unknown CD40-interacting partners were recruited in a TRAF2-dependent manner. HOIP is a ubiquitin ligase capable of mediating NF-κB activation through the ubiquitin-dependent activation of IKKγ. We found that a mutant HOIP molecule engineered to lack ubiquitin ligase activity inhibited the CD40-mediated activation of NF-κB. Together, our results demonstrate a powerful approach for the identification of signaling molecules associated with cell surface receptors and indicate an important role for the ubiquitin ligase activity of HOIP in proximal CD40 signaling.  相似文献
