The paired organ of Bellonci protrudes from the optic lobe of the giant Antarctic isopod, Glyptonotus antarcticus. It is linked to the cortex by a broad peduncle. No connection to the cuticle or “sensory pore organ” was found. A cluster of sensory-like cells forms two outer ciliary segments branching into numerous microvilli with microtubules. The putative sensory somata are irregular in shape and contain a very high density of glycogen granules. The two outer segments sprout from two pits of the soma in different directions, forming a right angle. Glial cells wrap around the sensory cells and also delimit lacunae into which bundles of microvilli project. These lacunae contain electron-dense granules of small size and with species-specific patterns. Lacunae and dense granules show features typical of a degeneration process in the sensory cells. This general morphology corresponds to the unilobular type of organ of Bellonci, known in other isopods; it differs from the plurilobular type with onion bodies found in other Crustacea.  相似文献

Relationships between food stealing and exploitation of main food sources were investigated in the German cockroach,Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae). The occurrence of food stealing during food exploitation was associated with the course of depletion of the main food sources and not with spatial distribution or distance from shelter. Stolen pieces of food always appeared towards the end of exploitation of a food source. Their occurrence appeared to be a consequence of the exploitation of a food source rather than a specific strategy. The proportion of animals of different developmental stages observed with stolen pieces differed significantly from that in the general population. There were proportionally more males, females and large larvae and proportionally less small larvae with stolen pieces than on the main food source. These data suggest that stolen pieces appeared when competition for access to food increased, and that larger cockroaches (adults and larger larvae) were then dominant and benefited from monopolizing stolen pieces of food.  相似文献

Hereditary Elliptocytosis (HE) is a hemolytic disorder inherited as autosomal-dominant trait and characterized by elliptically shaped erythrocytes. Preliminary studies in France have showed a high proportion of HE patients of black extraction (West Africa and Antilles). In order to confirm this prevalence, we made a systematic search for HE in West Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Togo. The diagnosis of elliptocytosis was established by the observation of a high percentage (greater than 70%) of characteristic regular and symmetric elliptic red cells after fixation in 0.3% glutaraldehyde saline buffer. The diagnosis of HE was confirmed by cytological studies of related members and/or the discovery of a well defined molecular variant of spectrin, the main protein of erythrocyte membrane skeleton. We found: in Abidjan centre 6 HE out of 1,000 subjects representative of main ethnic groups; in Lome Centre 6 cases out of 750 subjects originated from the South or Central areas of Togo; in Cotonou Centre 5 cases out of 1,000 subjects originated from the South area of Benin; in Bobo Dioulasso centre 6 HE out of 700 subjects. From this multicentre studies HE appears roughly 10 times more frequent in West Africa than in Europe or USA where incidence was estimated at between 2.5 and 5 cases per 10,000. Tryptic digestion of spectrin revealed that: 10 patients from different ethnic groups have the most frequent variant found in our laboratory (21 kindreds) and named spectrin alpha I/65. Five cases originated from limited areas in the South of Benin and Togo and related to closed ethnic groups have the variant Sp alpha I/46.  相似文献

Wood falls on the ocean floor form chemosynthetic ecosystems that remain poorly studied compared with features such as hydrothermal vents or whale falls. In particular, the microbes forming the base of this unique ecosystem are not well characterized and the ecology of communities is not known. Here we use wood as a model to study microorganisms that establish and maintain a chemosynthetic ecosystem. We conducted both aquaria and in situ deep-sea experiments to test how different environmental constraints structure the assembly of bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities. We also measured changes in wood lipid concentrations and monitored sulfide production as a way to detect potential microbial activity. We show that wood falls are dynamic ecosystems with high spatial and temporal community turnover, and that the patterns of microbial colonization change depending on the scale of observation. The most illustrative example was the difference observed between pine and oak wood community dynamics. In pine, communities changed spatially, with strong differences in community composition between wood microhabitats, whereas in oak, communities changed more significantly with time of incubation. Changes in community assembly were reflected by changes in phylogenetic diversity that could be interpreted as shifts between assemblies ruled by species sorting to assemblies structured by competitive exclusion. These ecological interactions followed the dynamics of the potential microbial metabolisms accompanying wood degradation in the sea. Our work showed that wood is a good model for creating and manipulating chemosynthetic ecosystems in the laboratory, and attracting not only typical chemosynthetic microbes but also emblematic macrofaunal species.  相似文献

The model of Kok et al. (Kok, B., Forbush, B. and McGloin, M. (1970) Photochem. Photobiol. 11, 457–475) is considered the best kinetic explanation of the damped oscillations of O2 evolution induced in higher plants by a sequence of brief saturating flashes. Matrix analysis applied to this model shows that the parameters involved (distribution of S states at zero time, probabilities of transition between states induced by a flash) cannot be completely known from the O2 yield sequence, Yn. However, four quantities, with limited content of information, are readily derived from data, without additional assumptions. They are σ1, σ2 and σ3, three quasi-symmetrical functions of the transition coefficients, and Y, a weighed average of four consecutive Yn values. The extent of misses and double hits and their variations can be qualitatively ascertained by inspection of the relative values of σ1, σ2 and σ3. In a regular sequence (strictly obeying Kok's model), all four quantities should be constant along the time axis.It is shown that actual sequences are seldom regular, in particular in the following conditions: (1) variable flashing frequency, (2) addition of carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, (3) incomplete deactivation, (4) change of flashing frequency at steady state.In order to account for these anomalies, it is proposed to modify Kok's model by introducing, in parallel to the four state storage entity (S states), a side carrier C, which can reversibly exchange a positive charge with it. In the new model, the transition coefficients are essentially time varying, thus producing a nonregular behaviour of Yn sequences.  相似文献

Summary A new technique for obtaining axenic meat is described. The procedure is based on the use of a liquid peracetic acid lock united with two isolators, permanently connected together. After immersion in a 3% solution of peracetic acid for 2 min, the surfaces of muscles obtained from pig, horse and cattle were shown to be completely decontaminated. Such meats appeared perfectly fit for gnotobiotic studies in the field of meat microbiology.  相似文献

Summary TYMV-dsRNA has been studied by ORD and CD. The spectra indicate a highly ordered secondary structure which disappears upon heating or titrating to acid pH. No distinct acid structure as found for DNA could be observed.Melting profiles of TYMV-dsRNA show a strong dependence on ionic strength which is analogous to synthetic polynucleotide complexes. Upon storage for several months the melting points drop considerably, without change in the ORD spectra. The two sets of melting points obtained for TYMV-dsRNA compare well with the results obtained in the literature: two series of melting points have been found for ds-RNA of a wide variety of origins. If plotted as a function of their G-C content, these data fall on two different lines with different slopes.It is suggested that ds-RNA might exist in two different helical forms and that TYMV-dsRNA might undergo a conformational change in solution upon storage.Boursier du Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique.  相似文献

Eosinophils are major players in inflammatory allergic diseases such as asthma, hay fever and eczema. Here we show that the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (CDKi) R-roscovitine efficiently and rapidly induces human eosinophil apoptosis using flow cytometric analysis of annexin-V/propidium iodide staining, morphological analysis by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Western immunoblotting for caspase-3 cleavage. We further dissect these observations by demonstrating that eosinophils treated with R-roscovitine lose mitochondrial membrane potential and the key survival protein Mcl-1 is down-regulated. This novel finding of efficacious induction of eosinophil apoptosis by CDKi drugs has potential as a strategy for driving resolution of eosinophilic inflammation.  相似文献
