Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rare in New World primates. We report the gross, microscopical, and immunocytochemical features of a spontaneous HCC in a free‐living marmoset (Callithrix sp.). Hepatitis B and C virus and aflatoxin immunohistochemistry were negative; however, concomitant intra‐ and extrahepatic biliary trematodiasis could have played a role.  相似文献

Effects of resveratrol on glycerol-induced renal injury   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Glycerol-induced renal lesions can have many causes, including increased oxidative stress and inflammation. Resveratrol, a polyphenolic phytoalexin found in grapes and red wine, is an antioxidant agent with anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, we investigated the possible protective effect of resveratrol on glycerol-induced nephrotoxicity. Male Wistar rats were injected intramuscularly with 8 ml/kg of either 50% glycerol (n=18), glycerol+resveratrol (n=22), 0.15 M saline (n=14), saline+carboxymethylcellulose (n=10) or saline+resveratrol (n=8). The rats were killed 3 days after the injections, at which time the kidneys were removed for histological and immunohistochemical studies and lipid peroxidation determination. Blood and urine samples were collected in order to quantify sodium and creatinine. The results of the histological and immunohistochemical studies were scored according to the extent of damage and immunostaining, respectively, in the cortical tubulointerstitium. Lipid peroxidation was estimated by measuring malondialdehyde in renal tissue samples collected from control rats and glycerol-injected rats. By postinjection day 3, glycerol-only treated rats presented increases in plasma creatinine levels, as well as in fractional excretion of sodium and potassium (P<0.001). These increases were less pronounced in glycerol+resveratrol-treated rats (P<0.05). Cortical expression of macrophages, lymphocytes, nuclear factor-kappa B, heme oxygenase-1 and nitrotyrosine was greater in glycerol-treated rats than in controls (P<0.001). In addition, the histological findings for glycerol-treated rats were characteristic of acute tubular necrosis. Resveratrol attenuated all of these alterations (P<0.001). We conclude that resveratrol ameliorates glycerol-induced renal injury by suppressing the inflammatory process and by inhibiting lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to assess and compare the removal efficiency of paracetamol and salicylic acid from aqueous medium by a microalgae-based treatment, using either Chlorella vulgaris or Tetradesmus obliquus. Moreover, considering microalgae application in wastewater treatment, the influence of these pharmaceuticals in the algal nutrient removal capacity was evaluated. The removal of paracetamol by T. obliquus (>40 %) was larger than by C. vulgaris (>21 %) in batch culture, and this was also observed for salicylic acid (>93 % by T. obliquus and >25 % by C. vulgaris). Both strains removed nutrients (phosphate and nitrate) almost completely by the end of the batch culture, but T. obliquus showed the highest efficiency at the steady state conditions of the semicontinuous culture. In spite of this, under the flocculants here tested, the efficiency in the recovery of biomass was much higher for C. vulgaris. These results highlight the importance of strain selection in the application of microalgae for wastewater treatment and, particularly, for the removal of pharmaceuticals.  相似文献

A total of 94 individuals from the Xavante village of Rio das Mortes were variously studied in relation to 28 protein genetic systems. No variation was observed for 15 of them, in accordance with previous studies. Of the remaining 13, four (Rh, Duffy, acid phosphatase, and GC) showed significant departures from the averages obtained in 32 other South American Indian populations. If studies performed in the 1960s are considered, there is indication that no significant changes in this village's gene pool has occurred in the last 30 years. Comparison with two other Xavante populations included nine systems with variation, and for three of them (MNSs, Rh, and Duffy) significant differences were found. Genetically the Rio das Mortes are closer to the São Marcos than to the Simões Lopes Xavantes. A dendrogram considering 25 genetic systems and 33 South American Indian populations was constructed. There the Xavante were grouped together, in two neighboring clusters, with three other tribes who speak Ge languages. But these clusters also present populations who speak other languages, and the reproducibility of the tree is low. The effectiveness of crystalline alpha-amylase and saliva in hydrolyzing newly formed glycogen in liver and muscle was examined. Glycogen synthesis was induced by the administration of H3-glucose to fasting rats or by the incubation of tissue slices in a medium containing H3-glucose. Paraffin sections of Rossman-fixed tissues or small pieces of liver fixed in glutaraldehyde and subsequently postosmicated and embedded in Epon were then enzymatically digested. Grain counts were made in radioautographs of treated and untreated materials, and the amount of radioactivity removed by the digestion was used to assess the efficiency of the enzymes in hydrolyzing glycogen. Crystalline alpha-amylase hydrolyzed almost completely newly formed glycogen in liver and muscle. Saliva removed the glycogen that was synthesized in vivo, but it was less effective in hydrolyzing glycogen synthesized in vitro. Electron micrographs of digested liver cells confirmed the radioautographic findings on the effectiveness of the enzyme preparations.  相似文献

The weatherloach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, is a freshwater, facultative air-breathing fish that lives in streams and rice paddy fields, where it may experience drought and/or high environmental ammonia (HEA) conditions. The aim of this study was to determine what roles branchial Na+/K+-ATPase, H+-ATPase, and Rhcg have in ammonia tolerance and how the weatherloach copes with ammonia loading conditions. The loach's high ammonia tolerance was confirmed as was evident from its high 96 h LC50 value and high tissue tolerance to ammonia. The weatherloach does not appear to make use of Na+/NH4+-ATPase facilitated transport to excrete ammonia when exposed to HEA or to high environmental pH since no changes in activity were observed. Using immunofluorescence microscopy, distinct populations of vacuolar (V)-type H+-ATPase and Na+/K+-ATPase immunoreactive cells were identified in branchial epithelia, with apical and basolateral staining patterns, respectively. Rhesus C glycoprotein (Rhcg1), an ammonia transport protein, immunoreactivity was also found in a similar pattern as H+-ATPase. Rhcg1 (Slc42a3) mRNA expression also increased significantly during aerial exposure, although not significantly under ammonia loading conditions. The colocalization of H+-ATPase and Rhcg1 to the similar non-Na+/K+-ATPase immunoreactive cell type would support a role for H+-ATPase in ammonia excretion via Rhcg by NH4+ trapping. The importance of gill boundary layer acidification in net ammonia excretion was confirmed in this fish; however, it was not associated with an increase in H+-ATPase expression, since tissue activity and protein levels did not increase with high environmental pH and/or HEA. However the V-ATPase inhibitor, bafilomycin, did decrease net ammonia flux whereas other ion transport inhibitors (amiloride, SITS) had no effect. H+-ATPase inhibition also resulted in a consequent elevation in plasma ammonia levels and a decrease in the net acid flux. In gill, aerial exposure was also associated with a significant increase in membrane fluidity (or increase in permeability) which would presumably enhance NH3 permeation through the plasma membrane. Taken together, these results indicate the gill of the weatherloach is responsive to aerial conditions that would aid ammonia excretion.  相似文献
