The purpose of this review is to examine the literature that has investigated the potential relationship between mechanomyographic (MMG) frequency and motor unit firing rates. Several different experimental designs/methodologies have been used to address this issue, including: repetitive electrical stimulation, voluntary muscle actions in muscles with different fiber type compositions, fatiguing and non-fatiguing isometric or dynamic muscle actions, and voluntary muscle actions in young versus elderly subjects and healthy individuals versus subjects with a neuromuscular disease(s). Generally speaking, the results from these investigations have suggested that MMG frequency is related to the rate of motor unit activation and the contractile properties (contraction and relaxation times) of the muscle fibers. Other studies, however, have reported that MMG mean power frequency (MPF) does not always follow the expected pattern of firing rate modulation (e.g. motor unit firing rates generally increase with torque during isometric muscle actions, but MMG MPF may remain stable or even decrease). In addition, there are several factors that may affect the frequency content of the MMG signal during a voluntary muscle action (i.e. muscle stiffness, intramuscular fluid pressure, etc.), independent of changes in motor unit firing rates. Despite the potential influences of these factors, most of the evidence has suggested that the frequency domain of the MMG signal contains some information regarding motor unit firing rates. It is likely, however, that this information is qualitative, rather than quantitative in nature, and reflects the global motor unit firing rate, rather than the firing rates of a particular group of motor units. 相似文献

Blossom-bats, Syconycteris australis (18 g) are known to be highly active throughout the night. Since this species frequently enters torpor, we postulated that
their use of heterothermy may be related to a high energy expenditure in the field. To test this hypothesis we measured field
metabolic rates (FMR) of S. australis at a subtropical site using the doubly labelled water (DLW) method. We also measured DLW turnover in captive animals held
at constant ambient temperature (T
a) with ad libitum food to estimate whether T
a and food availability affect energy expenditure under natural conditions. The FMR of S. australis was 8.55 ml CO2 g−1 h−1 or 76.87 kJ day−1 which is 7.04 times the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and one of the highest values reported for endotherms to date. Mass-specific
energy expenditure by bats in the laboratory was about two-thirds of that of bats in the field, but some of this difference
was explained by the greater body mass in captive bats. This suggests that foraging times in the field and laboratory were
similar, and daily energy expenditure was not strongly affected by T
a or ad libitum food. Water uptake in the field was significantly higher than in the laboratory, most likely because nectar
contained more water than the laboratory diet. Our study shows that S. australis has a FMR that is about double that predicted for its size although its BMR is lower than predicted. This supports the view
that caution must be used in making assumptions from measurements of BMR in the laboratory about energy and other biological
requirements in free-ranging animals.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 2 days of isokinetic training of the forearm flexors and extensors on strength and electromyographic (EMG) amplitude for the agonist and antagonist muscles. Seventeen men (mean +/- SD age = 21.9 +/- 2.8 years) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: (a) a training group (TRN; n = 8), or (b) a control group (CTL; n = 9). The subjects in the TRN group were tested for maximal isometric and concentric isokinetic (randomly ordered velocities of 60, 180, and 300 degrees x s(-1)) torque of the dominant forearm flexors and extensors before (pretest) and after (posttest) 2 days of isokinetic strength training. Each training session involved 6 sets of 10 maximal concentric isokinetic muscle actions of the forearm flexors and extensors at a velocity of 180 degrees x s(-1). The subjects in the CTL group were also tested for strength but did not perform any training. Surface EMG signals were detected from the biceps brachii and triceps brachii muscles during the strength testing. The results indicated that there were no significant (p > 0.05) pre- to post-test changes in forearm flexion and extension torque or EMG amplitude for the agonist and antagonist muscles. Thus, unlike previous studies of the quadriceps femoris muscles, these findings for the forearm flexors and extensors suggested that 2 days of isokinetic training may not be sufficient to elicit significant increases in strength. These results may have implications for the number of visits that are required for rehabilitation after injury, surgery, or both. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of interelectrode distance (IED) on the absolute and normalized electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) versus isokinetic and isometric torque relationships for the biceps brachii muscle. Ten adults [mean+/-SD age=22.0+/-3.4 years] performed submaximal to maximal, isokinetic and isometric muscle actions of the dominant forearm flexors. Following determination of isokinetic peak torque (PT) and the isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), the subjects performed randomly ordered, submaximal step muscle actions in 10% increments from 10% to 90% PT and MVC. Surface EMG signals were recorded simultaneously from bipolar electrode arrangements placed over the biceps brachii muscle with IEDs of 20, 40, and 60mm. Absolute and normalized EMG amplitude (muVrms and %max) increased linearly with torque during the isokinetic and isometric muscle actions (r(2) range=0.988-0.998), but there were no significant changes for absolute or normalized EMG MPF (Hz or %max) from 10% to 100% PT and MVC. In some cases, there were significant (p<0.05) differences among the three IED arrangements for absolute EMG amplitude and MPF values, but not for the normalized values. These findings suggested that for the biceps brachii muscle, IEDs between 20 and 60mm resulted in similar patterns for the EMG amplitude or MPF versus dynamic and isometric torque relationships. Furthermore, unlike the absolute EMG amplitude and MPF values, the normalized EMG data were not influenced by changes in IED between 20 and 60mm. Thus, normalized EMG data can be compared among previous studies that have utilized different IED arrangements. 相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the validity of the non-exercise-based equations of Davis et al. (13), Jones et al. (20), and Neder et al. (30) for estimating the ventilatory threshold (VT) in samples of aerobically trained men and women. One hundred and forty-four aerobically trained men (mean +/- SD age, 41.0 +/- 11.6 years; N = 83) and women (37.1 +/- 9.0 years, N = 61) performed a maximal incremental test to determine VO2max and observed VT on a cycle ergometer. The observed VT was determined by gas exchange measurements using the V-slope method (VCO2/VO2) in conjunction with analyses of the ventilatory equivalents (i.e., minute ventilation VE/VO2 and VE/VCO2) and end-tidal gas tensions (i.e., P(ET)O2 and P(ET)CO2) for oxygen and carbon dioxide. The predicted VT values from 14 equations were compared to the observed VT values by examining the constant error (CE), standard error of estimate (SEE), Pearson correlation coefficient (r), and total error (TE). The results of this investigation indicated that all 14 equations resulted in significant (p < 0.008) CE values ranging from 1.13 to 1.72 L x min(-1) for the men and from 0.58 to 1.12 L x min(-1) for the women. Furthermore, the SEE, r, and TE values ranged from 0.37 to 0.54, from 0.36 to 0.53, and from 0.68 to 1.81 L x min(-1), respectively. The lowest TE values for the men and women represented 45 and 36% of the mean of the observed VT values, respectively. The results of this study indicated that the errors associated with all 14 equations were too large to be of practical value for estimating VT in aerobically trained men and women. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if an active warm-up affects peak torque (PT), rate of torque development (RTD), and the electromyographic (EMG) and mechanomyographic (MMG) signals. Twenty-one men (mean age ± SD: 24.0 ± 2.7 years) visited the exercise physiology laboratory on 2 occasions. During the first visit, they either performed an active warm-up (10 minutes of stationary cycling at 70% of predicted maximum heart rate) or sat quietly (no warm-up). Participants were then tested for isometric and isokinetic (60°, 180°, and 300°·s) PT, and RTD (measured as S-gradient) on an isokinetic dynamometer. Electromyographic and MMG sensors were placed over the vastus lateralis muscle to monitor the electrical and mechanical aspects of muscle contractions, respectively. The testing protocol used for the first visit was repeated for the second visit, but the preexercise treatment (warm-up, no warm-up) not given during the first visit was administered. The results indicated that an active warm-up did not affect PT, RTD, or measures of muscle activation as reflected by EMG amplitude, EMG frequency, or MMG frequency (p > 0.05). However, MMG amplitude at 180°·s was significantly greater in the warm-up condition compared with the no warm-up condition. The isolated increase in MMG amplitude suggested that warm-up may have affected the mechanical properties of muscle by reducing muscular stiffness or decreasing intramuscular fluid pressure, but that it was not sufficient to influence performance. 相似文献

We developed a method for extracting raft-like, liquid-ordered membranes from the particulate fraction prepared from porcine trachealis smooth muscle. This fraction, which contains most of the plasma membrane in this tissue, was homogenized in the presence of cold 0.5% Triton X-100. After centrifugation, membranes containing high contents of sphingomyelin (SM) and cholesterol and low phosphatidylcholine (PC) contents remained in the pellet. Thirty-five millimolar octyl glucoside (OG) extracted 75% of these membranes from the Triton X-100-resistant pellet. These membranes had low buoyant densities and accounted for 28% of the particulate fraction lipid. Their lipid composition, 22% SM, 60% cholesterol, 11% phosphatidylethanolamine, 8% PC, <1% phosphatidylinositol, and coisolation with 5'-nucleotidase and caveolin-1 suggest that they are liquid-ordered membranes. We compared characteristics of OG and Triton X-100 extractions of the particulate fraction. In contrast to Triton X-100 extractions, membranes released from the particulate fraction by OG were mainly collected in low buoyant fractions at densities ranging from 1.05 to 1.11 g/ml and had phospholipid and cholesterol contents consistent with a mixture of liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered membranes. Thus, OG extraction of apparent liquid-ordered membranes from Triton X-100-resistant pellets was not due to selective extraction of these membranes. Low buoyant density appears not to be unique for liquid-ordered membranes. 相似文献

Thrombin-inhibitor X-ray crystal structures, in combination with the installation of binding elements optimized within the pyrazinone series of thrombin inhibitors, were utilized to transform a weak triazolopyrimidine lead into a series of potent oxazolopyridines. A modification intended to attenuate plasma protein binding (i.e., conversion of the P3 pyridine to a piperidine) conferred significant factor Xa activity to this series. Ultimately, these dual thrombin/factor Xa inhibitors demonstrated excellent in vitro and in vivo anticoagulant efficacy. 相似文献
