Climate change vulnerability assessments (CCVAs) are important tools to plan for and mitigate potential impacts of climate change. However, CCVAs often lack scientific rigor, which can ultimately lead to poor conservation prioritization and associated ecological and economic costs. Plants synthesize an array of natural products that play diverse roles in growth, development, and defense. The plant-specific phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway produces as some of its major products flavonoids, monolignols, and hydroxycinnamic- acid conjugates. The reduced epidermal fluorescence 4 (ref4) mutant is partially dwarfed and accumulates reduced quantities of all phenylpropanoid-pathway end products. Further, plants heterozygous for ref4 exhibit intermediate growth and phenylpropanoid-related phenotypes, suggesting that these mutations are semidominant. The REF4 locus (At2g48110) was cloned by a combined map- and sequencing-based approach and was found to encode a large integral membrane protein that is unique to plants. The mutations in all ref4 alleles cause substitutions in conserved amino acids that are located adjacent to predicted transmembrane regions. Expression of the ref4-3 allele in wild-type and null REF4 plants caused reductions in sinapoylmalate content, lignin content, and growth, demonstrating that the mutant alleles are truly semidominant. The effects of sulfate on the population dynamics of an anaerobic hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX)-degrading consortium were studied using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis. One hundred percent of the initial RDX was degraded in the sulfate-amended culture within 3 days of incubation. In the sulfate-unamended cultures, 35% of the initial RDX remained after 3 days and 8% after 7 days of incubation. Based on the T-RFLP distribution of the community 16S rDNA genes, the microcosm consisted predominantly of two organisms, a Geobacter sp. (78%) and an Acetobacterium sp. (14%). However, in the presence of sulfate, both species decreased to less than 3% of the total population within 3 days and an unclassified Clostridiaceae became the dominant organism at 40% the total fragment distribution. This indicated the explosive-degrading consortium had greater diversity than initially perceived and rapidly adapted to a readily available electron acceptor, which in turn stimulated RDX degradation. 相似文献

Over the last decades a variety of research has been conducted with the goal to improve the Body Segment Inertial Parameters (BSIP) estimations but to our knowledge a real validation has never been completely successful, because no ground truth is available. The aim of this paper is to propose a validation method for a BSIP identification method (IM) and to confirm the results by comparing them with recalculated contact forces using inverse dynamics to those obtained by a force plate. Furthermore, the results are compared with the recently proposed estimation method by Dumas et al. (2007). Additionally, the results are cross validated with a high velocity overarm throwing movement. Throughout conditions higher correlations, smaller metrics and smaller RMSE can be found for the proposed BSIP estimation (IM) which shows its advantage compared to recently proposed methods as of Dumas et al. (2007). The purpose of the paper is to validate an already proposed method and to show that this method can be of significant advantage compared to conventional methods. 相似文献

To examine the potential use of synthesis gas as a carbon and energy source in fermentation processes, Rhodospirillum rubrum was cultured on synthesis gas generated from discarded seed corn. The growth rates, growth and poly-beta-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) yields, and CO oxidation/H(2) evolution rates were evaluated in comparison to the rates observed with an artificial synthesis gas mixture. Depending on the gas conditioning system used, synthesis gas either stimulated or inhibited CO-oxidation rates compared to the observations with the artificial synthesis gas mixture. Inhibitory and stimulatory compounds in synthesis gas could be removed by the addition of activated charcoal, char-tar, or char-ash filters (char, tar, and ash are gasification residues). In batch fermentations, approximately 1.4 mol CO was oxidized per day per g cell protein with the production of 0.75 mol H(2) and 340 mg PHA per day per g cell protein. The PHA produced from R. rubrum grown on synthesis gas was composed of 86% beta-hydroxybutyrate and 14% beta-hydroxyvalerate. Visual opsins bind 11-cis retinal at an orthosteric site to form rhodopsins but increasing evidence suggests that at least some are capable of binding an additional retinoid(s) at a separate, allosteric site(s). Microspectrophotometric measurements on isolated, dark-adapted, salamander photoreceptors indicated that the truncated retinal analog, β-ionone, partitioned into the membranes of green-sensitive rods; however, in blue-sensitive rod outer segments, there was an enhanced uptake of four or more β-ionones per rhodopsin. X-ray crystallography revealed binding of one β-ionone to bovine green-sensitive rod rhodopsin. Cocrystallization only succeeded with extremely high concentrations of β-ionone and binding did not alter the structure of rhodopsin from the inactive state. Salamander green-sensitive rod rhodopsin is also expected to bind β-ionone at sufficiently high concentrations because the binding site is present on its surface. Therefore, both blue- and green-sensitive rod rhodopsins have at least one allosteric binding site for retinoid, but β-ionone binds to the latter type of rhodopsin with low affinity and low efficacy. 相似文献
