Moissette, P. & Saint Martin, J:P. 1995 11 30 Bryozoaires des milieux récifaux miocenes du sillon sud-rifain au Maroc. [Bryozoans from Miocene reef environments in the South-Rifian corridor of Morocco. In late Miocene coral reefs from the Fes area (Northern Morocco), bryozoans are the best-represented group. An inventory of the bryozoan fauna (59 species) was taken on two reefs with different organization and palaeogeographical situation in a late Miocene seaway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. A study of the bryozoans and their zoarial forms allows an improved reconstruction of reefal environments and available habitats. Membraniporiforrn (encrusting) colonies largely predominate, whereas celleporiforms (nodular colonies) are more rare. Rigid erect (vinculariiform, adeoniform, and reteporiform) and rigid articulated zoarial types (cellariiform and catenicelliform) are fairly well represented. At depths of about 10 m and on the reef front encrusting bryozoans were well developed in cryptic habitats on living coral substrates. Erect species lived in cavities provided by the coral framework, and plants offered flexible substrates for the attachment of epiphytal forms. □Bryozoa, coral reefs, Morocco, Messininn, pulueoecology. Dans les récifs coralliens du Miocène supérieur de la région de Fes (Maroc septentrional), les bryozoaires constituent, parrni les organismes conservés, le groupe le mieux représenté. Un recensement de la fame de bryozoaires (59 espèces) a été effectué dans deux récifs d'organisation et de situation paléogéographique différentes, dans un secteur de communication entre Atlantique et Méditerranée au MiocéFne supérieur. L'étude des bryozoaires et de leurs formes zoariales permet de proposer une meilleure reconstitution de I'environnement récifal et des habitats disponibles. Les colonies membraniporiformes (encrobtantes) predominent largement, alors que les cellepori-formes (colonies noduleuses) sont beaucoup plus rares. Les types zoariaux érigés rigides (vincula-riiforme, adéoniforme et rétéporiforme) et érigés articulés (cellariiforme et catenicelliforme) sont assez bien représentés. A des profondeurs denviron 10 m et dans la partie antérieure des constructions récifales, les bryozoaires encroûtants étaient bien développés dans des habitats cryptiques sur substrats coralliens vivants. Column‐scale oil flushing of a sandy loam contaminated with either Pb(II) (500 mg/kg Pb), PbSO4 (10,000 mg/kg Pb), PbCO3 (10,000 mg/kg Pb), or Pb‐naphthalene (400 mg/kg Pb, 333 mg/kg naphthalene) was investigated. HCl (0.1 N), EDTA (0.01 M), and CaCl2 (1.0 M) were selected as the soil‐flushing solutions based on soil‐washing experiments. For the Pb‐only tests, Pb removal efficiencies were 85, 100, and 78% for HCl, EDTA, and CaCl2, respectively. For PbSO4 (s), Pb removal efficiencies were 32, 100, and 96% for HCl, EDTA, and CaCl2, respectively, and for PbCO3 were 97, 100, and 14% for HCl, EDTA, and CaCl2, respectively. Larger amounts of flushing solutions were required for the remediation of PbSO4‐and PbCO3‐contaminated soils compared with the Pb‐only tests, most likely because of slower dissolution kinetics and the neutralization of HCl by CO3 ‐2 For Pb‐naphthalene, Pb removal efficiencies were 78 and 72% for HCl and EDTA, respectively, which compared well with soil‐washing results but were less than those observed in Pb‐only column studies.  相似文献

Although the concept of apical dominance control by the ratioof cytokinin to auxin is not new, recent experimentation withtransgenic plants has given this concept renewed attention.In the present study, it has been demonstrated that cytokinintreatments can partially reverse the inhibitory effect of auxinon lateral bud outgrowth in intact shoots of Ipomoea nil. Althoughless conclusive, this also appeared to occur in buds of isolatednodes. Auxin inhibited lateral bud outgrowth when applied eitherto the top of the stump of the decapitated shoot or directlyto the bud itself. However, the fact that cytokinin promotiveeffects on bud outgrowth are known to occur when cytokinin isapplied directly to the bud suggests different transport tissuesand/or sites of action for the two hormones. Cytokinin antagonistswere shown in some experiments to have a synergistic effectwith benzyladenine on the promotion of bud outgrowth. If theratio of cytokinin to auxin does control apical dominance, thenthe next critical question is how do these hormones interactin this correlative process? The hypothesis that shoot-derivedauxin inhibits lateral bud outgrowth indirectly by depletingcytokinin content in the shoots via inhibition of its productionin the roots was not supported in the present study which demonstratedthat the repressibility of lateral bud outgrowth by auxin treatmentsat various positions on the shoot was not correlated with proximityto the roots but rather with proximity to the buds. Resultsalso suggested that auxin in subtending mature leaves as wellas that in the shoot apex and adjacent small leaves may contributeto the apical dominance of a shoot. Suspension cultures of Papaver bracteatum Arya II Lindl., grown without hormone in the presence of conidial extracts of Verticillium dahliae Kleb., accumulate millimolar quantities of the benzophenanthridine alkaloid, sanguinarine. Under the fluorescence microscope, the elicitor-treated cells display an orange-yellow fluorescence characteristic of sanguinarine, primarily near the periphery of the cells. Electron-microscopic inspection showed the presence of slightly dilated endoplasmic reticulum and of electron-dense protuberances on the tonoplast of large central vacuoles. These osmiophilic aggregates lining the tonoplast bud into spherical bodies, appear to become detached from the membrane and are released into the vacuole. Upon subcellular fractionation of elicited cells on Renografin step gradients, sanguinarine was found to be distributed in all bands but with 86% concentrated in the gradient pellet. Analysis of the pellet by electron microscopy showed that it contained electron-dense fragments similar to the osmiophilic bodies observed on the tonoplast of intact elicited cells. In elicited cell cultures, most of the sanguinarine was recovered from medium in a 100·g sedimenting, cell-free, particulate fraction accounting for as much as 85% of the media sanguinarine and 62% of the total sanguinarine. The sanguinarine-rich 100·g media pellet was determined to be two-thirds protein, one-third RNA and was essentially devoid of phenolics, phospholipid and DNA. The pellet consisted of electrondense material and cytoplasmic remnants resembling those found in the Renografin pellet and tonoplast aggregates of intact cells. When placed under hypotonic conditions or extracted with aqueous buffer, pH 3–11, the pellet did not release sanguinarine. With the agar diffusion test and BS-C-1 cells, mycophenolic acid was found to give a straight-line dose-response activity in inhibiting the cytopathic effects of vaccinia, herpes simplex, and measles viruses. Plaque tests have shown 100% reduction of virus plaques by mycophenolic acid over drug ranges of 10 to 50 mug/ml and virus input as high as 6,000 plaque-forming units (PFU) per flask. Back titration studies with measles virus inhibited by mycophenolic acid have indicated that extracellular virus titers were reduced by approximately 3 logs(10) and total virus was reduced by 1 log(10). The agar diffusion test system lends itself readily to drug reversal studies. Mycophenolic acid incorporated into agar at 10 mug/ml gave 100% protection to virus-infected cells. Filter paper discs impregnated with selected chemical agents at concentrations of 1,000 mug/ml (20 mug per filter paper disc) were placed on the agar surface. Reversal of the antiviral activity of mycophenolic acid was indicated by virus breakthrough in those cells in close proximity to the filter paper disc. Chemicals showing the best reversal of the antiviral activity of mycophenolic acid were guanine, guanosine, guanylic acid, deoxyguanylic acid, and 2,6-diaminopurine. The reversal of antiviral activity was confirmed by titrations of virus produced with various amounts of both mycophenolic acid and guanine present and by isotope tracer methods with uptakes of labeled uridine, guanine, leucine, and thymidine in treated and nontreated, infected and noninfected cells as parameters. All antiviral effects of mycophenolic acid at 10 mug/ml could be reversed to the range shown by untreated controls by the addition of 10 mug/ml of those chemicals exhibiting reversal activity.  相似文献

The primary signal for Drosophila sex determination is the number of X chromosomes relative to the number of sets of autosomes. The present report shows that the numerator of this X/A signal appears to be determined by the cumulative dose of a relatively limited number of discrete X-linked genetic elements, two of which are sisterless-a and sisterless-b. This discovery regarding the nature of the sex determination signal grew out of previous studies of both the likely X/A signal target (the feminizing switch gene, Sex-lethal) and two positive regulators of that target gene (sis-a and daughterless). Combinations of genetic perturbations in these three genes had been shown to have synergistic effects. A model proposed in part to account for these interactions generated a large variety of strong predictions for sex-specific synergistic interactions that would be diagnostic for X/A numerator elements and could distinguish them from other components of the sex determination system. All these predictions, as well as other predictions for X/A numerator elements, are shown here to be fulfilled. The most compelling observations involve sexually reciprocal viability effects of duplications of wild-type genes: combinations of sis-a+, sis-b+ and/or Sxl+ duplications are lethal to males but rescue females from the otherwise lethal effects of changes in other components of the sex determination machinery. The many interactions described here illustrate an important principle that may seem counter-intuitive: perturbations of the sex determination signal for Drosophila generally will not appear to affect adult sexual phenotype. This principle follows from the fact that Sxl is involved in dosage compensation as well as sex determination, and from important aspects of the nature and timing of Sxl's regulation both by the X/A signal and by Sxl's own products (positive autoregulation). These factors mask potential effects on adult sexual differentiation by causing the premature death of cells and/or individuals. The fact that the vast array of results presented here conform to this principle is strong evidence in favor of a "binary state" model for Sxl regulation by the X/A signal. This model is favored over an alternative "multiple state" hypothesis that was proposed by others in a different study of the X/A signal. When Fe was supplied at 100 micromolar in nutrient solution of pH 7.5, 10 and 1 micromolar levels of the siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFOB), a microbial iron transport compound, significantly (α = 0.05) enhanced growth and reduced chlorosis of an Fe-inefficient variety of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). Although significantly adverse effects resulted when both Fe and desferrioxamine B (DFOB) were added at 100 micromolar as FeDFOB, the plants were relatively healthy when grown with 100 micromolar DFOB plus 200 micromolar Fe. It was concluded that sorghum absorbed Fe from the pool of nonchelated, solubilized Fe, and utilized DFOB as a shuttle agent, in equilibrium with this pool, to transport Fe from finely suspended solid phase Fe particles to the membrane of absorbing root cells.

In contrast to sorghum, absorption of Fe by the Fe-efficient species sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) was related to the level of FeDFOB and independent of the level of solubilized, nonchelated Fe. The latter was decreased whenever the concentration of DFOB was equal to or greater than the concentration of total Fe. For an Fe concentration of 10 micromolar, significantly larger and greener plants were obtained when DFOB was present at 1, 10, or 100 micromolar than in the absence of DFOB. When grown with 100 micromolar FeDFOB, sunflower plants appeared larger and less chlorotic than those supplied with 100 micromolar Fe and no DFOB. Sunflower apparently was able to utilize FeDFOB more directly than was sorghum. It is suggested that sunflower acquires Fe after binding FeDFOB at membrane sites and/or by producing sufficient reductants in the rhizosphere to reduce biologically significant levels of Fe(III)DFOB to the less stable Fe(II)DFOB.
