For parasites that require multiple hosts to complete their development, the interaction with the intermediate host may have an impact on parasite transmission and development in the definitive host. The human parasite Schistosoma mansoni needs two different hosts to complete its life cycle: the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (in South America) as intermediate host and a human or rodents as final host. To investigate the influence of the host environment on life history traits in the absence of selection, we performed experimental infections of two B. glabrata strains of different geographic origin with the same clonal population of S. mansoni. One B. glabrata strain is the sympatric host and the other one the allopatric host. We measured prevalence in the snail, the cercarial infectivity, sex-ratio, immunopathology in the final host and microsatellite frequencies of individual larvae in three successive generations. 相似文献

We present new evidence concerning the evolution of adult height across Spanish regions for the 1950–1980 male and female birth cohorts, using the augmented sample of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) for Spain. This augmented sample, available only for the year 2000, contains self-reported height data representative at the Autonomous Community level. The average heights of these two sets of birth cohorts, female and male, are found to increase by 1.7 and 1.6 cm/decade, respectively. Making available a new dataset of quinquennial mean heights will allow researchers to study the determinants of population heights by means of a within-country analysis. 相似文献

Age and size at the first reproduction and the reproductive allocation of plants are linked to different life history strategies. Aleppo pine only reproduces through seed, and, as such, early female reproduction confers high fitness in its infertile highly fire-prone habitats along the Mediterranean coast because life expectancy is short. We investigated the extent of ecotypic differentiation in female reproductive allocation and examined the relation between early female reproduction and vegetative growth. In a common-garden experiment, the threshold age and size at first female reproduction and female reproductive allocation at age seven differed significantly among Aleppo pine provenances of ecologically distinct origin. Significant correlations among reproductive features of the provenances and the ecological traits of origin were found using different analytical tools. In nonlinear models of cone counts vs. stem volume, medium-sized trees (not the largest trees) produced the highest cone yield, confirming that, at the individual level, early female reproduction is incompatible with fast vegetative growth. The contribution of founder effects and adaptation to contrasting fire regimes may be confounding factors. But considering all traits analyzed, the geographical patterns of resource allocation by Aleppo pine suggest ecotypic specialization for either resource-poor (favoring early reproduction) or resource-rich (favoring vegetative growth) habitats. 相似文献

To analyze the effects of diabetes mellitus on the vascular responsiveness to nitric oxide and thromboxane receptor stimulation, 2 mm long segments of basilar, coronary, renal and tail arteries from male and female, control (normoglycemic) and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, were prepared for isometric tension recording. In the segments at basal resting tension, the thromboxane analog U46619 (10(-9)-10(-5) M) produced concentration-dependent contraction, which was similar in arteries from male and female rats, and was reduced by diabetes in coronary arteries from male and in tail arteries from female rats. In the vascular segments precontracted with endothelin-1 (10(-9) M), acetylcholine (10(-9)-3 x 10(-5) M) produced concentration-dependent relaxation which was similar in all arteries from normoglycemic male and female rats, and was increased by diabetes in tail arteries from female, but not in those from male rats. In precontracted segments the nitric oxide donor sodium nitroprusside (10(-10)-10(-5) M) also produced concentration-dependent relaxation, which was higher in basilar arteries from normoglycemic females compared with males, and was increased by diabetes in tail arteries from female but not from male rats. These results suggest that diabetes may increase the relaxation to nitric oxide in tail arteries, and may reduce the contraction to thromboxane receptor activation in coronary and tail arteries in a gender-dependent way. These changes in vascular reactivity may be adaptative to the vascular alterations produced by diabetes. 相似文献

Urocortin is a vasodilator peptide related to corticotrophin-releasing factor, which may protect myocardium during coronary ischemia-reperfusion. To study whether urocortin also protects coronary endothelial function during ischemia-reperfusion, hearts from Sprague-Dawley rats were perfused at constant flow and then exposed to 15 mins ischemia followed by 15 mins reperfusion. In one series of experiments, we found that the coronary relaxation to urocortin (10(-11) to 10(-8) M) was reduced by ischemia-reperfusion (51 +/- 4% vs. 79 +/- 4% of the active tone, for the 10(-10) Mdose). In other series of experiments, we observed that ischemia-reperfusion reduced the coronary relaxation to a test dose of acetylcholine (10(-6) M) (25 +/- 2% vs. 54 +/- 9% of active tone), without modifying the relaxation to sodium nitroprusside (10(-6) M). Treatment with a low threshold concentration of urocortin (10(-11) M), administered before ischemia and during reperfusion, partly improved the coronary relaxation to acetylcholine (36 +/- 3% of active tone). These results suggest that ischemia-reperfusion impairs the coronary vasodilation to urocortin and produces endothelial dysfunction and that this endothelial dysfunction may be improved by urocortin. 相似文献

Until recently the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) consisted primarily of palliation, mostly in the form of pharmacological intervention. However because of recent advances in nonpharmacologic therapies, the current expectation of patients and referring physicians is that AF will be cured, rather than palliated. In recent years there has been a rapid expansion in the availability and variety of energy sources and devices for ablation. One of these energies, microwave, has been applied clinically only in the last few years, and may be a promising technique that is potentially capable of treating a wide range of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias. The purpose of this study was to review microwave energy ablation in surgical treatment of AF with special interest in histology and ultrastructure of lesions produced by this endocardial ablation procedure. 相似文献

A cosmid-based genomic library of Serratia marcescens N28b was introduced into Escherichia coli DH5alpha, and clones were screened for serum resistance. One clone was found resistant to serum, to bacteriocin 28b, and to bacteriophages TuIa and TuIb. This clone also showed O antigen in its lipopolysaccharide. Subcloning and sequencing experiments showed that a 2,124-bp DNA fragment containing the rmlD and wbbL genes was responsible for the observed phenotypes. On the basis of amino acid similarity, we suggest that the 288-residue RmlD protein is a dTDP-L-rhamnose synthase. Plasmid pJT102, containing only the wbbL gene, was able to induce O16-antigen production and serum resistance in E. coli DH5alpha. These results suggest that the 282-residue WbbL protein is a rhamnosyltransferase able to complement the rJb-50 mutation in E. coli K-12 derivatives, despite the low level of amino acid identity between WbbL and the E. coli rhamnosyltransferase (24.80%). S. marcescens N28b rmlD and wbbL mutants were constructed by mobilization of suicide plasmids containing a portion of rmlD or wbbL. These insertion mutants were unable to produce O antigen; since strain N28b produces O4 antigen, these results suggest that both genes are involved in O4-antigen biosynthesis. 相似文献

Effects of vanadate and insulin on glucose 1,6-P2 and fructose 2,6-P2 levels in rat skeletal muscle 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Levels of glucose 1,6-P2 but not fructose 2,6-P2 were found decreased in skeletal muscle of alloxan-diabetic ketotic rats. Administration of both insulin and vanadate restored the altered values without affecting fructose 2,6-P2 concentrations. In normal rats, insulin increased muscle levels of both sugars, and vanadate decreased glucose 1,6-P2 without changing fructose 2,6-P2 levels. Enzymatic activities involved in glucose 1,6-P2 and fructose 2,6-P2 metabolism were not affected under any experimental condition. 相似文献
