Controversies over the scientific name of the principal mosquito vector of yellow fever virus – expediency versus validity

The history of the scientific name of the yellow fever mosquito, the vector of yellow fever virus, ranges from 1757 to the early twenty‐first century. In his 1757 work Iter Palæstinum, Frederic Hasselquist gave the name Culex aegypti to a mosquito species responsible for fierce attacks on humans in Egypt. That name was never later ascribed to Hasselquist as author, but to Linnaeus, although the name never appeared in any of Linnaeus’ publications. In Cuba, at the end of the nineteenth century, the vector of the unknown infectious agent of yellow fever was first identified as Culex mosquito and later more validly named Stegomyia fasciata. Mosquito taxonomists differed strongly about the name of the mosquito through much of the twentieth century. Interventions by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature imposed a biologically invalid specific name, and in the early twenty‐first century a phylogenetic analysis of the culicid tribe Aedini restored the genus Stegomyia from a century earlier. That action was short‐lived. A phylogenetic reassessment resulted in the return of Stegomyia to subgeneric rank in Aedes; thus, the name of the yellow fever mosquito survives in the traditional classification of convenience as the trinomial Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus). 相似文献

A laboratory bioassay was conducted to determine the allelopathic potentials of aqueous extracts from either roots or leaves of seventeen sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas L. (Lam)] cultivars (SP0, SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4, SP5, SP6, SP7, SP9, SP10, SP11, SP13, SP14, SP15, SP16, SP18, and SP19). Most inhibitory rates on Lactuca sativa calculated for leaf or root extracts from the seventeen sweet potato cultivars exhibited positive values and significantly increased with increasing concentration. Germination was totally inhibited at a concentration of 0.05 g·mL?1 for leaf water extracts of SP13, SP15, SP18 and at a concentration of 0.05 g·mL?1 for both leaf and root water extracts of SP19. Inhibition of root length was clearly greater than inhibition of shoot length for both leaf and root water extracts. Biomass inhibition increased with increasing concentration, but some cultivars showed stimulatory effects at low concentrations, and inhibition was generally more pronounced for root water extracts than for leaf water extracts. Moreover, most synthetical inhibitory rates for both leaf and root water extracts from the seventeen cultivars exhibited positive values and significantly increased with increasing concentration. Comparing the synthetical inhibitory rates for both leaf and root water extracts among the seventeen cultivars, SP19, SP6, SP11, and SP7 had the highest allelopathic inhibition. The inhibitory activity on germination index was the greatest, followed by germination rate, root length, biomass, and shoot length in all bioassays. Inhibition by leaf water extracts was generally greater than inhibition by root water extracts, except in the case of shoot length or biomass. Overall, we conclude that all seventeen sweet potato cultivars have strong inhibitory effects on L. sativa, but that these effects vary with cultivar and plant part, with SP19, SP6, SP11, and SP7 exhibiting the highest rates of allelopathic inhibition. 相似文献

The bundle of tonic fibres situated at the proximal end of the locust metathoracic extensor tibialis muscle is innervated by the dorsal unpaired median neurone (DUMETi) as well as by the slow excitatory (SETi)) and common inhibitor (CI) neurones. It is not innervated by the fast excitatory neurone (FETi).These fibres contract spontaneously and rhythmically. The myogenic rhythm can be modified by neural stimulation.Spontaneous slow depolarizing potentials resembling the pacemaker potentials of insect cardiac muscle were demonstrated in these fibres.The actions of glutamate on the tonic muscle fibres are not compatible with its being a specific excitatory transmitter. Glutamate can stimulate weak contractions of the muscle, but this action is inhibited when chloride ions are removed from the saline.10?6 M Octapamine hyperpolarizes the tonic fibre membrane. Octopamine, GABA and glutamate all inhibit the myogenic contractions and reduce the force of the neurally evoked contractions.The tonic muscle is very responsive to proctolin. At 5 × 10?11 M proctolin enhances the force and increases the frequency of myogenic contractions. At 10?9 M it depolarizes the muscle membrane potential, and at that and higher concentrations it causes the muscle to contract. At 2 × 10?7 M proctolin induces contractures which resemble those evoked by sustained high-frequency neural stimulation. 1. Many aspects of the flow regime influence the structure of stream communities, among which the minimum discharge left in rivers has received particular attention. However, instream habitat models predicting the ecological impacts of discharge management often lack biological validation and spatial generality, particularly for large rivers with many fish species. 2. The minimum flow at Pierre‐Bénite, a reach of the Rhône river bypassed by artificial channels, was increased from 10 to 100 m3 s?1 in August 2000 (natural mean discharge 1030 m3 s?1), resulting in a fivefold increase in average velocity at minimum flow. Fish were electrofished in several habitat units on 12 surveys between 1995 and 2004. 3. Principal components analysis revealed a significant change in the relative abundance of fish species. The relative abundance of species preferring fast‐flowing and/or deep microhabitats increased from two‐ to fourfold after minimum flow increase. A change in community structure confirmed independent quantitative predictions of an instream habitat model. This change was significantly linked to minimum flow increase, but not to any other environmental variables describing high flows or temperature at key periods of fish life cycle. The rapidity of the fish response compared with the lifespan of individual species can be explained by a differential response of specific size classes. 4. The fish community at Pierre‐Bénite is in a transitional stage and only continued monitoring will indicate if the observed shift in community structure is perennial. We expect that our case study will be compared with other predictive tests of the impacts of flow restoration in large rivers, in the Rhône catchment and elsewhere. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: CD56 is a lineage-specific marker of human natural killer (NK) cells. There are conflicts in the literature regarding the role of CD56 as a marker of NK cells in non-human primates. In the present study, we examined the role of CD56 in identifying rhesus NK cells. METHODS: The immunophenotype of normal macaque and human NK cells was analyzed by two- and three-color flow cytometry. Flow cytometric cell sorting was subsequently used to deplete or purify NK cells; the resulting cell populations were then used in standard chromium release assays of NK lytic function. RESULTS: In peripheral blood mononuclear cells of the rhesus macaque, CD56 was expressed primarily on cells with the light scatter and immunophenotypic profile of monocytes. Flow cytometric depletion of rhesus CD56(+) monocytic cells did not diminish functional activity against K562 cells, whereas depletion of CD8(+) or CD16(+) lymphocytes completely abrogated functional activity. Three-color flow cytometric analysis of CD8(+), CD16(+) lymphocytes showed that they expressed other markers (CD2, CD7, TIA-1) associated with NK cells, but notably, not CD56. CONCLUSIONS: These studies demonstrate that CD56 is not suitable as a marker of NK cells in the rhesus macaque. 相似文献

We have studied the effect of sodium orthovanadate, an inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatases, on primary cultures of colonocytes and stromal cells. Everted proximal and distal colonic tissue of adult rats were disintegrated by a collagenase/dispase solution for 60 min at 37°C to prepare viable gland fragments and isolated cells. Cell preparations were inoculated onto plastic substratum or cytodex-3 microcarriers in a defined maintenance medium or in 1% fetal calf serum media. Incorporation of sodium orthovanadate (≥50 μm) in these media constantly enhanced the survival (cell enumeration and trypan blue exclusionP<0.05) and the adhesion (up to four-fold by crystal violet staining,P<0.01) of colonocytes (characterized by cytokeratin-18, transforming growth factor-α or alkaline phosphatase expression) and stromal cells. Removal of sodium orthovanadate from culture media restored cellular death processes. Incorporation of 10 mmn-butyric acid did not promote cell adhesion and survival except for distal cells exposed to 2 mm sodium orthovanadate. Besides studies in the regulation of anoikis in primary culture, the model will help to assay the influences of dietary and growth factors on the biology of non-cancerous colonic cells. 相似文献
