Understanding the relationship between growth and temperature will aid in the evaluation of thermal stress and threats to ectotherms in the context of anticipated climate changes. Most Pecten maximus scallops living at high latitudes in the northern hemisphere have a larger maximum body size than individuals further south, a common pattern among many ectotherms. We investigated differences in daily shell growth among scallop populations along the Northeast Atlantic coast from Spain to Norway. This study design allowed us to address precisely whether the asymptotic size observed along a latitudinal gradient, mainly defined by a temperature gradient, results from differences in annual or daily growth rates, or a difference in the length of the growing season. We found that low annual growth rates in northern populations are not due to low daily growth values, but to the smaller number of days available each year to achieve growth compared to the south. We documented a decrease in the annual number of growth days with age regardless of latitude. However, despite initially lower annual growth performances in terms of growing season length and growth rate, differences in asymptotic size as a function of latitude resulted from persistent annual growth performances in the north and sharp declines in the south. Our measurements of daily growth rates throughout life in a long-lived ectothermic species provide new insight into spatio-temporal variations in growth dynamics and growing season length that cannot be accounted for by classical growth models that only address asymptotic size and annual growth rate. 相似文献

White pine blister rust is caused by the fungal pathogen Cronartium ribicola J.C. Fisch (Basidiomycota, Pucciniales). This invasive alien pathogen was introduced into North America at the beginning of the 20th century on pine seedlings imported from Europe and has caused serious economic and ecological impacts. In this study, we applied a population and landscape genetics approach to understand the patterns of introduction and colonization as well as population structure and migration of C. ribicola. We characterized 1,292 samples of C. ribicola from 66 geographic locations in North America using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and evaluated the effect of landscape features, host distribution, and colonization history on the structure of these pathogen populations. We identified eastern and western genetic populations in North America that are strongly differentiated. Genetic diversity is two to five times higher in eastern populations than in western ones, which can be explained by the repeated accidental introductions of the pathogen into northeastern North America compared with a single documented introduction into western North America. These distinct genetic populations are maintained by a barrier to gene flow that corresponds to a region where host connectivity is interrupted. Furthermore, additional cryptic spatial differentiation was identified in western populations. This differentiation corresponds to landscape features, such as mountain ranges, and also to host connectivity. We also detected genetic differentiation between the pathogen populations in natural stands and plantations, an indication that anthropogenic movement of this pathogen still takes place. These results highlight the importance of monitoring this invasive alien tree pathogen to prevent admixture of eastern and western populations where different pathogen races occur. 相似文献

Mitochondria are organelles derived from an intracellular α-proteobacterium. The biogenesis of mitochondria relies on the assembly of β-barrel proteins into the mitochondrial outer membrane, a process inherited from the bacterial ancestor. Caulobacter crescentus is an α-proteobacterium, and the BAM (β-barrel assembly machinery) complex was purified and characterized from this model organism. Like the mitochondrial sorting and assembly machinery complex, we find the BAM complex to be modular in nature. A ∼150 kDa core BAM complex containing BamA, BamB, BamD, and BamE associates with additional modules in the outer membrane. One of these modules, Pal, is a lipoprotein that provides a means for anchorage to the peptidoglycan layer of the cell wall. We suggest the modular design of the BAM complex facilitates access to substrates from the protein translocase in the inner membrane. 相似文献

High levels of genetic divergence and inbreeding in populations of cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum)

Theobroma grandiflorum (cupuassu) is an important fruit tree native to the Brazilian Amazon. Establishing the genetic diversity and structure of
populations is critical to define long-term strategies for cupuassu conservation presently threatened by rapid deforestation.
Three natural populations collected at the putative center of diversity, three groups of accessions established at a germplasm
collection, and one derived from commercial plantings were analyzed. The genetic diversity was assessed using 21 polymorphic
microsatellite loci originally developed for Theobroma cacao, disclosing a total of 113 alleles. The estimated genetic diversity parameters averaged over cupuassu populations (A = 3.53 alleles per locus; H
e = 0.426; H
o = 0.346) were lower than the values reported for other Neotropical tree species. The three natural populations presented
a positive and significant fixation index (f), ranging from 0.133 to 0.234. Cupuassu apparently adhered to a general pattern of genetic diversity structure of some Neotropical
tree species occurring at low densities, with a low intrapopulation genetic diversity and important levels of endogamy, possibly
due to biparental inbreeding derived from the presence of spatial genetic structure in the populations. A high level of genetic
divergence was detected among the natural populations (θ
p = 0.301), a strong differentiation caused by limited gene flow, and suggesting that human interference in spreading and/or
stimulating plantings might have had a smaller effect than expected. The approximate location of the T. grandiflorum center of diversity could not be confirmed by analyzing natural populations from the putative region. 相似文献

Conditioned medium prepared from human autopsy lung tissue contains high level activity of colony stimulating factor which stimulates granulocytes and macrophage colony formation in both mouse and human bone marrow. The lung colony stimulating factor has been purified about 2250-fold by methods including hydroxylapatite chromatography, preparative gel electrophoresis, preparative isoelectric focusing, and gel filtration chromatography. The final specific activity was 2.7 X 10(6) units/mg. The purified factor has a molecular weight of 41 000 as determined by gel filtration. It is stable at the pH range of 6.5--10 and 56 degrees C for 30 min but sensitive to protease digestion and periodate oxidation. On polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, it migrates in the alpha-globulin post-albumin region. Upon isoelectrofocusing lung colony stimulating factor appears heterogeneous with isoelectric points of 3.7--4.3. Treatment with neuraminidase did not affect its activity, but caused a change in electrophoretic mobility and isoelectric point. Antibody produced by immunizing rabbits with partially purified lung colony stimulating factor exerted strong inhibitory activity on the factor from lung as well as on colony stimulating factor from other human sources including serum, urine, and placenta. 相似文献

We also observed responses of these parasitoids to their normal rearing hosts,Bactrocera dorsalis(Hendel) andCeratitis capitata(Weidemann).D. tryonilanded on pamakani galls or on dishes containingP. alanilarvae as frequently as on dishes containingC. capitata.In contrast,D. longicaudataonly rarely landed on the galls.D. tryoniandD. longicaudataoviposited in galls in fewer than 1% of our observations.D. longicaudataprobedP. alanilarvae as frequently asB. dorsalislarvae, but no parasitoid offspring were observed.D. tryonioviposited more frequently inC. capitatathanP. alani.NoD. tryonideveloped inP. alanilarvae.T. giffardianuslanded on pamakani galls andP. alanilarvae more frequently than any other host substrate. Animal societies vary in the number of breeders per group, which affects many socially and ecologically relevant traits. In several social insect species, including our study species Formica selysi, the presence of either one or multiple reproducing females per colony is generally associated with differences in a suite of traits such as the body size of individuals. However, the proximate mechanisms and ontogenetic processes generating such differences between social structures are poorly known. Here, we cross‐fostered eggs originating from single‐queen (= monogynous) or multiple‐queen (= polygynous) colonies into experimental groups of workers from each social structure to investigate whether differences in offspring survival, development time and body size are shaped by the genotype and/or prefoster maternal effects present in the eggs, or by the social origin of the rearing workers. Eggs produced by polygynous queens were more likely to survive to adulthood than eggs from monogynous queens, regardless of the social origin of the rearing workers. However, brood from monogynous queens grew faster than brood from polygynous queens. The social origin of the rearing workers influenced the probability of brood survival, with workers from monogynous colonies rearing more brood to adulthood than workers from polygynous colonies. The social origin of eggs or rearing workers had no significant effect on the head size of the resulting workers in our standardized laboratory conditions. Overall, the social backgrounds of the parents and of the rearing workers appear to shape distinct survival and developmental traits of ant brood. 相似文献

Statistical fluctuations limit the precision with which a microorganism can, in a given time T, determine the concentration of a chemoattractant in the surrounding medium. The best a cell can do is to monitor continually the state of occupation of receptors distributed over its surface. For nearly optimum performance only a small fraction of the surface need be specifically adsorbing. The probability that a molecule that has collided with the cell will find a receptor is Ns/(Ns + pi a), if N receptors, each with a binding site of radius s, are evenly distributed over a cell of radius a. There is ample room for many indenpendent systems of specific receptors. The adsorption rate for molecules of moderate size cannot be significantly enhanced by motion of the cell or by stirring of the medium by the cell. The least fractional error attainable in the determination of a concentration c is approximately (TcaD) - 1/2, where D is diffusion constant of the attractant. The number of specific receptors needed to attain such precision is about a/s. Data on bacteriophage absorption, bacterial chemotaxis, and chemotaxis in a cellular slime mold are evaluated.
