Forty-five individuals with generalized anxiety (38 with GAD as defined by DSM-III) were randomized to 4 treatment conditions or a waiting list control. Patients received 8 sessions of either frontal EMG biofeedback, biofeedback to increase EEG alpha, biofeedback to decrease EEG alpha, or a pseudomeditation control condition. All treated subjects showed significant reductions in STAI-Trait Anxiety and psychophysiologic symptoms on the Psychosomatic Symptom Checklist. Only alpha-increase biofeedback subjects showed significant reductions in heart rate reactivity to stressors at a separate psychophysiological testing session. Decreased self-report of anxiety was maintained at 6 weeks posttreatment.  相似文献

Regulation of nitrogen fixation in response to various environmentalconditions often involves an adjustment in nodule permeabilityand, because of the importance of nodule permeability in nitrogenfixation, several methods to estimate it have been developed.In the present study, these methods are reviewed and their limitationsare highlighted. A simple, rapid and inexpensive technique thatcan be used to estimate permeability of nodules and respirationof other plant tissues is described. The technique was evaluatedby comparing it to the lag-phase technique as an independentand reliable method for estimating nodule permeability. Overa wide range of nodule permeability estimates, the closed systemO2 uptake technique was linearly related to lag-phase permeabilityestimates. The technique was tested further by studying theresponse to sub- and supra-ambient pO2 in the root environment,and the responses agreed well with published reports on theeffect of O2 on nodule permeability. The technique was foundto be very satisfactory in estimating nodule permeability andmay be used to measure the ability of other plant tissues totake up O2. The splanchnic circulation can make a major contribution to blood flow changes. However, the role of the splanchnic circulation in the reflex adjustments to the blood pressure increase during isometric exercise is not well documented. The central command and the muscle chemoreflex are the two major mechanisms involved in the blood pressure response to isometric exercise. This study aimed to examine the behaviour of the superior mesenteric artery during isometric handgrip (IHG) at 30% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The pulsatility index (PI) of the blood velocity waveform of the superior mesenteric artery was taken as the study parameter. A total of ten healthy subjects [mean age, 21.1 (SEM 0.3) years] performed an IHG at 30% MVC for 90 s. At 5 s prior to the end of the exercise, muscle circulation was arrested for 90 s to study the effect of the muscle chemoreflex (post exercise arterial occlusion, PEAO). The IHG at 30% MVC caused a decrease in superior mesenteric artery PI, from 4.84 (SEM 1.57) at control level to 3.90 (SEM 1.07) (P = 0.015). The PI further decreased to 3.17 (SEM 0.70) (P = 0.01) during PEAO. Our results indicated that ergoreceptors may be involved in the superior mesenteric artery vasodilatation during isometric exercise.  相似文献

Animal husbandry would be well served by procedures that created new phenotypes by selective breeding and propagated them by cloning—that is by asexual or vegetative reproduction. Such reproductive patterns characterize some plants and some invertebrate animals. Even a few species of reptiles, amphibians, and fish exhibit parthenogenetic reproduction. Mammalian eggs can easily be provoked to develop parthenogenetically but no mammalian parthenote has ever developed to term. However the parthenote cells can be rescued by aggregating them with normal cells to make a chimera that can reach adulthood and reproduce using the parthenote cells. Replication and growth of embryos in vitro has led to twins or even quadruplets. Continued growth in vitro, as exemplified by teratocarcinomas, could lead to useful cloning. Nuclear transplantation, leading to cloning, can be carried out in mammals by using embryonic nuclei but this presents no economic advantage. Cloning with adult nuclei is not possible at present. Circumventing meiosis altogether, coupled with parthenogenesis, would lead to the most desirable mode of cloning, and this might be achieved through a series of mutations.  相似文献

Rat hepatic uroporphyrinogen III co-synthase was isolated and purified 73-fold with a 13% yield by (NH4)2SO4 fractionation and sequential chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel, Sephadex G-100 (superfine grade) and folate-AH-Sepharose 4B. The purified co-synthase has an Mr of approx. 42 000, and is resolved into two bands, each possessing co-synthase activity, by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. A factor was dissociated from the purified co-synthase. Results of both microbiological and competitive protein-binding assays suggest that it is a pteroylpolyglutamate. The isolated pteroylpolyglutamate factor was co-eluted with authentic N5-methyltetrahydropteroylheptaglutamate on DEAE-Sephacel. Uroporphyrinogen III is formed by cosynthase-free preparations of uroporphyrinogen I synthase in the presence of tetrahydropteroylglutamate. Tetrahydropeteroylheptaglutamate is also able to direct the formation of equivalent amounts of uroporphyrinogen III at a concentration approximately one-hundredth that of tetrahydropteroylmonoglutamate. These results suggest that a reduced pteroylpolyglutamate factor is associated with rat hepatic uroporphyrinogen III co-synthase, and that this may function as a coenzyme for the biosynthesis of uroporphyrinogen III.  相似文献

The development of a microtiter solid-phase radioimmunoassay for detection of the human reovirus-like (RVL) agent is described. The test is simple to perform and uses small amounts of reagents; a large number of specimens can rapidly be tested in a single test. Both filtered and unfiltered stool suspensions can be employed. The test was as sensitive as immune electron microscopy, and with an appropriate blocking test, was specific for the human RVL agent.  相似文献

Summary We have cloned lamB, the gene for receptor (an outer membrane protein), on a small plasmid which also carries the gene for -lactamase (a periplasmic protein). We have identified a promoter in the region of malK, the gene immediately preceding lamB, which is active in minicells but relatively inactive in vitro. Using a minicell system, we have found that both receptor and -lactamase are made as full length precursors which are subsequently processed. We also show that the receptor precursor can be exported to the outer membrane before it is processed. Mature -lactamase is found only in the periplasm, suggesting that processing may be a requirement for export to the periplasm.  相似文献
