Educational field trips are common practice in environmental education and education for sustainable development, well recognised by researchers for their potential to achieve cognitive and affective educational outcomes. One of the factors that influences learning during field trips is their novelty. The current study focuses on the interplay between novelty, preparation and environmental learning outcomes of 5th and 6th grade students during a typical field trip in Flanders. Our dependent variables are Inclusion of Nature in the Self, the two major ecological values Preservation and Utilisation and ecosystem knowledge. The sample includes 484 students (10–12 years old) and their 24 teachers. Key questions addressed are: (1) What is learned during the field trip? (2) What is the level of novelty for students during a field trip? (3) How does the novelty effect relate to learning? Results show that participation in the field trip leads to a substantial increase in ecosystem knowledge, but fails in reaching the affective goals set out by the field trip organisers. Our results furthermore provide support for the hypothesised non-linear relationship between novelty and knowledge gain, showing that while a little novelty is positive, too much novelty can stand in the way of learning. 相似文献

Spotted‐wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, is an invasive pest in the United States that causes considerable damage to fruit crops. It is responsible for many millions of dollars of revenue loss. The female D. suzukii has a heavily sclerotized ovipositor and can lay eggs in ripening or ripe fruit. The arrival of this invasive species has disrupted existing integrated pest management programmes, and growers rely on repeated insecticide applications to protect fruit. Organic growers have few chemical control options, and their reliance on spinosad increases the risk of developing insecticide resistance. We hypothesized that combining phagostimulants with insecticides would increase insecticide efficacy by prompting flies to spend more time in contact with residues. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of sucrose and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as phagostimulants in combination with organic biopesticides against D. suzukii in blueberries. Adding sucrose with or without yeast did not improve insecticide efficacy in terms of adult fly mortality or fruit infestation. Spinosad was very effective in all experiments, and for this product, there is little room for improvement. The phagostimulants had no effect on residual activity of any insecticide. The addition of sucrose with or without yeast did not improve the effectiveness of organic insecticides for D. suzukii. Concentrations of these phagostimulants in our experiments (0.36%) may have been too low to elicit a response. Further research is recommended to test different types and concentrations of phagostimulants. 相似文献

The venom of the North African scorpion Androctonus mauretanicus mauretanicus possesses numerous highly active neurotoxins that specifically bind to various ion channels. One of these, P05, has been found to bind specifically to calcium-activated potassium channels and also to compete with apamin, a toxin extracted from bee venom. Besides the highly potent ones, several of these peptides (including that of P01) have been purified and been found to possess only a very weak, although significant, activity in competition with apamin. The amino acid sequence of P01 shows that it is shorter than P05 by two residues. This deletion occurs within an α-helix stretch (residues 5–12). This α-helix has been shown to be involved in the interaction of P05 with its receptor via two arginine residues. These two arginines are absent in the P01 sequence. Furthermore, a proline residue in position 7 of the P01 sequence may act as an α-helix breaker. We have determined the solution structure of P01 by conventional two-dimensional 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and show that 1) the proline residue does not disturb the α-helix running from residues 5 to 12; 2) the two arginines are topologically replaced by two acidic residues, which explains the drop in activity; 3) the residual binding activity may be due to the histidine residue in position 9; and 4) the overall secondary structure is conserved, i.e., an α-helix running from residues 5 to 12, two antiparallel stretches of β-sheet (residues 15–20 and 23–27) connected by a type I′ β-turn, and three disulfide bridges connecting the α-helix to the β-sheet. 相似文献

The existence of stressor-specific induction programs of heat shock proteins (hsps) leads us to analyze the possible occurrence of a stressor-specific tolerance induced by either heat shock, arsenite, or cadmium. As a measure of this tolerance re-induction of hsps was studied. In this paper, we tested whether the refractory state is either valid for each specific hsp (implying independent regulation of every member of the heat shock protein family) or extends from small subsets of the hsp-family to even larger groups of proteins (indicating a more common denominator in their regulation). (Re-)induction of hsps does not seem to be regulated at the level of each individual hsp since differences in induced synthesis of hsps between two stressor conditions are not supplemented systematically upon the sequential application of the two stressors. The most notable example in this respect is hsp60. A pretreatment with cadmium, which hardly induces synthesis of this hsp, does induce a tolerance to (re)-induction by heat shock, which normally induces hsp60. This suggests the existence of a more common denominator regulating the coordinate expression of at least some hsps. From our data we conclude that the degree, but not the pattern, of hsp re-induction is influenced by the type of stressor used in the pretreatment. The pattern of hsps induced by a secondary applied stressor still shows most of its stressor-specificity and seems to be independent of any pretreatment. The purpose of this review is to give some perspective of the factors that influence feeding behaviors and the ability of herbivores to adapt to diets. The most important of these are digestibility, ability to select feed, and achievement of a nutritionally adequate intake. Plant morphology, observed feeding behavior, body size, and gut architecture and size impinge upon these factors. Feeding behavior and dietary specializations are associated with adaptations of gut and mouth parts as well as body size. Parallel and overlapping behaviors occur among herbivores and particularly between ruminants and nonruminants. The conventional classifications of grazers, browsers, and selective feeders are blurred by these evolutionary developments. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献
