Anchialine lakes are a globally rare and unique ecosystem consisting of saline lakes surrounded by land and isolated from the surrounding marine environment. These lakes host a unique flora and fauna including numerous endemic species. Relatively few studies have, however, studied the prokaryote communities present in these lakes and compared them with the surrounding ‘open water’ marine environment. In the present study, we used a 16S rRNA gene barcoded pyrosequencing approach to examine prokaryote (Bacteria and Archaea) composition in three distinct biotopes (sediment, water and the mussel Brachidontes sp.) inhabiting four habitats, namely, three marine lakes and the surrounding marine environment of Berau, Indonesia. Biotope and habitat proved significant predictors of variation in bacterial and archaeal composition and higher taxon abundance. Most bacterial sequences belonged to OTUs assigned to the Proteobacteria. Compared to sediment and water, mussels had relatively high abundances of the classes Mollicutes and Epsilonproteobacteria. Most archaeal sequences, in turn, belonged to OTUs assigned to the Crenarchaeota with the relative abundance of crenarchaeotes highest in mussel samples. For both Bacteria and Archaea, the main variation in composition was between water samples on the one hand and sediment and mussel samples on the other. Sediment and mussels also shared much more OTUs than either shared with water. Abundant bacterial OTUs in mussels were related to organisms previously obtained from corals, oysters and the deepsea mussel Bathymodiolus manusensis. Abundant archaeal OTUs in mussels, in contrast, were closely related to organisms previously obtained from sediment.  相似文献

Abstract:  The impact of logging on the relative abundance, species richness and community composition of four butterfly guilds (generalists, herb specialists, liana specialists and tree specialists) was assessed in differentially disturbed logging treatments located within the province of Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Logging affected the overall butterfly composition by increasing the dominance of liana specialists at the expense of tree specialists and increasing the species richness of herb specialists and, to a lesser extent, generalists. There was no significant difference, however, in the species richness of liana specialists or tree specialists across logging treatments. The species composition of all guilds differed significantly among logging treatments with the greatest difference between unlogged forest and road sites with older and recently logged forest intermediate between these extremes. Our results indicate that logging has a disparate effect on abundance and species richness within each butterfly guild. We suggest that shifts in the dominance of butterfly guilds are due to large-scale logging-induced changes in vegetation, particularly in relation to liana abundance. The higher butterfly species richness in logged areas on the other hand is probably because of butterfly species associated with open areas entering the logged forest from roads or other large open areas.  相似文献

We have recently prepared a recombinant library of goat genomic DNA and have isolated clones containing th known goat globin genes. These include the alpha, gamma, beta C and beta A genes. In addition to these, another beta-like sequence has been observed. In this communication we report the complete nucleotide sequence of this gene, excluding a portion of the large intervening sequence. Several features suggest that this is a non-functional or pseudoglobin gene. The alterations include a frameshift mutation, substitution of the heme-binding histidines, a mutated termination codon, a change in the GT/AG excision sequence of the 5' end of the first intervening sequence, an AT rich sequence in the 3' untranslated region, and a mutated Hogness-Goldberg box. We conclude that this gene cannot function in the synthesis of globin.  相似文献

Pergolide is an ergot derivative with dopaminergic activity and, like bromocriptine, can suppress prolactin release from the pituitary gland. In a single blind study pergolide was administered for 90 days to three females with idiopathic hyperprolactinemia manifested by galactorrhea and amenorrhea. Response to therapy was followed clinically and by determination of plasma prolactin concentrations. Pergolide lowered plasma prolactin concentrations and suppressed galactorrhea in all patients. Menstruation recurred in both patients with intact GU systems. Side effects were minor and tolerance developed to all but nasal stuffiness. Pergolide appears to be efficacious therapy for patients with amenorrhea/galactorrhea secondary to hyperprolactinemia.  相似文献

This study examines the psychological impact of the Three Mile Island incident. The results are based on data from a panel study of 403 persons living within five miles of Three Mile Island (TMI), and a telephone survey of 1,506 people living within 55 miles of that area. Active coping strategies were associated with continued high levels of distress. Having more friends was related to reduced distress, but introspection, taking protective actions, being active in organizations, and seeking out others were all related to higher levels of distress. High self-esteem was related to a decrease in symptoms and psychotropic drug use, and avoidance behaviors were related to higher than expected numbers of symptoms. Efforts to profile those who used different coping strategies were relatively unsuccessful. The results emphasize the need to consider the nature of the stressor when developing models of coping and response to stressful situations.  相似文献

A chicken tendon explant model system has been developed to investigate the effects of extremely-low-frequency (ELF), low-amplitude, unipolar, square wave pulsed electric fields on fibroplasia in vitro. An electric field parameter set consisting of 1-Hz, 1-ms duration pulses, with a time-averaged current density of 7 mA/m2 (peak current density 7 A/m2) induced maximal (32%) increase in fibroblast proliferation in tendon explants exposed for 4 days. Exposure to the same field at an average current density of 1.8 mA/m2 had no effect on fibroblast proliferation, whereas exposure to current densities on greater than 10 mA/m2 inhibited proliferation and relative collagen synthesis, without affecting noncollagen protein synthesis. Fibroplasia was significantly increased in explants oriented parallel to applied electric fields having current densities of 3.5 or 7 mA/m2, but there was no detectable effect on explants oriented perpendicular to the same electric field. Fibroblast proliferation and relative collagen synthesis were inversely proportional to donor age for chickens in the 3- to 16-week age group used in this study. For these dependent variables (proliferation and relative collagen synthesis), there was no interaction between donor age and ELF electric field exposure.  相似文献

Elastic tissue, when viewed in the electron microscope, consists of an amorphous component that is immunoreactive with anti-tropoelastin (TE) antibodies and microfibrils, that react with monospecific antibodies against a 31 kDa microfibrillar glycoprotein constituent, called MAGP. A detailed study of the tissue distribution of microfibrils and of the two elastic tissue antibodies has been carried out, using single and double-labeled immunogold techniques in high resolution electron microscopy. Microfibrils similar in appearance to those associated with elastic tissue and immunoreactive with the anti-MAGP antibody, have been demonstrated in many tissues in the absence of amorphous elastic tissue. In the majority of these tissues, specific anti-TE antibody localization was demonstrated in the immediate vicinity of the microfibrils, or alternatively, the microfibrils were shown to be in direct continuity with microfibrils of similar morphology, which were associated with material immunoreactive with anti-TE antibody. The diameter of these microfibrils varied between 8 nm and 16 nm. They were unbranched structures of indefinite length, with a tubular profile on cross section and periodic staining in longitudinal section. In some tissues, notably in the ciliary zonule and in the mesangial region of the renal glomerulus, microfibrils of similar morphology were demonstrated which were immunoreactive with anti-MAGP antibody, but which were unrelated to amorphous elastic tissue and with which anti-TE antibody localization could not be demonstrated. The evidence available supports the conclusion that all these microfibrils are members of a single class of structures, which are widely distributed in the tissues and which are secreted by a range of cell types. Attention is directed to the close relationship between these microfibrils and the basement membrane of the glomerulus, of uterine smooth muscle, of the basal cells of the epidermis and of the reticulum cells of the spleen.  相似文献
