Ingestion time, digestion time, and assimilation efficiency by the sea anemone Aiptasia pallida were studied in the laboratory by feeding individual anemones preweighed pellets of freeze-dried Artemia salina nauplii. There was no significant correlation between anemone size, measured as dry weight, and either ingestion time, digestion time or assimilation efficiency. Similarly, there was no significant correlation between meal size (i.e., dry weight of ingested brine shrimp pellet) and either ingestion time, digestion time or assimilation efficiency. These results suggest that, under these conditions, assimilation efficiency is unaffected by either “meal” size or anemone size.  相似文献

The effects of light regime, feeding regime and tentacle number on the zooplankton feeding capability of Hydra viridis were tested in the laboratory. Feeding was measured by exposing Hydra to a known volume of Artemia salina nauplii and recording the number captured and ingested. In all cases there was a correlation between the number of Artemia captured and the number ingested. H. viridis with 7 tentacles captured and ingested more Artemia than Hydra with 6 tentacles. However, changes in light and/or feeding regimes did not alter the number of tentacles/Hydra. Varying light and feeding regimes altered the number of Zoochlorellae/cell and Hydra growth rate. There was no effect on the number of Artemia captured or ingested and no effect on the percent ingestion of captured Artemia. These data suggest that, under these conditions, zooplankton feeding by H. viridis is independent of nutritional history.  相似文献

Classical studies on spore release within the Saprolegniaceae (Oomycetes) led to the proposition that different mechanisms of sporangial emptying represent steps in an evolutionary transition series. We have reevaluated this idea in a phylogenetic framework using internal transcribed spacer sequences of four genera. These data were compared with the response to osmotic stress exhibited by each taxon. Saprolegnia emerges as the most basal genus, sister to Achlya, Thraustotheca, and Dictyuchus. Achlya and Thraustotheca are most closely related, while Dictyuchus appears to have evolved along a separate evolutionary lineage. The resulting phylogenetic framework is consistent with the idea that the mechanism of sporangial emptying exhibited by Saprolegnia represents the plesiomorphic condition from which the other mechanisms were derived independently. These alternative mechanisms of spore release may have resulted from a small number of mutations that inhibited axonemal development and altered the temporal and spatial expression of lytic enzymes that degrade the sporangial wall. Chromatophores from Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides were oriented by allowing aqueous suspensions to dry on glass plates. Orientation of reaction center pigments was investigated by studying the linear dichroism of chromatophores in which the absorption by antenna bacteriochlorophyll had been attenuated through selective oxidation. Alternatively the light-induced absorbance changes, in the ranges 550–650 and 700–950 nm, were studied in untreated chromatophores. The long wave transition moment of reaction center bacteriochlorophyll (P-870) was found to be nearly parallel to the plane of the membrane, whereas the long wave transition moments of bacteriopheophytin are polarized out of this plane. For light-induced changes the linear dichroic ratios, defined as Δavah, are nearly the same for untreated and for oxidized chromatophores. Typical values are 1.60 at 870 nm, 0.80 at 810 nm, 1.20 at 790 nm, 0.70 at 765 nm, 0.30 at 745 nm, and 0.50 at 600 nm. The different values for the absorbance decrease at 810 nm (0.80) and the increase at 790 nm (1.20) are incompatible with the hypothesis that these changes are due to the blue-shift of a single band. We propose that the decreases at 870 and 810 nm reflect bleaching of the two components of a bacteriochlorophyll dimer, the “special pair” that shares in the photochemical donation of a single electron. The increase at 790 nm then represents the appearance of a monomer band in place of the dimer spectrum, as a result of electron donation. This hypothesis is consistent with available data on circular dichroism. It is confirmed by the presence of a shoulder at 810 nm in the absorption spectrum of reaction centers at low temperature; this band disappears upon photooxidation of the reaction centers. For the changes near 760 nm, associated with bacteriopheophytin, the polarization and the shape of the “light-dark” difference spectrum (identical to the first derivative of the absorption spectrum) show that the 760 nm band undergoes a light-induced shift to greater wavelengths.  相似文献
