Comparisons among the primary sequences of five cloned eukaryotic esterases
reveal two distinct lineages, neither bearing any significant overall
sequence similarity to the functionally related serine protease multigene
family. We have not eliminated the possibility that the esterases may have
residual conformational similarities to the serine proteases. However, our
profile analysis and analyses of the predicted conformations of the
esterases reveal little similarity to the serine proteases. Four of the
esterase proteins share 27%-53% overall sequence similarity and evidence of
a catalytic mechanism involving the same Arg- Asp-Ser or His-Asp-Ser charge
relay. We propose that these four esterases, three of them cholinesterases,
form part of a multigene family essentially separate from the serine
proteases.

A novel hollow-fiber membrane remediation technology developed in our laboratory for hydrogen delivery to the subsurface was shown to support the dechlorination of perchloroethene (PCE) to cis-dichloroethene. In previous research, the presence of nitrate or sulfate has been observed to inhibit biological reductive dechlorination. In this study hollow-fiber membranes were used to supply hydrogen to a mixed culture to investigate whether adequate hydrogen could be added to support dechlorination in the presence of alternative electron acceptors. By continuously supplying hydrogen through the membrane, the hydrogen concentrations within the reactor were maintained well above the hydrogen thresholds reported to sustain reductive dechlorination. It was hypothesized that by preventing nitrate and sulfate reducers from decreasing hydrogen concentrations to below the dehalorespirer threshold, the inhibition of PCE dechlorination by nitrate and sulfate might be avoided and dechlorination could be stimulated more effectively. Enough membrane-fed hydrogen was supplied to completely degrade the alternative electron acceptors present and initiate dechlorination. Nevertheless, nitrate and sulfate inhibited dechlorinating activity even when hydrogen was not limiting. This suggests that competition for hydrogen was not responsible for the observed inhibition. During the period from March 1963 to July 1965 the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program made an extensive study of the islands of the Central Pacific in the area bounded by 10°N.,180° W., 10° S. and 150° W. In the course of this study much new information was obtained on the distribution and dispersal of the Lesser Frigatebird. We have found that Lesser Frigatebirds are an abundant and widely distributed breeding bird in the Central Pacific, although only once previously reported breeding. Most of the young Lesser Frigatebirds from the Phoenix Islands travel to the Solomon Islands, Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, or the Philippines. A few travel farther north to the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, Taiwan, and Siberia, and a few also move to areas southwest and southeast of the Phoenix Islands. Most of the dispersal to these latter areas apparently occurs earlier than the dispersal to the Solomons. The dispersal pattern may be dependent in part on the surface wind pattern. 相似文献
