Raised progesterone during the menstrual cycle is associated with suppressed physiological immune responses, reducing the probability that the immune system will compromise the blastocyst's development. The Compensatory Prophylaxis Hypothesis proposes that this progesterone-linked immunosuppression triggers increased disgust responses to pathogen cues, compensating for the reduction in physiological immune responses by minimizing contact with pathogens. Although a popular and influential hypothesis, there is no direct, within-woman evidence for correlated changes in progesterone and pathogen disgust. To address this issue, we used a longitudinal design to test for correlated changes in salivary progesterone and pathogen disgust (measured using the pathogen disgust subscale of the Three Domain Disgust Scale) in a large sample of women (N?=?375). Our analyses showed no evidence that pathogen disgust tracked changes in progesterone, estradiol, testosterone, or cortisol. Thus, our results provide no support for the Compensatory Prophylaxis Hypothesis of variation in pathogen disgust.  相似文献

Rhodopseudomonas palustris is a species of purple photosynthetic bacteria that has a multigene family of puc genes that encode the alpha and beta apoproteins, which form the LH2 complexes. A genetic dissection strategy has been adopted in order to try and understand which spectroscopic form of LH2 these different genes produce. This paper presents a characterisation of one of the deletion mutants generated in this program, the pucBAd only mutant. This mutant produces an unusual spectroscopic form of LH2 that only has a single large NIR absorption band at 800 nm. Spectroscopic and pigment analyses on this complex suggest that it has basically a similar overall structure as that of the wild-type HL LH2 complex. The mutant has the unique phenotype where the mutant LH2 complex is only produced when cells are grown at LL. At HL the mutant only produces the LH1-RC core complex.  相似文献

The localization of the membrane-bound cyclic 3,5-AMP phosphodiesterasein cardiac tissues of both, rat and dog was studied by cytochemical method.40 µm thick slices from glutaraldehyde fixed heart tissue wereincubated in the medium with cAMP as a substrate and Pb ions as a capturemetal of the reaction product. The cAMP-PDE activity in the rat ventriclewas only shown positive on the sarcolemma. Whereas, in canine ventriculartissue the cAMP-PDE activity in cardiomyocytes was shown on the sarcolemma,on the junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum and on subsarcolemmal cisternae.The results confirm differences in the localization of cAMP-PDE in dog andrat heart.  相似文献

A DNA extraction protocol for submerged pine logs was developed with the following properties: (i) high molecular weight DNA, (ii) PCR amplification of chloroplast and nuclear sequences, and (iii) high sequence homology to voucher pine specimens. The DNA extraction protocol was modified from a cetyltrimehtylammonium bromide (CTAB) protocol by adding stringent electrophoretic purification, proteinase K, RNAse, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and Gene Releaser. Chloroplast rbcL (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase) could be amplified. Nuclear ribosomal sequences had >95% homology to Pinus taeda and Pinus palustris. Microsatellite polymorphism for PtTX2082 matched 2 of 14 known P. taeda alleles. Our results show DNA analysis for submerged conifer wood is feasible.  相似文献

Humans running and hopping maintain similar center-of-mass motions, despite large changes in surface stiffness and damping. The goal of this study was to determine the contributions of anticipation and reaction when human hoppers encounter surprise, expected, and random changes from a soft elastic surface (27 kN/m) to a hard surface (411 kN/m). Subjects encountered the expected hard surface on every fourth hop and the random hard surface on an average of 25% of the hops in a trial. When hoppers on a soft surface were surprised by a hard surface, the ankle and knee joints were forced into greater flexion by passive interaction with the hard surface. Within 52 ms after subjects landed on the surprise hard surface, joint flexion increased, and the legs became less stiff than on the soft surface. These mechanical changes occurred before electromyography (EMG) first changed 68-188 ms after landing. Due to the fast mechanical reaction to the surprise hard surface, center-of-mass displacement and average leg stiffness were the same as on expected and random hard surfaces. This similarity is striking because subjects anticipated the expected and random hard surfaces by landing with their knees more flexed. Subjects also anticipated the expected hard surface by increasing the level of EMG by 24-76% during the 50 ms before landing. These results show that passive mechanisms alter leg stiffness for unexpected surface changes before muscle EMG changes and may be critical for adjustments to variable terrain encountered during locomotion in the natural world.  相似文献

The reactivity of Br(-) and Cl(-) with triplet of anionic 6-chloropicolinic acid (pH = 5.4) and with triplets of 6-chloro and 6-bromopicolinic acids in zwitterionic forms (pH = 0.9) was studied by laser flash photolysis and steady-state irradiation. Br(-) was found to trap the three triplets. Triplet lifetime measurements gave quenching rate constants of 8 x 10(8) mol(-1) dm(3) s(-1) for the zwitterion of 6-chloropicolinic acid and of 3.4 x 10(5) mol(-1) dm(3) s(-1) for the anionic counterpart. No secondary transient species were observed indicating that the charge transfer intermediates are subject to dissipative processes. Cl(-) trapped triplet of zwitterions only, and reactions were found to be associated with a high quantum yield of radicals. The photolysis of 6-bromopicolinic acid photolysis was drastically enhanced by Cl(-), 6-chloropicolinic acid being produced with a chemical yield of about 90%. The 6-bromo-2-carboxypyridinyl radical could be characterized (lambda(max)/nm = 318 with shoulder at 370 nm and epsilon/mol(-1) dm(3) cm(-1) = 8100).  相似文献

The Neurospora mitochondrial and cytoplasmic leucyl-tRNA synthetases differ from each other not only in location but also with respect to tRNA specificity, chromatographic mobility, leucine affinity, and sensitivity to phosphate inhibition. Strain 45208t, which bears a mutation in the leu-5 cistron, produces a cytoplasmic enzyme with reduced affinity for leucine and little if any mitochondrial enzyme activity. Reversion of the 45208t mutation was found to result not only in the reappearance of mitochondrial leucyl-tRNA synthetase activity but also in the production of a cytoplasmic synthetase with an affinity for leucine intermediate between mutant and wild type. The reversion studied, then, did not involve a return to the wild-type nucleotide sequence in the leu-5 cistron. The results obtained lend further support to the conclusion that the leu-5 cistron is involved in specifying, at least in part, the structure of both the cytoplasmic and mitochondrial leucyl-tRNA synthetases, despite the physical and functional differences between them.Research was supported in part by National Science Foundation Grant 27575.  相似文献
